Ad of the Week: The power of sudden impact [graphic]

by Oresti Patricios. Y&R Cape Town and Egg Films’s short for Safely Home strikes home hard. Really hard.

Ad of the Week: Dance, dance, dance

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) King James II got the talented Terence Neal of Egg Films to direct an eye-catching TV ad for 5FM’s Live Loud campaign. All about the power of music — and what happens if it isn’t there — this commercial speaks to the heart. I’m telling you, this ad could have been made for me, and me alone.

Ad of the Week: As a fan, how far would you go?

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) It goes without saying that Castle Lager is an iconic South African brand, and it has taken a lot of time, effort and money to achieve this status. Naturally, the “Superfans” campaign capitalises on the feel-good factor associated with sport. And this latest commercial is a goodie — it’s an epic journey, a hell of a tale, a real mini-movie with a spectacular ending.

Ad of the Week: That awkward moment

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Normally “So, what do you do?” is a way for someone to ‘size you up’ — and if you’re currently unemployed, or in an embarrassing job, it can lead to an awkward moment. In the latest Careers24 campaign from Ogilvy Cape Town, this awkwardness is capitalised upon, leading to some great ‘cringe’ comedy.

Ad of the Week: Exploring the night

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) We love campaigns that use new media (sometimes along with ‘old’ media) in innovative and interesting ways. Smirnoff has raised the bar with a multi-channel campaign that promotes one of its more club-oriented products — Smirnoff Ice Double Black with Guarana.

Shelf Life: Transforming Jozi CBD through creating meaningful change

Louise Marsland (@Louise_Marsland)’s weekly pick of recent product, packaging and design launches: Native makes an Absolut statement; get the skinny on McCain’s new fries; and Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky expands marketing strategy.

Ad of the Week: Imagine if banking were fun

by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Banking is hardly something I get excited about, let alone consider ‘fun’. The latest campaign from Standard Bank starts out feeling a little like those ‘Maths is Fun’ or ‘Reading is Fun’ books we used to get at primary school. Except it actually works.
