The Word: With social, go niche and find insiders

by Mongezi Mtati (@Mongezi) Social media has made it easier for brands to reach people; it has equally bombarded people with information that doesn’t speak directly to them. Unless it does. The active and caring brands, like the friends you can rely on, win people over and build street teams of evangelists. The ones that cluster people into groups and buzzwords like ‘hipsters’ rarely become part of the inner circle and build true connections.

Facebook is known to be the most-popular social network and the one to which most customer-outreach initiatives attempt to crack the code.

social shareTim Herrera, a digital producer at the Washington Post, braved over 1 417 posts, pictures, events and everything that makes up the Facebook News Feed.

After he tirelessly refreshed until everything on his timeline repeated itself, it turned out that Facebook was still inaccurate about what Herrera really wants to know — or cares about.

Most people will only ever see a fraction of their Facebook posts and some only appear days later, when they are no longer relevant. The experiment that Herrera ran only started revealing changes after six hours of continually scrolling through his news feed.

Can data lie?

In the age of infinite amounts of big data, is it tempting to assume that a Facebook (or any other social network) algorithm can shed light into customer behaviour and how people will react to a product. If this Facebook experiment tells us anything, it could be that the adverts which brands have paid for are being served to an audience that doesn’t care.

Part of the challenge in following data, and taking it to be a real-world reflection of how people are, is that it takes brands back into the loop of disconnecting them from people. They revert to acting like machines in social constructs.

In a 2013 brand study by Lippincott, which comprised 30 000 customers across four continents and over a thousand brands, it uncovered that people gravitate towards brands that connect at a human level.

The Lipincott, Human Era study looked at the customer perceptions of brands while rating them on a number of metrics, including:

  • Whether the brands care about their customers
  • Also taking into consideration whether brands are thought trustworthy

According to Marketing Week, “brands that behave like humans find more favour with consumers” and this goes back to the basics of building true connections with customers. The study talks to how the top brands communicate both on social media and offline.

US$50m lesson for Honda

Honda Motor’s latest campaign, where it’s partnered with some of the top networks including YouTube, Vevo, Live Nation and others, is proving to be an initiative that is putting the brand ahead of its targeted customers.

The Honda Stage programme is a youth-marketing initiative which launched in June 2014 and is expected to deliver billions of views from younger car buyers or potentials.

The statistics would us believe that a presence on YouTube, with all the right content, will soon have you go viral and smiling to the bank. However, the results have been that the Honda Stage initiative has been getting more coverage from industry contributors than the intended viewers and potential car buyers.

In a comment to the Wall Street Journal, Alison Provost, CEO of the web video analytics firm Touchstorm, said: “Among the eight videos posted to date, the percentage of viewers who actively ‘like’ the clips — a measure Touchstorm calls ‘positive passion’, is at 0.53%. That’s about the same as a banner ad.”

The Honda Stage initiative, in my opinion, is missing the sense of community that most successful campaigns have. It’s another branded-music channel on the already incredibly busy platform on which people go to looking for specific content.

Go niche and find insiders

In times of data and information overload, customers rely upon the recommendations of friends and their close-knit networks for new experiences and products. Some of the smartest brands put their resources in being part of these networks, into getting into the trusted space that friends belong in.

The US$50 million Honda Stage campaign did not listen to customers and put them ahead of itself. Instead, it’s another music initiative that competes with festivals and brands that play in the scene. Some have even argued that it does not place Honda cars in front of the audience.

Customers, as with all human beings, want a real and authentic connection with brands and that, in itself, is an opportunity to build a movement of insiders — people who are more likely to hear about a product release first, and help to spread in their circles.

Tupperware has done this effectively since the first time most mothers filled our cupboards with colourful containers.

Have you had some interesting interactions with your favourite brands, or are you working on creating some interesting brand interactions with your audience? If so, please tweet the stories to me @Mongezi.

Dissident Spin Doctor: Do we have to be bullies to succeed?

by Emma King (@EmmainSA) Last month I was approached by two junior ex-colleagues (from different agencies) who both asked me for advice as they were being bullied or intimidated by their line-managers. In both cases, the senior person was belittling them and their work in front of other people; making them do unreasonable tasks; and putting them down, often subtly, so that they felt that couldn’t speak up against it.

Emma KingNot uncommon

The problem is that I don’t think this is uncommon. In both of these cases, they were female employees being bullied by female managers. But I think this crosses the spectrum — of all sexes, all ages, and all levels within businesses.

I know of many colleagues and friends in the industry who can recount similar stories. And they weren’t all junior when it happened. These people have gone on to be heads of departments, directors in blue-chip companies, and industry leading figures, so their work or ability can’t be blamed either.

What a pity that we work in an industry where this is so rife. Perhaps the very nature of it encourages it — it’s an unforgiving industry, where one is only as good as one’s last campaign; where one has be louder, more confident and often more aggressive in order to keep afloat and to make waves.

Perhaps we think we need to put other people down in order to make ourselves look better and to be successful?

Personal experience

I speak from personal experience. When I was a couple of years into my career, as a lowly account manager, I had a line manager who was a complete nightmare, shouting and intimating everyone below her, often resulting in them hiding in the bathrooms in tears. But, in front of the senior staff and her managers, she was all saccharine sweetness and charm.

When I tell people about how traumatised I was at the time, I’m met with disbelief. Anyone will tell you that I am hardly the shy and retiring type, and so friends find it hard to believe that I couldn’t stand up for myself and tell her where to go.

But the problem with bullies is that they succeed by using their power — in a work place, the fact that they are senior — to force their subjects into silence, because we are hardwired to respect and not to challenge a senior. An ongoing assault of verbal put-downs and confrontations follow, meaning that the subjects are slowly but surely pushed to a level where they don’t believe in their own worth or ability.

So, what’s the solution that I gave to the young women who asked for my advice?

No one-size-fits-all solution

All situations are different, so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. But some things are the same, I think, wherever you are.

In ideal world, one would be able to stand up and challenge the bully, either face-to-face or via channels such as HR; sometime this works. After all, most bullies are like small dogs — all big bok when they are barking from behind their gate, but open it and they run away and hide.

But, in some cases, where bullies are incredibly aggressive, confrontation makes it worse, and one needs to face a possibility where outward aggression becomes an everyday issue that needs to be faced up to.

The truest advice, sadly, is that people generally won’t change. And so the situation itself needs to be changed, which often means leaving the environment completely and finding another job.

Incredibly liberating

It’s tough to make a decision like this, but it’s also incredibly liberating to give someone the middle finger and leave a toxic situation. And even better to find an environment that is supportive and one in which talents and ability are recognised, nurtured and celebrated.

Motive: Welcome to the “wondtacular” world of click bait

by Andrew Trench (@andrewtrench) “This Kid Just Died. What He Left Behind Is Wondtacular.”

Despite the strong odds that the sentence above is absolutely meaningless to you, there is a good chance you are familiar with it as it is the headline on one of the most-viewed items yet on the viral media site Upworthy.

Upworthy screengrabDon’t know what “Wondtacular” means? Never mind. You can be confident that the 17 million or so other people who clicked on it didn’t know either.

The story on the other end of the link, by the way, is a short article and a video about a young man who died of a rare form of leukaemia and whose story is now part of a fundraising effort to fight the disease.

Irritating phenomenon

Welcome to the world of “click bait” headlines, a phenomenon that irritates me to the point of distraction as they pollute my social-media timelines, my emails and are seeping into every kind of media.

The technique of the “click bait” headline is said to have been pioneered by social sharing site Upworthy, although some argue it has its roots back in the rise of the “yellow press” from the late 1800s.

An article in The New Yorker earlier this year examined the phenomenon and reported on the research by University of Pennsylvania academics Jonah Berger and Katherine Milkman in the early 2000s using some 7000 New York Times articles. In controlled studies, they found that articles that elicited strong emotions of either happiness or anger were more likely to be shared than any others.

Now we fast-forward to 2012 where, the story goes, a contributor to Upworthy uploaded a hitherto unnoticed audio clip of the Irish foreign-policy spokesperson ripping apart an American talk show host for opposing President Barack Obama. The contributor tried this headline: “A Tea Partier Decided To Pick A Fight With A Foreign President. It Didn’t Go So Well.” The story became Upworthy’s first million-hit article and the rest is click-bait history.

Puerile rash of the internet age

These headlines are now the puerile rash of the internet age, infecting everything from articles about cute cats to stories about the Gaza conflict. Click-bait headlines are intended to push your buttons to fuel the phenomenon Berger and Milkman discovered more than a decade ago.

Jonah Peretti, founder and CEO of Buzzfeed, another hugely successful social sharing site, explained the thinking in a presentation in which he argued that “everyone is crazy”. He explained how social publishing deliberately plays on common psychological disorders prevalent in large parts of the population.

“Being smart means a lot less on the social web than having a heart and having a sense of human behaviour and human psychology,” said Peretti.

And that’s what I find so stomach-turning about the click-bait phenomenon; it’s the grossest and most cynical manipulation of the consuming masses.

So successful

It is so successful, in fact, that many of these social sharing sites are building substantial revenue streams applying these techniques for advertisers and other “partners”. Even the respected Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is using the click-bait approach through Upworthy to popularise its admirable health-care causes.

But I find it worrying that complex issues of our day cannot be “sold” in the marketplace of ideas without candy-floss headlines that assume that we are too thick to pay attention otherwise.

And make no mistake, sites like Buzzfeed or Upworthy and their swelling ranks of imitators are not delivering ideas of any substance on the other end of their click bait. They’re delivering what Upworthy calls “attention minutes”, the sad currency of our media age.

It’s a currency which has Peretti exhorting us to “publish into the zeitgeist” — a concept I think is generally sound and which has driven media for the past couple of centuries. But something has gone rotten when an image of a toppled yogurt container becomes the media nugget of a minor earth tremor in New York City and gains tens of thousands of views and shares.

A toppled yogurt container!

Equivalent headlines

I look at the front page of The Witness as I write this and wonder what our click-bait equivalent headlines might be on some of the stories we carried in yesterday’s edition. Would “Top cyclist stabbed for bike” have to become “Vaughn Cronje went out for an early morning ride. You’ll never imagine what happened next!” for us to compete for “attention minutes”?

I hope not while I breathe air.

Creation: A quick guide to pissing off creatives

by Artwell Nwaila (@artwelln) In April 2013, Harvard Business Review published an article by Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, titled “Seven Rules for Managing Creative People”. You may have come across the article because it sparked huge controversy as it used words such as “arrogant,” “bipolar” and “psychopathic” to describe creatives.

Harvard Business Review screengrab[HBR updated the headline on the post in question 10 April 2013 to “reflect that its intent is to discuss a small subset of people who happen to be both creative and difficult to work with; not to imply that all creative people are difficult”. The new headline reads “Seven Rules for Managing Creative-But-Difficult People”. — ed]

The silliest solutions

The article suggests the silliest solutions for dealing with creatives which include paying creative poorly because it drives productivity. And, if that is not ridiculous enough, the good doctor suggests that creatives should be surrounded by boring people, otherwise they will compete for ideas.

The article in summary looks like this:

  1. Spoil them and let them fail
  2. Surround them by semi-boring people
  3. Only involve them in meaningful work
  4. Don’t pressure them
  5. Pay them poorly [since changed to “Don’t overpay them”]
  6. Surprise them
  7. Make them feel important

Seven MORE ways

I could go on for days about this crazy article but instead have chosen to provide seven more ways to piss off creatives.

  1. Brief creatives verbally

Miscommunication is a big problem in any industry. It gets even trickier when it comes to translating instructions into creativity. It sounds like common sense but it’s a real issue.

Quick tips that won’t get your tyres slashed:

  • Don’t brief verbally
  • Don’t brief on a post-it and
  • Don’t brief on the phone
  1. The “Please make the logo bigger” syndrome

Dear managers, design is not about the logo being bigger. Logo size does not relate to sales. Let the professionals finish the job and then discuss branding options that work at the end.

I can hear designers rising up to do the slow clap.

  1. Personal favors

If you are not going to pay extra, don’t ask creatives to do your personal duties.

Photographers and designer will agree with this point — no, we will not design your kid’s eight birthday invite, even if it will only take 10 minutes!

  1. Backseat creatives

There is nothing more annoying than a manager, or any senior person who is not specialised in creativity, hovering over your shoulder. This limits creative thinking and I’m sure it’s illegal somewhere on the planet.

  1. Death by deadlines

Ridiculously short deadlines equal terribly bad creative work, which in turn equals exhausted, unhappy staff. Expectations should be managed responsibly on all sides.

  1. Morbidly long meetings

It’s simple: creatives are allergic to long pointless gatherings unless there’s booze or entertainment

  1. Quote of death: “It shouldn’t take long”

If you want your creative department to go postal, keep on saying “it won’t take long”. Unless you have some kind of creative qualification, you will never know how long a job takes.

Other terms that will find you being a victim of a drive-by shooting are: “Make it pop”, “Be creative”, “Work your magic” and “Make it look like…”

Add the above to Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic’s list and you have the perfect recipe to annoy creative successfully.

Collaborative agency We are BOB wants to change adland

by Herman Manson (@marklives) A group of specialist agencies has come together under a single roof to establish a collaborative agency called We are BOB. Members, lead by group MD, Sizakele Marutlulle, and founder and chief commercial officer, Reghard Goussard, give up 15% of their revenue to the collective. So far, the collaborative agency has a staff count of 72.

We are BOB logoAt the moment, We are BOB consists of specialists in the field of web and mobile (Omni Studio), insights driven creative (Crio), events and activations (Colourworks), PR and social media (Positive Dialogue), production procurement (Tonic Print), commercial specialist (Comsound Marketing), retail specialist (Origin) and strategy (Mercury 1).

Services

Services include through-the-line campaigns, digital, production procurement, strategy, events and PR.

The agency launched in March 2014 and isn’t willing to list its client base as yet — many of these are working with the agency on a project basis while they test the business model.

Goussard used to run his own agency, called Arctic Circle, which he closed down earlier this year. Goussard says he grew tired of the agency model Arctic Circle was built upon, one which has lost the trust of marketers and faces increased pressure due to budget cuts and a constant pitch environment.

Collective minds

Collective minds will build future agencies, rather than individuals, says Goussard. We are BOB is testing a new model, where small owner-managed agencies pitch together on larger accounts. Clients can pick and choose what they need from the collaborative and members give up a share of their revenue, rather than see the agency charge clients extra.

All the member agencies are now under a single roof — easing pressure on clients who now have one point of contact and a unified budget, and allowing member agencies to fully collaborate on client projects.

Sizakele Marutlulle and her partners gives the collective a BEE component that is hands-on, explains Goussard, which is essential to real industry transformation and in rebuilding trust between agencies and clients.

We are BOB: group MD, Sizakele Marutlulle, and founder and chief commercial officer, Reghard Goussard. A long career

Marutlulle has enjoyed a long career in advertising and marketing; she was chief operating officer of South Africa Tourism, deputy managing director of  HerdBuoys McCann-Erickson, and CEO at Grey.

According to Marutlulle, BOB attempts to bring together best-of-breed specialists in a way that is economical for clients. The agency is challenging the status quo, she says, who is a firm believer in co-creation.

“It is our ambition to deliver brand objectives with social glue,” she says, adding that brands need to look beyond the limited scope offered by vieving people only as consumers and ignoring all the other elements that make us human.

Willing to prove itself

Marutlulle also acknowledges that the colloborative model still has the potential to scare clients, but says the agency is willing to prove itself by working on projects with clients, rather than attempting to grab all their business on the first go.

Marutlulle notes that, when she asks people about their favourite ad campaigns, these are inevitably older than 10 years. Today, we see the same work continously repackaged, when we should be trying to create the best work for the current decade.

“You can be brave or you can be safe,” challenges Marutlulle, “but you can’t be both.”

She hopes brave clients will link up with brave partners to produce just that.

MagLove: The art of typography

by MediaSlut (@MediaSlut) My choice of the best international magazine covers in MagLove this week:

  • The New York Times Magazine
  • Thursday Magazine
  • TIME (Digital)
  • Esquire

INTERNATIONAL

The New York Times Magazine, 31 August 201

The New York Times Magazine, 31 August 2014I don’t even want to say too much about this cover, as I think the visual imagery, linked to the cover story, says it all!

Definitely one of my favourite covers of the year so far, purely for its brilliance in covering the story!

And the background story will make you appreciate this cover even more…

Thursday Magazine

Thursday magazineThursday Magazine does it again by thinking out of the box when designing its covers and cover stories!

Just so clever and witty!

TIME (Digital)

TIME (Digital): Never OfflineThis digital TIME cover captures the world we’re busy moving into — perfectly.

This cover is in connection with the new Apple Watch that was announced earlier this week, and how “wearable tech will change your life”.

Scary but as they say, “Like it or not.”

Esquire, October 2014

Esquire, October 2014: It's not all wet towels and naked women Esquire, October 2014: Try. Fail. Who cares? Esquire, October 2014: A fool at 40 is a fool forever

Esquire has three split covers with its October 2014 issue, with all three of them having very strong typographical elements with not an image in sight.

Just typography. Just awesome!
