As riots and revolution rocks the Arab world, the rulers of Abu Dhabi are building yet another offshore island villa complex for the super-rich. Designer Dror Benshetrit, speaking on the first day of the annual Design Indaba conference, currently underway at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in Cape Town, admits he spent several minutes laughing loudly over the phone during the call in which he was told he’d won the design contract (admittedly approved before the current wage of rage swept the region) that he’d designed in only five weeks.

Improvisation can land you in trouble, as participants in the recent “No Pants Gautrain Ride”, organised via social media to co-inside with the global “No Pants Subway Ride”, found out the hard way. News reports suggest that the management of the Gautrain prescribes a dress code these days (participants were fined R700 each for wearing the “wrong clothing”) and doesn’t take kindly to people who believe a bit of public theatre every now and again can contribute to our social space

Bafana Bafana belongs to the people
The South African Football Association (SAFA) is investigating a name change for Bafana Bafana. While a lot of talk and opinion is being bandied about regarding the colloquial context of the name, SAFA is on record as to why it is planning to throw out the name three Sowetan sports writers coined in the early 1990s and adopted by the nation. It’s about money, plain and simple.
The trio tasked with bulging SAFA’s pockets even further investigating a name change to the benefit of the team and the country consists of SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani, vice-president Danny Jordaan and chairman of the referees committee Alpha Mchunu.
A question of trust
A new survey on levels of trust between the public and governments, business, NGOs and the media has just been released. The Edelman 2011 Trust Barometer tries to gauge the attitudes regarding the state of public trust in these institutions across 23 countries. Although the survey does not extend to Africa, it does draw some interesting conclusions on how, why and when people trust.
