MINI raises the bar uh flag

A marketing campaign for a very small car grabbed hold of the imagination of millions of vehicle owners in a very big way for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. South Africans enthusiastically embraced a campaign, initially driven by MINI, to place the South African flag on the side-mirrors of their vehicles. Karen Valle, GM of MINI South Africa, talks to Bizcommunity.com about how the 6 Colours to Stand By campaign came about, and how it snowballed into one of the defining images of SA unity during this world cup.

80 buck notes – win one of 10 sets

Every so often you find a campaign which a jpeg simply doesn’t do justice. You need a hard copy in your hands to admire the detail and the printing or to get a real sense of how effective this can actually be.

One such campaign was created for Art South Africa magazine by Y&R Cape Town. Executive Creative Director Clinton Bridgeford explains the concept: "We created four different 80 buck notes (the price of Art SA magazine) each illustrated by different artists and all carried the line "Get the latest issue of Art SA and see how art is making money, or not". Whenever a customer bought a magazine or book in the store that also sells Art South Africa, the store staff slipped our notes in amongst the customers’ real change.

Blood diamonds are forever

Y&R Cape Town produced this campaign for the African Diamond Council. It highlights the ongoing human cost of the illegitimate diamond trade in Africa and is particularly relevant as the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, the organisation that certifies traded diamonds doesn’t comes from conflict zones, debates certifying diamonds coming from Zimbabwe under the dictatorship of Robert Mugabe.

Sepp Blatter flies Kulula

It was bound to happen. After running an ad in the Sunday Times inviting FIFA president Sepp Blatter free flights anywhere in South Africa a dog took up the offer. And no it wasn’t FIFA’s president. The ad in question formed part budget airline Kulula’s cheeky campaign as the ‘Unofficial National Carrier of the ‘You Know What’ that had previously landed it in hot water with FIFA’s bullying lawyers.

World Cup murals cement reputation of South African illustrators

The South African illustration house Am I Collective has scored a major creative coup when it was commissioned to create 32 posters for ESPN’s 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign under the direction of New York based ad agency Wieden+Kennedy. The 32 murals celebrate each of the 32 teams that will be competing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. ESPN owns the broadcasting rights to the event in a number of territories including the USA.
