Cannes report back: Collaboration key to creativity

Cannes report back: Collaboration key to creativity
By Anton Crone, Executive Creative Director, Saatchi & Saatchi Cape Town

Cannes. La Croisette. Locked onto the scent of red carpet we are heading for La Palais du Festival; the Med to our left, the Majestic hotel to our right and leashed chihuahua’s everywhere in between. Like a snail underfoot, except crunchy on the inside, you have to keep your eyes peeled for these guide dogs of the gliteratti, but if they are not trotting along the pavement with their madame in tow, they are taking a well deserved Louise Vuitton bag break, nesting among mascara sticks and bejeweled cell phones.

Sepp Blatter flies Kulula

It was bound to happen. After running an ad in the Sunday Times inviting FIFA president Sepp Blatter free flights anywhere in South Africa a dog took up the offer. And no it wasn’t FIFA’s president. The ad in question formed part budget airline Kulula’s cheeky campaign as the ‘Unofficial National Carrier of the ‘You Know What’ that had previously landed it in hot water with FIFA’s bullying lawyers.

AfrikaBurn, Coconut-Prawn Curry & frozen Tequila

Andrew Whitehouse, Executive Creative Director at FoxP2, attended the AfrikaBurn (a South African take on the famous Burning Man) event held in the Karoo in April. He took some pictures and jotted down some words exclusively for MarkLives.

‘Bring me my machine gun’ and other favourites down under

MarkLives recently featured a couple of ads by ad agency FoxP2 that originally ran in 2008 to promote the use of dairy yet still remains eerily relevant (they ‘feature’ both Malema and Mugabe). Here are three more ads, from the same agency but this time for Frisco, that could as well have been made today. One features the prez singing Julius’s favourite song, another feature that word favoured by the ruling party to tar any opposition with and the third celebrates the national treasure we have in Eskom.

Wimpy, ASA tells vegetarians they shouldn’t be taken seriously

The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa recently ruled that “There was no evidence, before the Directorate, that the use of the word vegetarian is regulated or should be used in a certain way.” Uhm, ok. This is our advertising watch dog refusing to admit that use of the word ‘vegetarian’ requires to regulation in advertising.

Loeries 2010: Call for entries campaign launched

Loeries 2010: The biggest event of the year. The campaign theme for this years’ annual Loeries event, announced today, Monday, 15 March 2010, by CEO Andrew Human, is of course a tongue-in-cheek, if rather dry, reference to that ‘other’ biggest event of the year. Before those FIFA lawyers get their knickers in a knot again – Kulula-style – no part of the campaign actually ever mentions the FIFA World Cup or shows a football. It’s called having a sense of humour. Read my story and see all the creative on BizCommunity.
