As news broke late Friday that MetropolitanRepublic has been stripped of all its Loeries wins @marklives started retweeting industry reaction on our Twitter feed. We have reprinted some of those retweets here.

Loeries 2013: Nice show, great work
by Louise Marsland (@louise_marsland) A conversation I had with Draftfcb group CEO John Dixon at the annual Draft media lunch at The Bungalow, Cape Town, on Sunday afternoon got me thinking about The Loerie Awards and how far it’s come.
I’ve been covering the Loeries since the sequined Sun City days 14 years ago, when then M-Net presenter Michelle McLean changed her outfit more times than she got to hand out a Loerie, all through the chaotic excess of the Margate years to the return of the more-formal glamour of the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
Dixon asked what I thought of the awards Saturday night and my response was: “It was nice; the work was great, though.”
Are you a Loerie Fash-Ho? #loeries
by Louise Marsland (@louise_marsland) Since bad behaviour is banned from the actual Loerie Awards, the only thing we have left to write about outside of the actual awards, that sets the industry apart as “creative” (read: outrageous, entertaining, fascinating, fashionable, uber-cool) is the fashion.
Loeries & Pendoring: Not quite a post-mortem
by Herman Manson (@marklives) Flames roared impressively, smoke spilled over the stage and kids screamed. I had just been reading their naively thankful tweets to their educational institutions, such as the AAA School of Advertising, expressing eternal gratitude for securing them seats IN THE FRONT ROW!! of the auditorium at The Loerie Awards, and I had been wondering what fate— and the ad industry — would have in store for them… Welcome to the biz, kiddos.
The ad industry gathered in Cape Town this past weekend, starting on Friday evening, 20 September 2013, with the Pendoring Awards [winners list] and continuing through Saturday and Sunday evenings with The Loerie Awards [Loeries 2013 — all winners], to celebrate and award its creative output of the past year.
35th Annual Loerie Awards — first winners
The first evening of the 35th Annual Loerie Awards was held on Saturday, 21 Sep 2013, at the CTICC. A total of 155 awards were handed out, two of which were Grands Prix, 15 were gold and six were Craft golds.
Mthatha in surprise bid to host Loeries
Mthatha city councillor Golden Magrede has announced that the city is preparing a bid to liberate the Loerie Awards, an annual advertising award backslap, held hostage by the City of Cape Town these past several years.
“It’s time South African advertising plucks its head out of the Madam’s backside,” said Magrede, in an apparent reference to Western Cape Premier Helen Zille. “This is a thriving city, part of the beating heart of Africa, and we believe it is in the best interest of the South African advertising industry to come here and rediscover its roots in our fertile soil.”
“We also produce great weed in vast quantities,” says Magrede, “I heard Cape Town ran out of blow this year. That stuff is bad news – the trend is towards organic products – another point ad execs need to consider when they look at our bid.”
The ugly truth about advertising (as told by David Nobay)
by Herman Manson (@marklives) After all the rah rah of the last couple of weeks around the annual advertising backslap it was nice of David Nobay, Creative Chairman at Droga5 in Sydney, to sit us all down and share some of the harder truths of advertising.
He had five of them in fact.
1. Not all clients want great work.
2. There are too many of us.
3. We lost our exotic
4. We’ve forgotten how to sell
5. We reward mediocrity
Chris Moerdyk eat your heart out. As everybody grabbed for their iPhones to check in on Twitter and see which ECD would be first to denounce Nobay an ‘enemy of the creative industry’ the man himself happily droned on in the presentation that made the seminar worth its 500 bucks.
That would be the grandly named International Seminar of Creativity hosted by the Loerie Awards in Cape Town City Hall as part of Creative Week.
Nobay, noting an arrogance in the trade when it comes to ‘creativity’ and ‘advertising,’ or at least what creative types in advertising consider creative work, says clients often have practical reasons for not implementing your potentially Loerie winning idea.
This is also the problem with award shows said Nobay – they oversimplify what is considered ‘creative.’ Awarding winning work has become a matter of looking at a piece of work and having an immediate reaction to it before moving to the next piece.
“We are in this business to make money,” Nobay told his stunned audience, “Or we would all have become artists.” Great work, according to Nobay, is really a moving target, isn’t really tangible and lots of clients are running businesses in maintenance mode, while ‘award winning creative’ has become all about the new.
Hermaneutics: A tale of three award ceremonies
by Herman Manson. It’s like inviting Bucks Fizz to MC a champagne & sparkling wine event. I’m of course talking about flying in MC Hammer to MC the Loerie Awards on Sunday evening, or not, as the case might be.
