by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Many Twitter users streaming #SONA2015 on the day would have spotted the Photoshopped images of President Jacob Zuma, leader of the opposition Helen Zille, the EFF ‘Commander in Chief’ Julius Malema and a mysterious fourth person in various different scenes, enjoying a ‘good time’ together.

Ad of the Week: As a fan, how far would you go?
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) It goes without saying that Castle Lager is an iconic South African brand, and it has taken a lot of time, effort and money to achieve this status. Naturally, the “Superfans” campaign capitalises on the feel-good factor associated with sport. And this latest commercial is a goodie — it’s an epic journey, a hell of a tale, a real mini-movie with a spectacular ending.
Ad of the Week: That awkward moment
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Normally “So, what do you do?” is a way for someone to ‘size you up’ — and if you’re currently unemployed, or in an embarrassing job, it can lead to an awkward moment. In the latest Careers24 campaign from Ogilvy Cape Town, this awkwardness is capitalised upon, leading to some great ‘cringe’ comedy.
Ad of the Week: Exploring the night
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) We love campaigns that use new media (sometimes along with ‘old’ media) in innovative and interesting ways. Smirnoff has raised the bar with a multi-channel campaign that promotes one of its more club-oriented products — Smirnoff Ice Double Black with Guarana.
Ad of the Week: A notebook that tugs at the heartstrings
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Time wasted at work could be time spent with your loved ones. Time lost in the hurly-burly of life is less time for creating a better quality of life. And the latest ad from Dialdirect insurance and Joe Public brings that simple message home, in a mini-movie that tugs at the heartstrings.
Ad of the Week: Getting Dad’s approval for a car
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) I’m generally wary of car ads that use dangerous stunts and high-speed driving, as if the ‘thrill of the drive’ is the most important consideration when buying a car. That said, I think Nissan Almera’s “Dad’s Approval” from TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris turns the model on its head.
Ad of the Week: Takealot of this DIY Christmas Special with Suzelle
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Suzelle DIY is a “Bitesized Do-It-Yourself Webseries” conceived by filmmaker and animator Ari Kruger and illustrator/designer Julia Anastasopoulos. In December 2014, online retailer Takealot.com used the holiday season and four episodes to promote the brand, as well as its wish list feature— and I think it’s a very clever association.
