Kaka gets styled the Africa way

adidas, the official FIFA partner of more than 35 years, is currently running the Kopanya creative campaign for the Confederations Cup 2009. The name derives from the Sesotho word meaning join together, which marries well with the adidas philosophy of Together We Are Strong…

‘The Barbershop’ format that was chosen suited the campaign objectives and deliverables best says ad agency TBWA Hunt Lascaris.  “To achieve true prominence in Africa is to have a haircut named after you, and as a style it is pragmatic and pliable, these barbershop signs are after all advertising their services. The naming and descriptions of the haircuts also helps in the ability to describe the player, as in the Kaka, the Pienaar and then give a brief description of their style, which then marries to the boot, all ultimately resulting in pushing the product – the end goal of all successful advertising campaigns.”

The print ads and billboards appear hand-drawn and are representations of well known local and international sports stars such as Kaka and Pienaar, as well as Lionel Messi and Creus Xavi from FC Barcelona.  The elements involved in the campaign will be billboards, print ads and buses featuring Kopanya decals.

Kwerekwere the new Kaffir*

Mark is showcasing the work of a number of South African based freelance graphic designers and illustrators over the coming weeks. This Anti Xenophobia activist poster campaign by Sindiso Nyoni are  based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights articles, and address the xenophobic attacks of May/ June 2008 in South Africa.  By Sindiso Nyoni, a Zimbabwean designer/ illustrator. Sindiso describes his work as uniquely African street style with an international, cosmopolitan feel.

* The headline comes from one of the posters. Mark knows the word Kaffir to be of the worst sort. We were not going to publish it until the team realised we had no such qualms with the word Kwerekwere. It is time South Africans realise the one is interchangeable with the other. Both are disrespectful, both dehumanise. Its time we see these words used in the same sentence, for it to be underlined, they serve the same purpose. They are both evil.

There is nothing more annoying than having your head used as a napkin by your elders

There is nothing more annoying than having your head used as a napkin by your elders. Ogilvy Johannesburg tapped into the idiosyncrasy of this local tradition to devise a quirky ad to promote KFC’s Streetwise 2 meal. The hand-on-head wiping is a ritual meant to bode well for lots of cows and therefore wealth for the young boy on the receiving end. The boy in the ad decides he’s had enough of the head-wiping business and comes up with the idea of buying KFC’s Streetwise 2 special for himself and his uncle. Instead of wiping his hands on the boy’s head, the uncle instead licks his fingers, because KFC is just so “finger-licking good.”

MyNews24 shows how media can use Twitter

MyNews24 has jumped from the 5th spot on Mark’s Twitter News Ranking Index to 1st. In a month. The road to success seems to be very much in line with a recent column MarkLives published on how news organisations can effectively use Twitter.

They have a human being posting breaking news updates, replying to reader queries and following followers. In fact they seem to actively search out new readers. The site even jumped the much older @News24 Twitter account which itself has seen somewhat fewer updates than usual. That by the way is a move in the right direction. Few care to follow the dozens of news headlines that gets posted in bulk by some news organisations.

SABC News and Moneyweb joins our news listing (both launched on Twitter in the past few days), as does Muti, a news aggregator. We are expanding the Index to follow non-print news resources as well. Would be interesting to see how radio stacks up against online or print brands (@702 seems to be doing pretty well)!

Further abroad it has been announced that Sky News has appointed a Twitter correspondent – Ruth Barnett – to scour Twitter for breaking news stories.
