Mark found this BBC News brand campaign by Ogilvy Johannesburg online. The tag line reads: Ask the right question. The images speak for themselves. What do you think the questions were for Graeme Smith, Robert Mugabe and Silvio Berlusconi?
Personalised shopping bags – while you wait!
House and Leisure will announce the winner of the House and Leisure Green Designers at Woolworths competition at Design Indaba on 26 February. Mark is showcasing the finalists all week long.
Clayton-Emil Coutriers, Tshwane University of Technology (scatter cushions)
My design was inspired by nature. Our environment is very important to me. In general I’m inspired by colour. My design is sustainable as it serves to remind the consumer of the fragility of nature. The material I chose was pure cotton twill for its strength, elegant sheen and natural look. I consider myself a green designer because I’m conscious of the earth and its needs.
Kirsten Skidmore, The Red & Yellow School (shoppers)
I made my shopper out of Woolworths’ plastic bags and then added hessian straps. I looked at ways of re-using plastic and found that a little heat can easily transform it … Then I experimented with my iron! I wanted the consumer to play an active role in recycling the bags. When it’s in production, my idea is to have a place where you could take your old bags, which would be transformed while you watch into a personalised shopper. My design is unique because the method used in making the bag results in a different product every time.
If you drink like a fish*
Creative work done by Luvi Ogilvy, based in St Denis on Reunion Island, will be featured throughout the week on Marklives!com.

This striking appeal by the CGSS and ANPAA (French social/health security and Association of Prevention of Alcoholism and Addiction) addressed to youngsters was created by Luvi Ogilvy. The creative team used the communication codes frequently used by the alcohol industry: a catchy and involving visual of the product, only this time, there is literally a hook at the end.
The campaign catch-phrase is “It’s your choice to keep off the hook”

Scatter cushions for the eco friendly
House and Leisure will announce the winner of the House and Leisure Green Designers at Woolworths competition at Design Indaba on 26 February. Mark is showcasing the finalists all week long.
Letitia du Toit, Tshwane University of Technology (scatter cushions)
The idea for my designs came from the beauty and cyclical element of nature. I wanted to bring a touch of earthiness into South African homes … to remind us all of the importance of water. I used symbols in my design to communicate a message, such as to use water drawn from windpumps.
Mariette Naude, Tshwane University of Technology (scatter cushions)
The material I chose for my design was 100 per cent cotton; I love its natural, clean look. If I could change one thing to make the world a greener place it would be stopping the production of plastic shopping bags. I consider myself a green designer because I use natural fibres.

A ticket to Reunion
Creative work done by Luvi Ogilvy, based in St Denis on Reunion Island, will be featured throughout the week on Marklives!com.
With strong competition from the giant Canal+ local TV station Parabole had to come up with a clear message to gain audience share. Parabole is recognized as the television station that shows local life and also as the window that brings the world closer to Reunion. Few people can really afford to actually travel out of Reunion hence the association with the plane ticket.

Gifting stationary that turns into a stuffed toy!
House and Leisure will announce the winner of the House and Leisure Green Designers at Woolworths competition at Design Indaba on 26 February. Mark is showcasing the finalists all week long.
Chrisanne Terblanche, Cape Peninsula University of Technology (gifting stationery)
My design is unique as with a little effort it can be turned into a stuffed toy. On the inside people will find a printed pattern, instructions and accessories to make a toy animal. I am a green designer because I always keep ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ in mind while working. This design is sustainable as nothing goes to waste – the offcuts are used for the stuffing.

Paula Simoni, Design Time School of Interior Design (rugs)
I wanted to find an exciting and innovative material for my design. I used polyester offcuts that were originally made from recycled plastic bottles. So the carpet is in the third stage of recycling. While it’s made from recycled material, it still has the appearance of a soft shaggy rug. My design is sustainable because it’s tough and will last. No machinery is needed in its production, which reduces the amount of energy used.

On Reunion a Bourbon is a Dodo
Creative work done by Luvi Ogilvy, based in St Denis on Reunion Island, will be featured throughout the week on Marklives!com.

“Reunion Island is great” and so is its beer! No human figure is allowed in beer advertising though. The Dodo presented an opportunity to humanise the brand and show the companionship expected from the national beer brand, BOURBON, known locally by everybody as DODO. Luvi Ogilvy created one of the biggest outdoor campaigns ever on Reunion Island. By the way, if you ever go to Reunion and ask for a beer, make sure you ask a Dodo. Asking for a Bourbon will look weiiiird.

Recommended for Golf-aholics

There is no recovery from this compulsive habit. To improve general health the only treatment known to ease the pain is a few shots a day, a lot of iron and keeping away from any vegetables other than greens. The best place to get this kind of care? The Colorado Golf Club.

Is that a traffic cone in your kitchen?
House and Leisure will announce the winner of the House and Leisure Green Designers at Woolworths competition at Design Indaba on 26 February. Mark is showcasing the finalists all week long.

Theo Olivier, University of Johannesburg (kitchen canisters)
The idea behind my containers was to use pine, a readily available material, and make a classy product from it. I believe that ecofriendly design should no longer be a trend but a prerequisite. I like the idea of using green materials to create tasteful, quality products. My containers are made of SA pine approved by the Forest Stewardship Council, and the lids are made from injection-moulded biodegradable cornflour.

Blake Charles Semple, University of Johannesburg (kitchen canisters)
The ideas we inspired from spending time walking the streets – traffic cones are a common sight. My original idea was to morph the cone, but I was advised that a literal direction might be worth exploring. The containers stack on top of each other and rest on a base that serves as a tray for the whole unit. They are bright coloured and fun.
