Ad of the Week: The smoking gun

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) For those who were there, Loeries was a feast of South Africa’s top creative talent. Y&R was one of the agencies that proudly announced a bumper crop of awards this year. One in particular — not a Gold winner, but a Silver in print/newspaper advertising — is courting controversy, and I’ve chosen it for my Ad of the Week.

Ad of the Week: It’s not inside…

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) … It’s onnnn … top! There probably isn’t a South Africa alive who hasn’t heard that slogan — one of South Africa’s best-loved and familiar campaigns. The new Cremora ad sits very comfortably in the target market of the coffee-creamer brand.

Ad of the Week: A reality show with a difference #KeYona

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) The TV-watching public seems to have an insatiable appetite for “reality-based” talent shows, especially those that focus on singing and other performing arts. The notable exception, up until now, has been sport. Native VML’s Ke Yona challenge for Nedbank, in co-operation with SABC 1, has changed that.

Ad of the Week: #MadeofMore #MadeofBlack

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Once again, we’re featuring Guinness on Ad of the Week. Previously, we chose the beautiful, unique “Sapeurs” as its appeal was so universal and classy that it couldn’t be ignored; this time, the latest offering targets the younger segment, themed on a Kanye West song — #MadeofBlack.

Ad of the Week: Call me chicken but it’s a tie

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Two of South Africa’s favourite fast-food chicken outlets, Chicken Licken and Nando’s, have seen new television commercials flying forth from their creative coops. And — happy day — both use humour to market the respective (but competing) brands.

Ad of the Week: Down, boy!

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Retailers seldom step outside the box when it comes to advertising. Whether it’s toilet rolls or bread rolls or chicken rolls on ‘special’ in these formulaic ads, unless one’s looking for a bargain, it’s a signal to turn one’s internal attention ‘button’ to mute.

Ad of the Week: Living an entire month using nothing but R1 coins

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Last month was ‘National Savings Month’ – and while it may have passed the attention of some of us who are just too busy earning a living to notice such things Sanlam took full advantage of the occasion by plugging this into its ongoing ‘Wealthsmiths’ campaign.

Ad of the Week: Don’t skip this

The ad is very simple. It’s a close-up shot of a seatbelt buckle, as it is being fastened. The copy that follows is: ‘A few seconds you just can’t skip.’ This is followed briefly by the Ford logo; the five seconds is up, and the YouTube ‘Skip’ button appears.

Ad of the Week: More than a jersey

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Call them what you will, South Africa’s oldest soccer club, the Orlando Pirates, is part and parcel of SA life and culture. The 140 BBDO TV commercial featured this week is ostensibly to promote the Pirates’ jersey but it does much more than just that.

Ad of the Week: It’s hip, Jim. But not as we know it

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) What happens when you look around you and almost everyone’s a hipster, except you? As with all cultural phenomena, hipsterism has hit full stride and is now the source of many a meme, and has broken into the commercial mainstream. So no surprise *drumroll* that hipsterism is the focus of this week’s wickedly clever advertising campaign from FoxP2 for Garagista.
