Seven key design takeaways from #DesignIndaba #dayone

Here are seven key design takeaways from Wednesday, 23 February 2011, the first day of this year’s Design Indaba conference currently being held at the Cape Town International Conference Centre in Cape Town.

Pete Case – finding heart in digital

Pete Case needs little introduction to the larger creative or digital community. His name is intricately linked to that of the multi-award winning digital agency Gloo, AdReview’s Digital Design Agency of the Year for the past four years running, where he serves as founding partner and Executive Creative Director.

Derrick wants to save the world

Big thinking lies behind new Cape Town agency Derrick, which hopes to combine business sustainability with environmental friendliness, a collaborative approach to communication and media neutrality. It has been launched by Livio Tronchin (ex-Jupiter Drawing Room Cape Town), Mark Stead (former CD at KingJames RSVP) and Myles Hoppé (former brand manager at the company designing SA’s first electric car, the Joule).

Ogilvy & Mather expands investment in local office

Ogilvy & Mather has upped its stake in local subsidiary Ogilvy South Africa from 49.9% to 59%. According to Moss Mashishi, chairman of Ogilvy Africa and Ogilvy SA, the deal signifies the maturing relationship between the global and the local office, which he says has always been a flagship in the larger Ogilvy & Mather network.

Media24 Magazines restructures: end of line for well-known publisher brands

Media24 Magazines is set to restructure into five new business units, John Relihan, CEO of Media24 Magazines, has confirmed to Bizcommunity.com. This follows publication of an internal memo outlining details of the process leaked to the blog MediaSlutZA. Media24 Magazines is the largest magazine publisher in the country.

Wayne Naidoo elected as ACA chair

Wayne Naidoo (CEO of Lowe Bull) has been appointed the new chairperson of the Association for Communication and Advertising of South Africa (ACA) in place of Reinher Behrens. Two vice chairs were re-elected, namely Mike Gendel and Boniswa Pezisa, while Nina Morris took the third spot vacated by the election of Naidoo. Naidoo will chair his first official ACA meeting in the new year.

Mercury retrenches third of staff following GCIS move

Media placement house Mercury has had to retrench 10 staff members following a decision by the Government Communication and Information Service (GCIS) to centralise control of Government’s R1.7 billion annual advertising budget (including departmental). The GCIS was a long-standing client of Mercury, which has had considerable success in attracting business from government departments and parastatals over the years.
