Media-regulation glee club has a new hit show

n the wake of the massive phone-hacking scandal playing out in Britain, its prime minister, David Cameron, has called for the scrapping of media self-regulation and for stronger press regulation by government.

Rupert Murdoch’s News of the World, one of the largest circulation English newspapers in the world, was found to have hacked the phones of celebrities, politicians, sport stars, even a murdered school girl, victims of the London subway bombings – the list goes on.

#zamediafreedom ANC vilifies journos in attempt to quash free speech

The ANC has made public its plans for the future of South African media in a discussion paper prepared for the ANC National General Council 2010, to be held 20 – 24 September in Durban. The discussion paper makes it quite clear how the ANC views the media – it unashamedly vilifies journalists as dishonest scoundrels – and rather disconcertingly notes the success of the apartheid regime in staying in power through censorship and media control.

‘Bring me my machine gun’ and other favourites down under

MarkLives recently featured a couple of ads by ad agency FoxP2 that originally ran in 2008 to promote the use of dairy yet still remains eerily relevant (they ‘feature’ both Malema and Mugabe). Here are three more ads, from the same agency but this time for Frisco, that could as well have been made today. The media, with some help from the DA, decided that to produce a kid Jacob Zuma had to have had unprotected sex. Hate to break this to you but sometimes condoms break. It happens. Unless Helen Zille, Leader of the Democratic Alliance, happens to be a webcam buddy with either of the two people involved I suspect it is unlikely she should know what really went down. So to speak.

COPE says vote for hope

Political party Cope has signed up over 5000m2 of large scale nationwide branding which aims to heighten the party’s profile and spur voters to the polls. The numerous large scale outdoor sites can be seen throughout Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban. Network BBDO conceptualised the creative work. Nice to see something other that those boring election posters on lamp posts…

Together with advertising agency Ogilvy Johannesburg, the ANC has produced four commercials (view the first one here) that talk to the positive changes ordinary South Africans have experienced since 1994, while acknowledging “there is much more to be done”. Once again Nelson Mandela is prominently mentioned at the beginning of the ad followed by a message from Zuma at the end.
