Green Sky Thinking: Sustainable luxury

by Colwyn Elder (@colwynelder) Luxury and sustainability seem like antithetical concepts, diametrically opposed, even. While the word ‘luxury’ immediately conjures up images of opulence and extravagant living, ‘sustainability’ is more often associated with compromise or living with less.

But what is luxury, really? According to Rachel K Ward, a media specialist in the fashion, art and luxury sectors, “It can be anything that is given high and exceptional regard from ordinary things.”

Given supply-and-demand is one of the basic tenets of economics, this high regard usually stems from the fact that an item is difficult to obtain, either because it’s a) expensive, or b) hard to come by, that is, rare or scarce; and the former is usually contingent on the latter.

HSBC adDwindling resources

As represented by this HSBC ad, the notion of 21st century luxury equates as much to our planet’s dwindling resources as it does to designer labels.

“21st century luxury is expected to have added value”, writes Ward, “such as re-purposed or re-claimed materials… the integrity of a luxury good is now not only its provenance or its inherent quality, but also its ability to be sustainable and continue on to the next generation.”

Positive Luxury is a global award-winning membership programme that awards brands their Blue Butterfly Trustmark for efforts towards minimising environmental impact while maximising social impact.

So how is the Blue Butterfly different to other independent accreditation programmes such as Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance?

“The Blue Butterfly is the first interactive Trustmark that looks at the brand’s overall holistic appeal… rather than looking at only one portion of how brand’s operate,” says founder and CEO, Diana van Nieto, in an interview with The Future of Luxury.

“Making better choices”

Blue Butterfly: Mark of Positive LivingEvery brand featured on Positive Luxury takes great care with the sourcing of its raw materials, the manufacturing of its products and the marketing of its services. “We believe that living a positive life shouldn’t be about compromising style, but about making better choices,” says Van Nieto. “Our ultimate aim is to create a Global movement that helps consumers to choose the brands that love them back.”

Positive Luxury has awarded the butterfly mark to over 300 high-quality brands that have sustainability as an integral part of their business. And among the Burberrys and Balenciagas is South African brand, Taunina.

Started in 2011, Taunina believes that “age-old artistries are art forms to be preserved, revitalised and repositioned in the eyes of the consumer as sought-after collectables”. A combination of the Sotho word ‘tau’, meaning ‘lion’ and ‘NINA’, an acronym for ‘No Income, No Assets’, Taunina employs artists from disadvantaged communities and affords them the opportunity to use their unique cultural heritage to create beautiful handmade, appliqued and embroidered, collectable soft toys.

Co-founder Tracey Chiappini-Young views sustainable luxury as an exciting growth opportunity for the luxury industry. As she says in this House and Leisure interview: “Whilst the combination of luxury and sustainable development may seem paradoxical at first, luxury in the noblest sense prides craftmanship, superior quality, scarcity, heritage, artistry and the ability of a product to be passed from generation to generation… all characteristics that are 100 percent consistent with sustainable development.”

Handmade, handcrafted and handwritten

And given each soft toy takes 5-7 days to make, another 21st century scarcity (or rather luxury!) falls sharply into focus — time.

Standing up against a fast-lane, quick-fix, mass-produced world, luxury becomes handmade, handcrafted and handwritten.

EXCLUSIVE GALLERY: Mockup of Total SA Thrupps forecourt store

by Simone Puterman (@SimoneAtLarge) The news broke on Wednesday, 17 September 2014, that Famous Brands and Total South Africa are to trial a new service-station forecourt store, using family-run Johannesburg-based premium grocer Thrupps as retail partner and co-branded with Mugg & Bean On The Move. MarkLives was on site at the mockup shop at Illovo Muse, Illovo, Sandton, to snap a few pics before it was dismantled.

It is important to note that this is a mockup only and the final offering, from branding and layout to products and positioning, may be very different.*

How to read the tables:

AMR% refers to the number of people in a target market who were watching an event ie programme, expressed as a percentage of the population for that demographic: “On average, 16.3% of adults aged 15+ who watched TV from 28 Jan-3 Feb 2014 watched Society on SABC 1”.

AMR is the number of people in a target market watching a specific event ie programme per minute, expressed in absolute figures: “On average, 1, 541, 066 adults aged 15+ who watched TV from from28 Jan-3 Feb 2014 watched Society on SABC 1”.

Share % (SHR %) is the share or proportion of the available audience (people watching TV at that time) that a specific channel/programme has achieved at that time: “Society achieved a share % of 52.59% from 28 Jan- 3 Feb 2014 on SABC 1″.

saarf 150SAARF is the name by which the South African Audience Research Foundation is familiarly known. SAARF’s main objective is to direct and publish media audience and product/brand research for the benefit of its stake-holders, thereby providing data for target marketing and a common currency for the buying and selling of media space and time. SAARF has thus the responsibility to measure the audiences of all traditional media such as newspapers, magazines, radio, television, cinema and out of home media.

Tech Law: The FPB’s absurd plans to regulate the internet

by Paul Jacobson (@pauljacobson) The Film and Publication Board intends regulating the internet by 2017. That includes your video clips from your family holiday or your pets doing hilarious things with doggy toys.

According to the FPB’s 2014 Strategic Plan, its goal statement when it comes to online and mobile content regulation is to:

“Establish an efficient and effective online and new media content regulatory strategy for the country.”

Quoting the plan further:

“… The need for a specialised strategic initiative was largely borne out of the realisation that online content media content is fast becoming one of the most popular media distribution platforms in the country. The FPB currently has limited capacity and procedures for the regulation of content distributed online and mobile platforms. Current procedures of the FPB focus on submission of physical material which is perused by classifiers prior to reaching a classification decision. The organisation now has to investigate innovative mechanisms that could be used in regulating this sector, without delaying the rapid pace at which it distributes contents. This means FPB regulation has to be seen to be encouraging the growth and development of this industry, whilst also providing the necessary consumer advice and protection of the most vulnerable in our society.

“The programme will entail setting up of the infrastructure necessary for effective regulation of the Internet, recognising the global accessibility of this type of content, the volumes of the content which will make it impossible to classify this content in the traditional mechanism of classification of content, proliferation of user-generated content, the convergence of technology making the similar types of content being available on the different platforms and 24 hours’ access to everyone including the minors.”

In other words, the FPB has come to the realisation that the internet is a popular content-distribution platform and it has embarked on a process of expanding its capabilities to ensure “effective regulation of the Internet”.

Film and Publication Board screengrabAmbitious goal

This ambitious goal is justified primarily by the FPB’s overarching objectives of ensuring informed consumer choice and, more prominently, defending the realm from child pornography and the exploitation of children in the production of child pornography.

Few people would rationally argue that child pornography shouldn’t be rooted out wherever possible and perhaps even that the FPB is an important body in that fight but the persistent justification of the FPB’s expanding reach into otherwise Constitutionally protected forms of expression on the basis of child pornography is reaching absurd levels.

There is so much about the Films and Publications Act and its regulations that is impractical, out-of-touch with our digital lifestyles and, at times, so outrageous that it is difficult to know where to begin critiquing it. For the purposes of this article, I’ll focus on one of the growing forms of online content: online video.

The technical stuff

The act focuses on three content types: publications, film and games. It defines “film” as follows:

“‘film’ means any sequence of visual images recorded in such a manner that by using such recording such images will be capable of being seen as a moving picture and includes any picture intended for exhibition through any medium or device”

Section 18 of the Act has a pretty broad scope when it comes to films and games:

“Any person who distributes or exhibits any film or game in the Republic shall in the prescribed manner on payment of the prescribed fee—

(a) register with the Board as a distributor or exhibitor of films or games; and

(b) submit for examination and classification any film or game that has not been classified, exempted or approved in terms of this Act or the Publications Act, 1974 (Act No. 42 of 1974).”

FAQs

The FPB’s Frequently Asked Questions on its website includes the question, “Are there films that don’t have to be classified?” with the following answer:

“All films intended for distribution or exhibition in South Africa must be approved, by means of classification, by the Board but not all films have to be classified by the same means. Films which do not contain any classifiable elements or films of an educational nature, for instance, may be exempted, upon written application, from the classification procedure and, if so exempted, would be regarded as having been approved for distribution or exhibition. “Classification” in this context means approved for distribution or exhibition, with or without conditions. The usual classification procedure is for a film to be referred for examination (viewing) by a classification committee of the Board. However, films without any classifiable elements may be exempted from the usual classification procedure by the Executive Committee of the Board.”

One of the key terms used in section 18 and elsewhere in the act is the word “distribute” which is defined as follows:

“‘distribute’, in relation to a film or a publication, without derogating from the ordinary meaning of that word, includes to sell, hire out or offer or keep for sale or hire and, for purposes of sections 24A and 24B, includes to hand or exhibit a film, game or a publication to a person under the age of 18 years, and also the failure to take reasonable steps to prevent access thereto by such a person”

Synonyms of the word “distribute” include “circulate, issue, hand out, deliver, convey, transmit”. A dictionary definition of the word (what the act’s definition alludes to as “the ordinary meaning of that word”) is the following:

“give a share or a unit of (something) to each of a number of recipients”

What this means

What emerges from this brief analysis of the act’s application to “film” is that “any person” who intends sharing or conveying (or exhibiting) a video to other people in SA has to submit the video to the FPB for review and possible classification.

If you have produced a harmless video (no sexual content or otherwise offensive material) which you would like to publish to YouTube or Facebook and share with friends, family or your group of followers who happen to be in SA, you may be required to submit that video for review. This would even include your Twitter Vine videos and animated GIFs!

If classified, the classification may be permissive but bear in mind that you will also be required to pay “the prescribed fee“ which, at the moment, includes:

  1. a registration fee as a distributor or exhibitor of a film in the amount of R1 058; and
  2. R950 for a new release of an English-language film if the film is in what the act defines as “home-entertainment format”.

Exemptions

You could apply for a classification exemption of a “film in home entertainment format” at a cost of up to R1 410 (subject to the discretion of the FPB’s executive committee). It seems you can also opt for a licensing fee of up to R750 000 for “on-line distribution” instead of a classification (this part isn’t clear but this item is under the “Exemptions” list).

The latest regulations, dated 20 March 2014, reinforce these requirements and prescribe the procedure to follow to submit films for classification, once the person has registered and paid the prescribed fees.

Although the act is focused on putting a stop to the distribution of child pornography and limiting access to adult content, its scope is so broad that it encompasses virtually any form of content that any person may want to share with anyone else in SA. That means people sharing short videos of cats in Instagram, videos of day-to-day events on YouTube or whatever else (of a non-explicit or offensive nature) people decide to capture as videos and upload to share are supposed to register with the FPB as distributors and then submit their humble video clips for classification.

Alarmingly real

Of course, there are prescribed fees which must be paid for all of this. You’d be excused for wondering if the FPB falls under the supervision of the Treasury. In the meantime, the scope for “distributors” who fail to comply to be heavily penalised or even jailed is alarmingly real.

The act’s objectives seem reasonable enough (stopping child pornography and child exploitation are important objectives) but the act seems to have been written by lawyers who don’t use the internet and are blissfully ignorant of just how people use it to share inoffensive and harmless content, not to mention the fact that the internet’s architecture was designed to circumvent censorship.

It is an impractical law and enforcing it is likely to waste taxpayers’ money as the FPB seeks to increase its capacity in an attempt to achieve the impossible goal of “effective regulation of the Internet”.

Shelf Life: Amarula’s quarter-century celebrations

Louise Marsland (@Louise_Marsland)’s weekly pick of recent product, packaging and design launches:

  • Amarula’s R25m, 25-year celebration
  • Pick n Pay supports WDC2014 with design deal
  • Barista Chardonnay 2013 launches, and
  • Melrose Arch has a designer Man Cave!

Amarula celebrates 25 years

Amarula pack shot with fruit and glassThere’s a bit of a media bonus looming next month as marula-based cream liqueur Amarula turns 25 years and spends a whopping R25 million to celebrate with an integrated national birthday campaign, in-store cash back promotions and giveaways.

From October through to December 2014, advertising will include TV, radio, print and digital, as well as retail, on-consumption and online promotions and competitions.

There’s a unique R25 consumer cashback reward at all major supermarkets and independents, too: consumers will get R25 per bottle back in cash every time they buy two bottles of Amarula Cream at one time. That’s R50 a time, and consumers will be able to claim their money back in cash from any local Absa ATM, using a digital code released on purchase. Well, that’s my Christmas-present list sorted for this year.

Independent retailers and wholesalers are also offering additional retro-style prizes to customers, including fedora hats and ottomans fitted out with speakers and an MP3 player.

Then, patrons who buy the Amarula Cream special birthday drink at any of the 400 participating bars, clubs and restaurants nationwide can also win a R25 000 cash prize. Selected clubs around the country will also be holding birthday party celebrations.

The truly South African brand was launched in 1989 and sells in over 100 countries, making the “world’s top 100 premium spirits brands” list and one of the world’s “hottest” bar brands. This year alone, it has been awarded gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and in Europe at Concours Mondial in Brussels. It also recently won gold at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) in London.

“We are very proud of our heritage as an African original and an authentic marula liqueur,” says marketing manager, Christelle Bester.

Designer goods for R100

WDC2014 Hands Design CollectiveWDC2014 Bokke & Blomme (centre) with Useful Pretty ThingsWDC2014 Litha Flora and Hula Honey

Inspired by Cape Town as World Design Capital 2014, a selection of limited-edition designer goods from the non-profit Cape Craft + Design Institute will retail for R100 each, including VAT, at Pick n Pay’s V&A Waterfront store from October 2014 through to January 2015.

The deal has been facilitated by the Cape Town Design NPC, the WDC Cape Town 2014 implementation company. All the items — ranging from packaged bath salts to décor and homeware — incorporate the yellow-and-black theme colours of #WDC2014.

“The project developed after a series of conversations with Pick n Pay and it was decided to pilot the concept in the V&A Waterfront store because of its profile,” says Nicky Swartz, Cape Town Design programme director. “While the majority of this store’s customers are locals, it also attracts many tourists. The CCDI was a natural partner when it came to choosing products.”

This is an excellent example of design as a tool for social and economic development, adds Doreen Hendricks, CCDI market support coordinator: domestic & local markets. “This is an income-generating opportunity for the producers, who are able to reach a new market.”

The CCDI was set up in 2001 to support the needs of creative businesses in the Western Cape, and to grow the region’s craft and design sector. The CCDI is an NGO and a joint initiative of the Western Cape Government and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Its mission is to support craft, design and creative enterprises, trading within local and international markets.

‘Zippy’ Chardonnay launches

Barista Chardonnay 2013The Barista brand has extended its range to include the Barista Chardonnay 2013, following upon the launch of the Barista Pinotage in2009 by Vinimark The Wine Company, in conjunction with Bertus ‘Starbucks’ Fourie.

Fourie got his Starbucks moniker from having pioneered and refined the coffee-style pinotage wines in South Africa, using a specific yeast strain, specific toasting and specific oak type to deliver the coffee flavours of pinotage wines.

Described as having a “zippy citrusy flavour” (who writes this?!) the grapes for this “lightly-wooded” Chardonnay come from Elgin. The wine has been partially fermented and matured in mostly second-fill oak barrels. One third of the wine has been fermented in stainless steel and blended in.

The packaging is minimalist, with a screw-cap design.

A further descriptor gives the tasting notes as follows: “A splash of citrus and ripe peach aromas greet you followed by hints of gooseberries and tangy tangerine with a subtle vanilla oak finish.”

(Personally, I’ve always thought people who write wine descriptions had to have had a few too many samples to deliver on such richly textured prose!)

Melrose Arch man cave for rugby ‘guys’

African Pride Melrose Arch Hotel Man CaveHoo-ha! Joburg has a MAN CAVE! Cue sweaty okes and manly things. For the manne! No broads allowed!

Okay, it’s a bit more upmarket than that, but it’s still for rugby fans, five-star or not. There’s wood-panelling and leather sofas and a personal butler for you and your ‘mates’ to watch rugby in ‘style’ at the Man Cave at African Pride Melrose Arch Hotel.

Don’t worry; it’s sound proof, too. But, really, a butler?! Somehow I just don’t see that kind of refinement at a rugby match. Also, it’s only for six people, plus the butler. But it does have an HD-wide screen with surround sound.

And, you can have all of this at R490 per match, plus biltong and nuts and a free beer each.

What’s next, a ‘Chicks Coterie’ decorated with shoes and handbags, and with free manis and pedis and massages on offer? Mmmm, that does sound quite nice…

Publicis Groupe buys MACHINE, launches Publicis Machine

by Herman Manson (@marklives) Publicis Groupe has acquired independent agency MACHINE and is merging it with Publicis Worldwide South Africa to establish Publicis Machine. Publicis Groupe is currently reinvigorating its South African and African business through a number of agency acquisitions.

Publicis MachineThe leadership team of MACHINE, lead by CEO Adrian Hewlett, will take over the reins of the new combined agency.

First approached 18 months ago

MACHINE was first approached by Publicis Groupe 18 months ago on the possibility of a deal. Hewlett says his agency had recognised the need to beef up its ATL offering in a bid to land onto more integrated account pitch lists.

Through the merger with Publicis Worldwide South Africa, this objective will be achieved. The agency also gains an established team in Johannesburg and additional Joburg-based clients such as Nestle and L’Oreal, as well as greater scale. The new agency will employ 170 people across its offices.

Hewlett says management will focus on growing the SA business and hopes to compete with established players, such as Ogilvy and FCB. Hewlett says he aims for Publicis Machine to be recognised as the agency group of the year within 12 months, while consistently achieving a top five creative ranking.

Variety of clients

MACHINE was founded in 2012 as a result of the merging of several specialist agency offerings Hewlett had created in the digital and below-the-line space. Today, it works with a variety of local and international clients, including Red Bull, Nando’s, SABMiller, Sanlam Reality, Peermont Hotels & Casinos Jaguar Land Rover and Auto & General Insurance.

Tom Fels, group managing director at MACHINE, says no major restructuring is expected and that no retrenchments are planned. Jake Bester and Gareth McPherson will be executive creative directors for the combined agency.

According to Hewlett, the merging agencies have no conflicting clients and are positive that the new positioning as a fully integrated agency will mean access to bigger accounts for the group in the near future. Several specialist units in the group, including content marketer Narrative and PR agency Moon Walk, will retain their own corporate identities and specialist focus.

Hewlett and his team will have a dual reporting line to Paris and Kevin Tromp, CEO sub-Saharan Africa at Publicis Groupe.

Recent acquisitions

Digitas LBi, part of Publicis Groupe, recently acquired South African digital agency Liquorice. Publicis Groupe has also acquired BrandsRock, which it merged with Saatchi & Saatchi to form Saatchi & Saatchi Brandsrock as well as OwenKessel (merged with Leo Burnett) plus digital agency Lighthouse Digital (which has become part of Publicis division Starcom MediaVest Group). In December 2013, Publicis bought out digital agency Synergize to sit within Saatchi & Saatchi South Africa.

Publiscis has also acquired South African below-the-line digital agency, Prima Integrated Marketing (Prima), rebranded as Prima Arc. It has also taken a stake in AG Partners, a pan-African network of 14 communications agencies across 13 countries.

Ad of the Week: A reality show with a difference #KeYona

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) The TV-watching public seems to have an insatiable appetite for “reality-based” talent shows, especially those that focus on singing and other performing arts. From “American Idol” to ‘strictly Come Dancing”, from “Dinner Date” to “Sewing Bee,” most tastes are catered for — sport, up until now, being the notable exception.

Soccer is undeniably the most popular sport in South Africa, and Nedbank has become intimately involved with the sport at various levels, including the First Division, the Premier League and amateur clubs. Since 2008 the “green bank” has sponsored the Nedbank Cup — SA’s equivalent of the FA Cup. The bank’s involvement includes building sports courts for schools and providing kit for some 100 schools.

Nedbank Ke Yona on the fieldSoccer talent search

Nedbank, in co-operation with SABC 1, this year created a campaign that brings the concept of a talent search into the field of soccer, with the Nedbank Ke Yona challenge. For the past four months or so, selectors and coaches have been building up a team of unsigned amateurs to take on the winners of the Nedbank Cup —Orlando Pirates, in case you were wondering.

The bank’s agency, Native VML, used Facebook, Twitter and online banners to invite hopefuls to register for try-outs via USSD. Player profiles and back-stories were curated and published on both web and mobile. The Ke Yona website, mobisite and Facebook page (as well as other social media) gave soccer fans and followers the opportunity to join the conversation and follow the process, from trial to tournament.

All of this resulted in online sharing and a social “buzz” being built up, leading up to the climax of the campaign, the big match, being held on 7 September 2014 at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

The fixture brought to an end months of intense preparation for the 30 000 entrants, who were handpicked after six provincial trials by selectors Shakes Mashaba, Owen da Gama, Mike Mangena and Khabo Zondo.

Campaign highlights

One of the highlights of the campaign was the series of animated clips created by Mdu, called “Coach Dingaan”. Apart from being a call to action, the cartoons were amusing anecdotes that eventually started featuring the names of all the finalists in the talent search.

The stories cocked a snook at various aspects of the game, such as broadcasting rights being sold to subscription-based channels, referee bribing and the horrors of being interviewed on television. There’s even a cheeky little nod to the FIFA 2014 video game, with an episode called “VIVA 2014”.

Nedbank also commissioned a weekly television show that was broadcast on SABC 1, detailing the progress that the Ke Yona team hopefuls had been going through, to prepare them for the big match.

Posted on YouTube

The process involved thousands of tryouts around the country to find a group of 48 to send to “Boot Camp”. From there, the contestants were whittled down to a final squad to take on the Cup Champions. The episodes were also posted on YouTube for those who missed them on broadcast — which I think is a great use of the medium that allows for more participation from viewers.

Nedbank Ke Yona TV studioJudging by the comments on YouTube, which can often be vicious and critical, “Coach Dingaan” was very well-received. The humour is very specific to Mdu’s style, which is a wonderful combination of social insight and absurdity, so it’s pointless for me to try and describe them here.

The voice performances are classic, and prove once again that we South Africans are capable of — indeed, are good at — laughing at ourselves.

“On track” reassurance

The YouTube channel created a nice bit of social interaction that kept the conversation going between the followers, and probably reassured the creators that they were “on track” with their message and their target market.

Sponsorships have traditionally been perceived as something of a “black hole” for marketers: money disappears into it but there is little way of measuring any form of ROI or brand-building. I think that with integrated campaigns such as this one, agencies like Native VML are starting to unlock the value and promise of sponsorships for their clients.

Motive: Will work that’s won internationally do well at Loeries?

by Jake Bester (@BI9PUN) The 2014 Loeries, South Africa’s most prestigious creative festival, is upon us, which means in the upcoming week a select group of local creatives will determine which work will win.

While the international award shows are normally big news, it hasn’t necessarily been a big year for SA work overseas. The Loeries, therefore, provides one last opportunity to gain much-needed creative points and possibly even motivate for bigger awards budgets next year. Never forget: the PR value from winning awards is “huge”.

Don’t

As a result of a poorer showing by SA internationally — in volume only, I must add — those who have won abroad might be feeling pretty confident coming into the Loeries, as there is less big work to compete against. My experience says: “Don’t.”

Don’t expect the judges to be wowed by international success and, therefore, don’t assume success at the Loeries is guaranteed.

I’m not saying this work doesn’t deserve to win. Just don’t expect a white wash. Local judges have a history of being tough on work that has won abroad.

Tough on ourselves

Please don’t take that the wrong way. It’s not malicious. The results are always fair, but we are a nation who constantly tries to prove ourselves as the best in the world and, as a result, are extremely tough on ourselves.

There are, however, also some practical reasons that the international work might not score at home.

First, judges abroad have a lot more creative work to get through — thousands of pieces sometimes. Here at home, fewer entries to judge mean time for greater scrutiny on each piece.

Secondly, context. Because of the complexity of multinational panels, what is easily understandable is often awarded. In other words, if a brand is well-known, it’s easy to see why an idea works. When this is not the case, great work might be misunderstood and therefore not awarded.

Is the work right or just pretty?

At the Loeries, the people judging your work are probably working on a competing product or have, at some point, even worked on that specific brand. They know the market, the brand and, as a result, the context of whether the work is right and or just pretty.

Thirdly, the SA creative industry is small. Tiny. This means everybody knows your business, what has been done here in the past, by whom, where it ran, how many times it ran and if it ran. The anonymity of a global market place is lost, so, if it’s not legit or totally original, the truth is out there.

Also, when SA is playing abroad, it’s all about SA winning. When we come home, it’s all about oour local team. Opinions aren’t held back. It’s never unfair. It’s seldom biased but, if a judge is going to say it’s good, which might mean his or her team losing, it had better be great.

Everybody loves the underdog

And, finally, a lot of great work is being done by agencies that can’t afford to enter the international shows so they invest in the Loeries. This means the big international winners might be up against work that hasn’t been seen yet —and we all know everybody loves the underdog.

So, yes, work that has won internationally might not win at the Loeries, but it also might.

Regardless, I like winning at home to be difficult and, therefore, to mean something. I also like it that a Loerie says my work is not only good, but good for the SA market for which it is intended.

Good luck to everybody who has entered — here’s to a great week celebrating great work. And to the judges, stay tough. Let’s keep a Loerie a bird that is hard to catch.

Interview: Webfluential — influencer marketing mainstreamed

by Herman Manson (@marklives) Webfluential, the web platform that connects brands with social-media influencers, has announced a deal through which Naspers’ digital media sales company, The SpaceStation (TSS), will be representing its sales portfolio to marketers. On launch last year, Webfluential said it aimed to help standardise business practices, and offer transparent and accurate data on online influencers.

Webfluential logo 2014MarkLives caught up with Webfluential CEO, Steven Murray, to find out how this deal is expected to affect its business, the management of influencer relationships and what marketers can expect to pay for influencer campaigns.

MarkLives logoWebfluential has just signed a deal for it to be represented by The SpaceStation. What does this mean for Webfluential?

Steven Murray: Webfluential’s aim has always been to bridge the divide between influential publishers and brands. This deal cements the notion that digital marketing spans not only display media, but also the advertorial and social space to generate online discussion. We are chuffed that the partnership will foster more brands venturing into the digital-conversation space.

MarkLives logoWhy did you decide to outsource sales?

SM: The platform looks to foster relationships on both sides of the fence. Going forward, TSS will manage sales and campaign management, their core competency and reason behind their recent MOST award; and Webfluential will foster influencer relationships, locally and into Africa.

Steve Murray
Steve Murray

MarkLives logoIs Webfluential generating substantial revenue yet and what is the expectation, now that you have access to a considerable digital-sales force?

SM: More than 470 marketing and PR companies have used Webfluential’s influencers to run influencer-marketing campaigns, product reviews, launches, market research and audience-marketing campaigns. Webfluential is profitable and already considering options for a US and European market entry. We feel TSS is best-placed to add this product line to their existing relationships and work with marketers.

MarkLives logoCan you update us on the number of influencers who have signed up to be part of Webfluential?

SM: 1450, reaching a global audience of 25 million people.

MarkLives logoWho is the kind of influencer that marketers are currently most engaged with through your platform, and how has this evolved since you launched?

SM: The largest number of requests come from motoring and alcohol brands for campaigns. The general bias is towards consumer brands, with the digital foundation forming a particular LSM target.

MarkLives logoWhat is the recommended average budget for a social-influencer campaign? And how do you measure ROI?

SM: Average budgets range from R30k to R150k, depending on the duration and audience reach of the campaign. We report on all social conversations [and] provide leads of who was interested in the product/service, as well as an aggregated AVE. Our development team is working with deeper insights from an analytics point of view that we’ll start sharing in the coming months.

MarkLives logoDo you have any case studies available on succesful influencer campaigns run through Webfluential?

SM: Smirnoff #explorethenight
Springbok rugby jersey launch
SuperSport “We are Brazil” [FIFA] World Cup campaign
Disney’s “Doc McStuffins” launch
Nando’s “Mass hysteria” awareness campaign
Sun International Miss SA
Citadel #Inspired event launch

MarkLives logoFinally, when you launched, you hoped to create some sort of reasonable framework to protect consumers, within which you expected influencers to work. Have you made progress here and what does that framework currently look like?

SM: That remains our aim. On the influencer side, they opt in to every campaign, and are well-briefed before committing. They indicate that content is sponsored or advertorial. On the marketer side, the guidance provided on the briefing document, and the internal process in selecting the influencers, also provides transparency to their tone of communication and guidance on some of the brands they like, or don’t.
