The waning influence of ad award shows

The statues are stacked in neat rows along office walls. It’s come to define our industry. Kids are told they need to win ’em to impress the creative director and secure that job. Creative directors are told they needs to win ’em to impress the MD and prove their relevance in a competitive industry. MD care because they are told the talent cares, and with a bit of spin and a celebratory lunch, the client might be induced to care, too.

That’s a lot of caring taking place right there, so why am I seeing more and more stories along the lines of ‘Death to Design Awards’, published on the influential design blog Design Observer, or “What’s wrong with advertising award shows?”, published on Adsoftheworld?

Fall in entries for Digital Loeries points to adoption issues

Wading through the near endless amount of PR on the digital transformation and seamless integration of digital into the advertising world, it must be a little disconcerting for Clint Bryce, chairman of both the Digital and Online Advertising judging panels of the 2010 Loerie awards, to see entries in these categories decline this year in spite of steady growth in online ad spend.

The future of mobile app development lies in simplicity

With the move of computing power away from the desktop to cellphones and other mobile devices, computing is becoming increasingly intimate and integrated into daily life. In his latest book, “Mobile Mania”, Simon Silvester (EVP Head of Planning at Young and Rubicam and Executive Planning Director, Wunderman Europe Middle East and Africa), argues that computings’ new intimacy, driving as it does aspects of our social, shopping, travel and personal communication, offers amazing opportunities for mobile app developers and entrepreneurs.

Cannes report back: Collaboration key to creativity

Cannes report back: Collaboration key to creativity
By Anton Crone, Executive Creative Director, Saatchi & Saatchi Cape Town

Cannes. La Croisette. Locked onto the scent of red carpet we are heading for La Palais du Festival; the Med to our left, the Majestic hotel to our right and leashed chihuahua’s everywhere in between. Like a snail underfoot, except crunchy on the inside, you have to keep your eyes peeled for these guide dogs of the gliteratti, but if they are not trotting along the pavement with their madame in tow, they are taking a well deserved Louise Vuitton bag break, nesting among mascara sticks and bejeweled cell phones.
