by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) This week, prepare to have a good belly laugh, thanks to the new campaign created for Student Flights by the specialist travel company’s advertising partners, TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg.

Motive: Feed a Child and the cost of getting cultural language wrong
by DK Badenhorst. There is no way to tell the story of starving children in a lovely way. There is just no nice way of saying ‘millions of children eat less than a domestic dog’. But a cultural understanding of your market will make you aware of any minefield you’re heading into. And don’t assume that, because you are from the place, you’ll know.
SAARF/MarkLives #Top40TVratings: #WorldCup ratings drop-off continues
by SAARF & MarkLives (@marklives) The World Cup ratings drop-off continues this week on our national TV ratings chart for the week of June 30–July 6. The first week of the 2014 FIFA World Cup nabbed five of the Top 10 slots on SAARF/MarkLives #Top40TVratings national chart but this declined to only one Top 10 spot the following week, for the game between Brazil and Chile, and only five of the top 20 slots. This time, we have one Top 10 spot (Argentina vs Switzerland) and four games have made it into our Top 20.
Motive: ‘East Rand Monster’ and the citizen journalism fail

Ad of the Week: Ever heard of a laptop billboard?
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Even though I work in the industry, sometimes we overlook great campaigns. But fortunately awards shows can bring these lost gems back into sharp focus for me. The complex continent
by Jon Pienaar SA companies wanting to expand into the rest of the continent – beware: you can’t simply transplant your existing, highly successful marketing strategy/campaign to a new territory in Africa. Some SA and global brands have learned the hard way that marketing in each new African territory demands a local approach. It should be obvious.
SAARF/MarkLives #Top40TVratings: Bored with the World Cup already?
by SAARF & MarkLives (@marklives) Last week, the 2014 FIFA World Cup nabbed five of the Top 10 slots on SAARF/MarkLives #Top40TVratings national chart but our data this week (23-29 June 2014) shows it only managed to grab one Top 10 spot, for the game between Brazil and Chile, and it took only five of the top 20 slots. On the DStv chart, no FIFA games made the Top 10.
Ad of the Week: Yebo!
by Oresti Patricios (@orestaki) Last week’s Ad of the Week was a nostalgic trip to a time before television. This week, it’s a self-referential trip for Vodacom, which has reprised a favourite campaign from yesteryear. Who doesn’t remember the ‘Yebo Gogo’ duo?
Indy Ad Exec: A message from Seth Godin
by Tom Fels (@thomasfels) You’re on a journey, not the fast track, to a destination and, no matter where you find yourself, chances are you’ll do just fine — relatively, of course. This is what I learnt recently from meeting Seth Godin.
