by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Obviously, it’s in a cellphone company’s best interests to maximise airtime spent; so, when Cell-C recently noted an increasing trend for people to drop calls instead of leaving messages, it wanted to sell the idea that leaving and listening to voicemail is something special. Hence the charming new TVC,”Don’t hang up — it’s more than a message”, by 1886 FCB Johannesburg.

Ad of the Week: Flights of imagination
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) This week, prepare to have a good belly laugh, thanks to the new campaign created for Student Flights by the specialist travel company’s advertising partners, TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg.
Ad of the Week: Ever heard of a laptop billboard?
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Even though I work in the industry, sometimes we overlook great campaigns. But fortunately awards shows can bring these lost gems back into sharp focus for me. This campaign, by FoxP2 for Ster-Kinekor, which ran late last year, won second place in the recent Creative Circle’s Ad of the Year in the Out of Home category, giving me another chance to look at it for Ad of the Week.
Ad of the Week: Sanlam’s super-duper boy
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) It has been a trend lately for ads to look back at ‘the old days’ with a strong sense of nostalgia. This week we go ‘retro’ again, with an ad from King James Group that harks back to the ’60s: Sanlam’s ode to youth and the patience that’s required to build wealth in the long term.
Ad of the Week: The mother-trucking big burger
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Fast food is an incredibly competitive segment of the market, and the competition hots up even more when it comes to the chicken wars. Chicken Licken delivers a power punch with its new television commercial from Net#work BBDO, “Big John”, which is a whole barrel full of chuckles.
Ad of the Week: You have a right to know
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Right2Know is an organisation that was formed in 2010 to oppose the Secrecy Bill, and it has continued to do so in the form of parliamentary lobbying, street demonstrations and various campaigns. The latest took the form of an email campaign by Ireland/Davenport.
Ad of the Week: Changing the world, one school at a time
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Education remains a challenge in South Africa and is a space where old apartheid spending still continues to directly impact learner’s outcomes. Ad agency Joe Public, led by Pepe Marais, is part of an organisation that has taken on this challenge — One School at a Time.
Ad of the Week: Trust me, I’m a doctor
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) The last time I was affected deeply by a Coronation ad was in 2012, with the true story of Lawrence Anthony, “the elephant whisperer”. The new ad, from Net#work BBDO, sticks with the powerful message of “Trust is Earned”, as well as with using a remarkable but true narrative to demonstrate the power of trust — the story of Dr Albert-André Nast, a doctor in the French village of Chelles.
Ad of the Week: #RainyDay savings
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) It’s great to see banks showing people how to save instead of how to spend. This week, we look at how Nedbank, together with Joe Public, recently came up with an arresting way of getting people to think about saving through its “Make saving for a #RainyDay happen” billboard.
Ad of the Week: Rescue me
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Most ad agencies adopt causes, but I’d like to single out Ogilvy Cape Town for its support of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the stellar print campaign that not only publicises what the NSRI does but makes a very clear call to action.
