  • International/print: Bloomberg Businessweek uses irony and satire to sell North Korea as the ultimate frontier market
  • International/print: Mundial celebrates the 2018 FIFA World Cup with its largest issue ever, a combination of soccer mania and nostalgia over 21 covers

Heart-Love-Polygon-Geometric-Flat-Design-Icon-Illustration by lekkyjustdoit courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos   Chimurenga Chronic (South Africa/Zimbabwe), April 2018

Chimurenga Chronic Broadsheet and Supplement, April 2018The latest issue of Chimurenga’s The Chronic alludes towards recent events in Zimbabwe — the perceived coup d’état that lead to the ousting of former president. Robert Mugabe, and the history that his name drags along with it — all the while attempting to move past ‘white anxiety’ and the ‘Africa-South’ problem. It has become custom for The Chronic to be published in two parts, a large-format broadsheet and a smaller, supplementary magazine. Both publications feed off the music and literature responsible for documenting and revolting against oppression and conflict in Africa. For this edition, the cover to the broadsheet showcases an engaging conceptual piece provided by South African-based Zimbabwean-born artist, Kudzanai Chiurai, that stands as a testament to this post-postcolonial drive, and all the complexities that it carries with it, via an appropriation of a seemingly official governmental contract.

The accompanying supplement, titled XIBAARU TEERE YI (“Chronic Books” in Wolof, a widespread language in Senegal) is an investigation into the lessons that African writers can learn from the work of Senegalese historian, anthropologist, physicist, and politician, Cheikh Anta Diop, famous for his examination of the origins of humankind in context of African culture before the influence of colonialism. The cover of this supplement is a parody, a tribute to TAXAW (“standing” in Wolof), which was Diop’s retitled publication, succeeding the radical magazine, SIGGI (“raising one’s head and picking oneself up” in Wolof).

¯\_(ツ)_/¯   Bloomberg Businessweek (US), 18 June 2018

Bloomberg Businessweek 18 June 2018 and After-party at Nklanda by Brett MurrayAt a recent conference, US president Donald Trump stated the following about North Korea: “You see that whenever they’re exploding their cannons into the ocean. I said, ‘Boy, look at that view. Wouldn’t that make a great condo?’” North Korea is an attractive frontier market for many, especially since Trump’s historic summit with Kim Jong Un on 12 June 2018, where he plugged the country’s beaches. Since 2006, North Korea has been out of bounds to international business, when the UN launched economic sanctions to stunt the growth of the nation’s nuclear armament.

With an air of quasi-imperial politically conservative kitsch, the latest cover of Bloomberg Businessweek (reminiscent of touristy postcards, wedding invites, travel guides, and handout flyers), sells the investment potential of North Korea wholesale, extra-large, and super-sized. Printed bold, and stroked, “Your North Korean Investment Guide”, supported by a quote from Trump, “think of it from a real-estate perspective”, this cover certainly milks the Word art aesthetic. When used in the correct context. there is a place for ‘bad design’ of this kind, particularly within the context of irony, satire, and parody, and when fighting fire with fire is required. Brett Murray’s satirical use of the Cooper typeface in After Party at Nkandla stands as a testament to this. The usual typographic suspects are guiltier than others in this regard — Cooper, Courier, Helvetica, Arial, Comic Sans, Chalkduster, and the like — but there’s no substitute for well-placed humor within trying circumstances.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯   Mundial (UK), issue #14, June 2018

Mundial issue 14 2018 - 21 coversIn celebration of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and its fourth birthday, Mundial magazine’s 14th issue has been themed The World Cup special. No layered story or theme here, just 21 different covers, with important exponents of the game each with their own cover, selected by the magazine’s staff, all remembering meaningful moments within the history of the sport. A combination of soccer mania and nostalgia, there’s a cover for most fan favorites, including Ronaldo, Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane, and Paul Gascoigne, to name a few. Aside from having several covers, this issue happens to be Mundial’s largest issue since its launch in 2014, with 148 pages in total.

Heart-Love-Polygon-Geometric-Flat-Design-Icon-Illustration by lekkyjustdoit courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos   Cup of Couple (Spain), June 2018

Cup of Couple, online, June 2018Founded in 2011 by Mike Madrid and Gabriel García, both photography and art direction mavens, Cup of Couple seems to have many parts, notably being an online magazine/design studio/ brand consultancy. Described by GQ magazine as inventing a new online visual language, in 2016 the site was bestowed Best Men’s Fashion Blog from the US-based Bloglovin’ Awards. Aside from aesthetic awareness and design instinct, fashion and lifestyle trends are Cup of Couple’s key focus, which has become a segue for the creative duo to travel the world and work with many design-savvy likeminded brands such as Prada and Autograph Hotels. The site displays a keen awareness of typography, layout, and photography, showcasing the finest in street style globally.

Iconic

Heart-Love-Polygon-Geometric-Flat-Design-Icon-Illustration by lekkyjustdoit courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos   The Enemy (UK), 1927–1929

The Enemy, issue 1, Jan 1927 and issue 2, Sep 1927Recently, the advertising sage, Sir John Hegarty, alluded to creativity receding in the marketing world in favor of data. This is a simple issue, where marketers have basic observation skills to interpret data but don’t have the complex comprehension and critical thinking skills to creatively use data in a process that can allow for the crafting of meaningful stories. Critical thinking and creativity are vital in this respect, and, once again, it’s a concern that we’re consuming culture faster than we can produce it. This is the opposite of design. It is, as Massimo Vignelli suggested, vulgarity, in poor taste, kitsch at best — not to mention destructive.

A few years after printing Blast, an iconic vorticist publication with anti-futurist sentiments, the notorious author and editor, Wyndham Lewis, renewed his editorial, design, and publishing interests with The Enemy, a tabloid-style magazine focused on cultural dissent. As the publication’s name suggests, Lewis’ peers and antagonists, many of them allies and close friends such as James Joyce and Ezra Pound, had become his perceived ‘enemies’. In a rebellious editorial act, Lewis took Sun Tzu’s oft-quoted pronouncement, “Know thy self, know thy enemy”, to the next level.

In 1926, to publish The Enemy, Lewis founded The Arthur Press, with the intention to create a platform for independent cultural critique concentrated on society-at-large. The point was to combat a moratorium on free thought with unapologetic critical thinking. With an introductory essay written by Lewis, titled “The Revolutionary Simpleton”, The Enemy lambasted the work of Pound, Joyce, even Charlie Chaplin and many other culturally significant exponents of the time. The message that this publication broadcast was that creativity should have an anarchic element that can result in an explosive force, which drives culture.

Lewis printed three issues of The Enemy between 1927 and 1929. The first volume, edited and illustrated by Lewis himself, slated Pound for being “a revolutionary simpleton”, and tore into Joyce and Gertrude Stein for their “time-obsessed” overtly idealistic inclinations. The point, following dadaist Tristan Tsara, was there are far too many idealists out there, and society is too sensitive due to its ignorance towards more-abstract, -creative perspectives about the world. The second volume debatably had the most interesting, and most publicised, cover with its experimentation in illustration and typography that could be seen as trendy, even by contemporary standards.

With his defiant writings, Lewis’ critical approach in The Enemy arguably evolved into one of his most significant text, Time and Western Man. The third volume suggested that there were intentions for a fourth issue but this never became a reality.

#CannesLions: Day 3 highlights, notable wins

by César Vacchiano (@cvacchiano‏) CANNES, FRANCE: Naomi Campbell was a game-changer in fashion and she spoke on Cannes Lions Day 3 about the innovation and designers in Africa — how impressive it is to be in Africa and feel the explosion of innovation throughout the continent. She is building a platform so that young designers may show their work. She first travelled to Africa in 1984 and since then she’s been attracted by its energy.

Fashion as a cultural influence

She realised that she worked with designers, not because of the money but because of their talent and innovation in design, and she helped to promote some designers through working with them (ie Azzedine Alaia). She’s also been working with many NGOs and she’s learned to identify those that she feels 100% safe working for, those that really work for good. She’s been involved in projects with Syrian refugees and she was touched because she realised that their only hope is to return some day to Syria. Meanwhile, they’re happy, even if they have five jobs a day in order to learn new skills and make a living.

She wants emerging markets to be allowed into the world to show their innovative talent. She thinks that building platforms to show that talent is crucial. She says that, if she dreams it, it will happen. She shared with us that the most-important thing is to have passion and be committed to projects, and that this is the formula for success.

Reimagining the retail experience

McKinsey predicts that, while 30% of sales will be online, 70% will still be generated in retail stores, so it’s important to invest in retail and reinforce the experience and engagement of customers in stores.

Apple is building a different type of store, much larger and with spaces to hold training sessions and have closer relationships with clients. The spaces will be built to resemble the boardroom at Apple Park built by Foster. Angela Ahrendts, Apple Retail senior VP, explained this is an educational project within Apple and it’s finding emblematic spaces and buildings in cities to build spaces that are being named “Today at Apple”. Apple holds 16 000 sessions a day, in 501 stores in 30 countries.

GAFA (Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple)

Scott Galloway, NYU founder and professor of marketing, shocked the festival with some dramatic figures on GAFA. He demonstrated with accurate data how these US tech giants are destroying jobs, stopping innovation and becoming big monopolies in today’s world without paying taxes. Governments and laws do nothing to stop them.

While Walmart pays US$64bn in taxes in the US last year, Amazon only paid US$1bn! Google had a revenue of £5.7bn in the UK in 2017 and only paid £0.05bn taxes. Facebook and Google projected a US$28bn growth and they only need 26 000 employees in their organizations to accomplish that growth. At the same time, Publicis Groupe, Omnicom, IPG and WPP have projected a reduction of 235 000 employees, so there’ll be a nett loss is of 207 000 advertising jobs in the futures.

He made us all realise that, among the global political leaders, Merkel (Germany) will be in power for at least three more years, Trump for four years, Putin for six years… but Mark Zuckerberg will be leading Facebook for at least the next 33 years.

Galloway has written the book, The Four. The hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google, where all this data is revealed and he also has interesting talks on TED.

Deviant design

The next biggest innovation is not a technology.

Beau Lotto is a neuroscientist whose studies in human perception have taken him well beyond the scientific domain and into the fields of education, the arts and business. He explained that everything we do is a reflex. His advice: Don’t shift; expand.

The next greatest innovation is how to be in conflict. The best ideas do not make sense. And he thinks playing is crucial; it celebrates uncertainty, encourages diversity, makes you open to different possibilities, and makes us cooperative, intrinsically motivated and intentional (beaulotto.com).

Bites, snacks & meals

Last year, YouTube introduced us to bumpers (bumper ads); yesterday, Noel Paasch, global creative director, explained how a group of bumpers — a flock — work even better, as well as the importance of tuning into your audience if you want them to tune into you. Plus the basics of successfully creating videos: tight framing, bright and high contrast colours, and large-type copy.

YouTube worked with 12 agencies to retell the greatest stories (Rapunzel, Three little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood,). They may be seen at yt.be/retold

Recognition

Spotify, the Swedish company, has given new opportunities to singers, introduced us all to new artists, has gotten listeners to pay for music again, has over 170m music fans in 65 countries, and is a powerful canvas for brands. Daniel Ek, Spotify CEO, received the award of Media Brand of the Year on behalf of its 3 000 employees.

#CannesLions: Day 2 highlights, notable wins

by César Vacchiano (@cvacchiano‏) CANNES, FRANCE: On Cannes Lions Day 2, an emotive roundtable discussion took place with HRH Sarah Zeid (Princess of Jordan), Sir John Hegarty (BBH founder), and Corinne Woods, (UN World Food Programme CMO) to encourage the creative community to use its skills and move the people to understand that there are 130m people dying of hunger in the world.

The UN WFP took food to 91m people last year and Zeid explained what’s happening currently in a country like Burundi, from where she flew to speak at Cannes. All three spoke about the importance of using cinema, the “mother of all screens”, to transmit powerful, emotional messages which will make citizens of the world sit up and take notice. The UN knows how to speak to governments but doesn’t know how to speak to the average citizen and certainly not to millennials. This is where the creative community can help. Hegarty created a touching film to promote the downloading of the app, ShareTheMeal.

Cannes Lions is donating all money received from nearly 400 entries for campaigns for Sustainable Development Goals to charities.

Diversity moves the business needle

Antonio Lucio, HP Global CMO, led yesterday’s panel on Diversity.

Thandie Newton, well-known British actress and Star Wars superstar, spoke about how difficult it was to grow up in Cornwall, an English county, being the daughter of a Zimbabwean woman and an Englishman. She was able to make positive change within the community and raised awareness that a dual-heritage, mixed-race girl isn’t a danger. She changed people’s minds through creativity in dancing. She used her craft to break the walls of ignorance, through being curious and through trying to be included among the other children, showing that differences shouldn’t be seen as threatening.

Edward Enninful, Vogue UK editor, knew that he wasn’t handsome but rather interesting looking, and he wanted to be a model; then he changed his mind and wanted to be an editor. He wants to push diversity of perspective and nurture the new generations.

Tiffany Warren, Omnicom chief diversity officer, wants representation in teams because those teams have an impact on business.

Goodbye Malaria

ACT (Advertising Community Together; act-responsible.org), included in its reel the campaign of Adios Malaria. The malaria pathogen was used in four different stages to create traditional capulana patterns and fabric, with the aim of reducing malaria in Mozambique, the country with most deaths from this mosquito-borne infectious disease in the world. A campaign from TBWA\Hunt Lascaris was screened.

People connecting with brands and how creativity has the power to create an emotional reaction within people Malcolm Poyton, Cheil global ECD, made the audience laugh talking about anatidaephobia, the fear that you are being watched by a duck, to introduce how technology will be the saviour of creativity.

Cheil and Samsung in India have combined the old technology of Morse code with the new technology of smart phones, so that deaf and blind people around the world may communicate and feel what they can’t see or hear. They now have a two-way communication tool. He also presented how they have developed software in Spain to identify dyslexia at early stages.

In South Korea, 1.3m seniors/aged live alone. Cheil created “LifeSavingTV” so that, if the TV isn’t switched or turned off after 24 hours, a social worker may identify that there’s a problem with that person who is living alone.

It only takes two words to do what you want, and those are technology and creativity.

Let’s talk about sex

Sid Lee shared that, even if technology makes starting a relationship easier than in the past, millennials are having less sex than the previous generation and that today there are 6% more virgins than there were in the ’90s.

Marcel, one year later

In one of the most-anticipated seminars this week, Arthur Sadoun, Publicis Groupe GCEO, explained that Publicis Groupe missed all of us at Cannes. It has been a huge sacrifice not to enter awards and it wasn’t for PR reasons as has been reported. The group needed to transform itself and it didn’t have the money, so Publicis needed to make this sacrifice of not entering awards for one year!

Marcel is a connectivity network of 80 000 talented people. It is about four powers: opportunity, connectivity, knowledge and productivity. It is a gamechanger. Nick Law, Publicis Groupe GCCO, explained the two features of Marcel: first, to identify the experts in specific territories, disciplines, clients, brands… and, secondly, the opening of briefs to 80 000 people so that they can work together directly on the app.

To encourage the bonding, every person will receive six cards in the morning and six in the afternoon, specially curated for each person and all done by AI. 80 000 people, 1 200 agencies, 4 000 clients and 5 000 000 000 files, and AI is the connection engine. Extraordinary.

Sadoun commented on a very important fact: that marketers aren’t spending less in marketing — they’re spending more but less with agencies. So, more activity is being created in-house or spent directly with key tech media. He defended Cannes Lions as being crucial for the industry for two reasons: “Our work needs to be judged firstly so that we understand our level and recognise our people; and, secondly, for inspiration, and the festival is bringing this back this year.”

He recognised he owes his career to creativity. When you have good ideas, you always win!

Sadoun, Law and chief strategy officer Carla Serrano responded to 20 questions from 20 global leaders from our industry, and this helped to understand what Marcel is and why the decision was taken. The audience also asked about consultancies; Sadoun responded that, nowadays, Accenture can’t compete with agencies because they don’t have the talent but that Accenture works on business transformation and agencies work on creativity and innovation, and both will converge at the end of the day.

New convenience range with Clover’s Whistling Chef

Clover has launched an ambitious new venture into the convenience foods category with a ready-to-eat range branded The Whistling Chef.

Clover Whistling Chef rangeThis latest range comes complete with first-to-Africa FreshVacSeal packaging technology that is meant to allow consumers to enjoy a fresh meal with an extended shelf life. This is a patent, unique to Clover’s Whistling Chef range, that is preservative- and colourant-free.

Says Mone Gerryts, Clover marketing manager, “The Whistling Chef is not just a clever brand name — these nutritious and delicious meals, that offer family-favourite recipes, actually whistle in the microwave when they’re perfectly heated. What’s more is that each meal undergoes 10 quality checks, has an innovative ‘tray plate’ for easy eating, and a first to market ‘no-pierce’ film.”

Launched at Melrose Arch with the help of local celebs Pearl Thusi and Ntokozo Dlamini, Clover’s latest products promise convenience with quality ingredients: “We know what a struggle it is for families, moms who want to take the night off, and executives and students to rustle up a dinner that is nutritious, containing real, fresh ingredients that is ready in just a few minutes. It’s for this reason that we’ve created The Whistling Chef range.”

The offering has launched with five initial variants including Creamy Macaroni & Cheese; Cottage Pie; Creamy Alfredo; Beef Lasagne and Spaghetti Bolognaise.

Mone says the FreshVacSeal technology means a pasteurised, longer shelf life and there’s no need to pierce the film on the meal either — your meal will literally whistle and let you know when it’s ready.

The Whistling Chef range is completely halaal, and has been developed by food technologists and specialists. The range is available at select retailers and forecourts nationwide.

Sodastream’s Russia kit for soccer lovers

In celebration of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, sparkling water brand Sodastream has launched a humorous “I couldn’t make it to Russia” kit. The goal is to make soccer fans feel as if they’re in Russia supporting their favorite team, from the comfort of their homes.

Sodastream I couldn't make it to Russia kitSodaStream’s kit includes everything needed to make soccer fans feel a part of the beautiful game: “Kvass”, an alcoholic concentrate to be added to sparkling water to recreate the famous Russian beer-resembling drink; the spirit sparkling water-maker; and a “chapka” traditional Russian hat.

Says Ferdinand Barckhahn, SodaStream GM, “The world cup is the world’s biggest soccer event that fans across the world have been waiting for, for four years. We at SodaStream want to bring the fun to those who are unable to physically attend the world cup and to liberate them from schlepping heavy and polluting plastic bottles.”

Kvass is an iconic Russian beverage, resembling German malt beer, that contains 1.8% alcohol. The SodaStream Kvass-flavored 200ml alcoholic concentrate will create 2l of ready-to-drink beverage, making it the perfect accessory for hosting guests on game night, plus the Russian fake-fur hat will let you serve your guests in style.
