Namaqualand flowers for the Lexus Hydrid

BUF, the internationally acclaimed animation firm in Paris (France) that has provided special effects for many global brands and feature films including Batman – The Dark Knight, joined forces with local agency Draftfcb Johannesburg and production house Velocity to create an inspiring television commercial for the new generation Lexus RX.

The new ad focused primarily on the Lexus RX450h. The objective was to showcase its design features while demonstrating its hybrid technology. To achieve this, Draftfcb Johannesburg’s creative team of executive creative director, Grant Jacobsen, creative director (art direction) Leon Moodley, and creative director (copywriting) Erin Brooks linked one of South Africa’s most spectacular displays of natural beauty – the Namaqualand flowers – with the Lexus RX450h, thereby highlighting its elegant design and its environmentally friendly hybrid qualities.

It took six weeks for the campaign to be completed and it will flight between August and October this year. The background score was composed and produced by Audio Militia’s Paul Norwood and Craig Hawkins.

The Spier Contemporary 2010

The Spier Contemporary 2010 has revealed a new brand identity centered on the multi-layered statement; “Open for Art”.

Creative Director Kevin Flood says that the core challenge was to encapsulate a complex conceptual competition in an open, transparent and non prescriptive way. “It needed to speak to all levels of South African society from the high art intellect to the general public. We chose a single cohesive idea, which would be instantly recognisable and communicate the Spier Contemporary as a brand. In turn, it needed to be flexible enough to live across different forms of media, from traditional print, to ambient and electronic”.

The collaborative creative team is made up of graphic designer Kevin Flood (of Creative Flood), copywriter Theo Erasmus (of Membrane), web designer James Mentz (of Tenacity Works) and the Spier Contemporary project team.

Call for entries: The Spier Contemporary invites the submission of any new creative work in any medium. This includes animation, graphic design, illustration and product design. For more information, please visit www.spiercontemporary.co.za.

Zero Degrees Jeans hopes to make an impression

Rather than merely telling customers just how slim-fitting the new range of SlimFit Zeroo Degrees Jeans is, Euro RSCG South Africa devised an instore campaign to prove it to them. The ads demonstrate that SlimFit Zeroo Degrees Jeans are so tight, the contents of your pocket will leave an imprint on your skin.

‘The i20 is a part of your life’

This ad for the Hyundai i20 was created by agency The Jupiter Drawing Room. “We wanted to position the i20 as a car packed with fun and excitement, all wrapped in a stylish and powerful package. Our launch TVC illustrates this by showing the i20 having fun with a group of friends – literally,” says spokesperson Nadia Riepenhausen. The take-out is ‘The i20 is a part of your life’.

The entire commercial was shot in-camera meaning that no special effects were used. They used a stunt driver to make the car do a 360 spin on the same slippy slide that the actors were using.

Internet Solutions: from ‘what if’ to ‘when’

The new IS when ‘what if’ becomes ‘when’ brand campaign includes print and outdoor advertising, a redesigned corporate identity (CI), digital and social media elements, PR and event management. The above-the-line print and outdoor elements aim to capture the essence of the IS brand, with a surreal depiction of technology set against the backdrop of peoples’ everyday lives, encapsulated through everyday headlines. Full service creative agency Hello World created a central campaign idea that encapsulates the company vision while remaining true to IS’ people centric approach to business.

The ad entitled ‘Conversations’ includes an image of paper planes flying past a restaurant window. This is very similar in concept to the current MWeb TVC, but conceptualisation of this ad took place last year and production was done in March, so it is pure co-incidence that both ads used similar concepts, says Pedro van Gaalen of Hello World Agency.
