#AdoftheYear: South Africa’s 10 Best Ads of 2013 (Part 2)

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) [2nd 5 of 10] And the winner is… Here is the second half of my entirely subjective countdown of the best of the Best Ads of 2013. It was a good year, so everyone’s a winner (as they say).

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. 1918 — 2013.

“Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, why I will sleep for the eternity.” – Mandela, 1994 (The Authorised Book of Quotations)

#AdoftheYear: South Africa’s 10 Best Ads of 2013 (Part 1)

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) It’s been a good year for advertising and brands, and it’s been hard to single out the single ad that I would nominate as “Ad of the Year”. In fact, using the very scientific method of reviewing all my Ads of the Week, I’ve decided on a “Top 10” countdown of the best of the Best Ads of 2013. Here are the first five, with no apologies, and no prizes.

Ad of the Week: Airbrushed into nothingness

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) The Mail & Guardian weekly newspaper is well known for its oppositional stance in South African politics, and once again has made its position clear with its latest print campaign, “Freedom is Knowing”, prepared by TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg.

Ad of the Week: Where’s my name? #ShareACokeZA

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Since the beginning of November 2013, South Africans have been able to buy cans and bottles that have the wording “Coca-Cola” replaced with 600 of the country’s most common names. Produced by Draftfcb with Velocity Films, the television commercial (TVC) that goes with this #ShareACokeZA campaign is called “Share a Coke with Bobby”, featuring a gorgeous black-and-white border-collie-cross-pit-bull.

Fair Exchange: Unilever, P&G and the rise of the corporate brand

by Erna George. Over the past few months, I have noticed that corporate brands are increasingly being featured in campaigns marketing the product or ‘consumed’ brand. Whether a surreptitious inclusion or blaring endorsement, this phenomenon is an interesting addition to the branding landscape.

ABC Analysis Q3 2013: Content marketing — the 1m club declines

by Herman Manson (@marklives) The latest ABC circulation results show that content marketing (custom magazines) titles lost some ground compared to the same reporting period a year ago – circulation fell to 12,395,274 from 13,427,811. Some 2,195,572 of these were paid for copies. In terms of circulation the DSTV magazines continues to dominate – they are the only magazines with a circulation of over a million.
