Stuff magazine: “like lipstick and shoes for men”
Billed as the world’s best-selling gadget magazine, Stuff is known for its laddish tone and accessible take on all things technological. The South African edition, launched in November 2007 by Avusa Media under the editorship of Toby Shapshak, has seen excellent circulation growth, thanks to its editorial mix of gadgets, gear, technology and scantily clad cover models.

Andy Davis’s name may forever be associated with the defunct student magazine SL. It really shouldn’t be. The not terribly rebellious and long-dead youth magazine, which he used to edit in the early part of the previous decade, has been properly usurped by the creation of Davis’s own publication – the youth-orientated Mahala magazine and website.

While electronic media grows, print falls behind
The South African Advertising Research Foundation (SAARF) has released its latest data on the local media environment for January-December 2010. No news was construed as good news for print – on average, newspapers and magazine seemed to hold steady – while electronic media continued its growth path as more people are listening to radio, watching TV or surfing the Internet.
Vision for Visi
Visi is one of a handful of truly iconic South African magazines. It has always prided itself in superior design and production values, as well as a quirkiness that resonated with many South Africans. For a while now, though, the public seems to have been less enamoured with the magazine as seen in its declining circulation in recent years.
Avusa to discontinue SoccerLife 442, remains committed to consumer market
Avusa Magazines is closing down SoccerLife 442, the soccer lifestyle title it has been publishing for the past seven years. News of the closure comes in a memo from Avusa Magazines GM Justice Malala to staff that was leaked to Bizcommunity.com. The February 2011 issue, currently in the process of going out on newsstands across the country, will be the final one.
