Ad of the Week: Takealot of this DIY Christmas Special with Suzelle

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Suzelle DIY is a “Bitesized Do-It-Yourself Webseries” conceived by filmmaker and animator Ari Kruger and illustrator/designer Julia Anastasopoulos. In December 2014, online retailer Takealot.com used the holiday season and four episodes to promote the brand, as well as its wish list feature— and I think it’s a very clever association.

#AdoftheYear: Best South African Ad of 2014 — #getmeto21

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) I’m a big fan of digital, social media and viral campaigns that work well. That’s why I’ve decided to award this year’s #AdoftheYear to a campaign that has already made a tremendous impact upon people’s lives, and promises to do more as it continues gathering momentum.

#AdoftheYear: Top 10 Best South African Ads of 2014 [ads 5-2]

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Emotion — that’s the one thing in common with the ads at the top of the pile for 2014’s #AdoftheYear. All of these entertain, but are remarkable because they connect to human feelings. So let’s continue with the countdown.

#AdoftheYear: Top 10 Best South African Ads of 2014 [ads 10–6]

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) The Christmas decorations are out in the malls, the newspapers are full of brochures and seasonal specials, and the promise of a well-earned break is just around the corner. With two weeks to go until Marklives.com closes shop for the holidays, it’s time to do a countdown of the #Top10 Best South African Ads for 2014.

Ad of the Week: Eyes in the back of your head

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) These are technological innovations that boost our driving with added elements of safety and convenience. A while ago I featured an ad for Merc’s system that detected driver drowsiness — now it’s VW’s turn, with the brand’s ‘Side Assist’.

Ad of the Week: The psychic insurance sell

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Traditionally, insurance companies have tended to deal with matters such as death and accidents with a certain amount of gravitas. After all, death is no laughing matter. Or is it? In the latest TV spot from Hollard, by M&C Saatchi & Abel, the mould has been broken, with a commercial called “Caravan”.

Ad of the Week: In the Great Karoo, a flag visible from space

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Since 2010, FCB South Africa has been promoting the idea to ‘Keep Flying’ the flag. The latest news from this initiative is an effort to ‘ground’ the campaign in a legacy project: the Giant Flag in the Great Karoo, with socio-economic and ecological benefits.

Ad of the Week: Encouraging entrepreneurial youth to “be more”

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) The spirit of the iconic Apple campaign, “Think Different”, is echoed somewhat in Halo Advertising’s campaign for the Commercial Bank of Africa, with the simple tagline of, “Be more.”

Ad of the Week: Not playing ‘litely’ in the beer market

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Take a beer bottle. It doesn’t have a face or limbs. To animate it and give it character requires something special in the hands of skilled artists; and this is what Amstel and Owen Kessel Leo Burnett have done with the launch campaign for Amstel Lite: ‘Make Your Play’.

Ad of the Week: Mzansi standing together

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) The art of photography is sometimes forgotten in this Instagram-age of automated filters and point-and-click cameras. So it’s refreshing to see projects such as ‘I See a Different You’, and it’s heartening that these young artists are being taken seriously by a brand such as Grant’s Whisky, which has stepped up to sponsor a dedicated project.
