by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) This week I want to focus on the innovative use of a screen we’re all familiar with — but that has largely been ignored by advertisers. Yup, I’m talking about automatic teller machine (ATM) screens.

Ad of the Week: KFC crosses cultural barriers
by Oresti Patricios. There’s nothing that makes South Africans more patriotic than being away from home. That’s the archetype that Kentucky Fried Chicken, the brand now known as KFC, has leaned heavily upon to promote its ‘finger licking’ fast food in its new South African TVC, “Tastes Like Home”, from Ogilvy & Mather Johannesburg.
Ad of the Week: Toyota’s Prado battles border control
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Getting a brief to create a commercial campaign for a Land Cruiser must be any agency’s dream. This week, we look at the television advert for the new-look Toyota Prado Land Cruiser, which was revealed to South Africans by the media late last year but only launched here this year.
Ad of the Week: I see a different Brand Soweto
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Three Soweto residents named Vuyo Mpanthsa, Justice Mukheli and his twin brother Innocent, decided to do something about the unfair image Soweto has accrued with a project they call, “I See a Different You”. This isn’t, strictly speaking, an advertising campaign, but it has so much to teach marketers that it is worth looking at.
Ad of the Week: Give those ad makers a Bell’s!
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Yes, the Bell’s Whisky TVC “The Reader” is a sentimental advert, but it is so astutely crafted by King James and Greg Gray of Velocity Films that it comes across as completely authentic and heart-warming. And, considering the problem of adult illiteracy in the country, the Bell’s commercial proffers an inspiring message.
Ad of the Week: Bewitching MWEB radio ad brews up trouble
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Everything your average person knows about witches (or warlocks) comes from plays such as Macbeth, or from fables and stereotypes that are perpetuated by society. Which is why it was fun to stumble across the new MWEB radio ad by M&C Saatchi Abel, in which traditional Xhosa occultists are the protagonists of the commercial.
Ad of the Week: Pop-up Street Store for the homeless shows real heart
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Don’t you love it when intelligent people apply smart thinking to innovate solutions to social problems? If you’re like me, you’ll love what the team of clever clogs at M&C Saatchi Abel have come up with to try and help Cape Town’s needy — a pop-up Street Store for the homeless!
Ad of the Week: Be the man you want to see (Sapeurs)
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Too often, one finds that creative directors try to manufacture emotion in the ads they produce. Then again, when something does come along that strikes a nerve, and cuts through the dross, it really makes me take notice. The Guinness Sapeurs spot by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO — celebrating a Congolese social phenomenon called “Sapeur” — is a case in point.
Ad of the Week: Richelieu’s rollicking round up
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Just when you thought you’d seen all the “Best of 2013” lists and articles, here comes Richelieu with a loony parody of Katy Perry’s “Roar” that takes more than a few pot shots at the events of the past year.
Ad of the Week: It’s a love virus
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) In a year that’s poised for political friction, it warmed my heart to discover Advantage Y&R’s endearing “MTC Hugs” advert for Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC), a cellular access company based in Namibia.
