African Echo: How sheng is changing the Kenyan marketing landscape

by Betty Kairo. Increasingly, markets are more alive to the nuances of global social histories. Recent movements to counter the effects of the erasure of black narratives have fueled this curiosity even further; movements such as #feesmust fall and #blacklivesmatter are changing how people see the world, and this change is affecting purchasing decisions. The Kenyan market is no stranger to this phenomenon.

In conceptualisation meetings, we find ourselves looking for ways to embed ourselves within this framework. And, each time we do so, we find that use of language is one of the critical ways of doing so.

Carrier of culture

There’s something about language. It’s more than a way we speak; it carries with it cultural histories and ways of seeing the world. Kenyan writer, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o puts it this way: “Language, any language, has a dual character: it is both a means of communication and a carrier of culture.” And, if there’s any language that is currently speaking to Kenya’s urban street culture, it’s “sheng”.

Sheng is a creole language (“a stable natural language developed from a mixture of different languages” and has become a mother tongue, according to Wikipedia) that heavily borrows its phonology and modified vocabulary from Swahili and English (hence sheng) and several other African and European languages. Rumored to have been birthed in the 1950s in Eastlands, Nairobi, it was an organic solution to the need for a common tongue for labourers on the railway system. It spread further through the matatu (mini-bus taxi) and music industries and, more recently, social media.

According to Wikipedia, there are 68 languages spoken in Kenya. If language carries culture, then it’s safe to say that the cultural influence on sheng is very diverse. Perhaps it’s this diversity that lends to the richness and depth of the language that’s attracted the attention of several marketers. More likely though, it’s the use of the language as a tool of trade by working-class Kenyans. It’s used in kiosks, on matatus, at supermarket tills and so forth in most of the major cities and towns.

Not without faults

Despite being far more developed than a pidgin language (a simplified form that develops as a means of communication between a limited number of people or groups of people, according to Wikipedia), sheng is not without its faults. It’s been criticised for lack of regularised grammar and a stable vocabulary, and dialects may change within a quick 20-minute drive. This is doubly complicated because there are no ‘sheng’ people, which means no-one holds enough of a claim on the language to standardise it.

Not to back down from a challenge though, Kenyan artists, marketers and politicians have scoured the vocabulary for the words that transcend these limitations. This effort has established a kind of ‘agreed-upon’ space in the language that cuts nationally. Several of these words have drifted their way to the front of campaigns, with Barclays running “mkopo wa salo” (salary advance), Safaricom running “ponyoka na pick up” (win a pickup) or Kenya Commercial Bank’s “Bankika na KCB”, to name a few.

Still, in the age of the strength of Black Panther, when the whole world is looking for different ways to show accurate representation of black peoples, sheng is a handy tool for any Kenyan copywriter to have in their arsenal.

Layered-speak

Sheng’s strength lies in its ability to create the double entendre, phrases that carry loaded meanings — not always risqué or indecent but, more often, good old double-meaning, innuendo or play on words. This kind of layered-speak communicates not only the idea but the emotion underneath the idea, suggestive of how the idea should be received.

A good example of this is “ponyoka na pick up”. Taken literally, the words “ponyoka na” mean “to take off with”. But a pickup can’t take off; it isn’t a rocket or a plane. Rather, the word alludes to a feeling of elation or elevation that comes into one’s life when you own a pickup. This is a much stronger emotion, and one that could not have been created by the phrase “win a pickup!”

In a world that’s given us Black Panther, when people everywhere are looking for different ways to accurately represent black people, sheng is a handy tool for any Kenyan copywriter to have in their arsenal.

Mad Men — they didn’t create it out of thin air

by Luanne Slingerland (@LuanneS) Are women in the creative industry heard and are they still facing challenges? As August celebrates Women’s Month in South Africa — although, given the different roles the average woman takes on in her daily life, every month should be an opportunity to celebrate women — I recently took the opportunity to check in with some of my young female colleagues on whether the advertising industry is evolving in the right direction and if they have more of a voice.

As you might have guessed, things aren’t changing as quickly as they should, especially for black women in the industry.

Luanne Slingerland: What made you decide to enter the industry?
Lydia Oberholzer
(30, project manager/art director): I always wanted to make the ads I saw on television. I didn’t know a thing about the ad industry back then, but just knew it excited me.

Tafadzwa (Taffy) Muzwa (25, strategist): My dream was actually to become a music producer and work under the glorious wings of Timbaland. I wanted to create music that would make people feel the way I do when I hear music; it makes me feel something. My mother did not agree with giving me a private school education in order to build a career that was viewed as a hobby. So, I asked myself where else I could create something that made me feel something — and somehow that led to marketing, branding and then to advertising. I could create a feeling through brands.

Akona Golimpi (27, art director): I had no idea what I was getting myself into. All I knew is that I was good at drawing back in high school. At the time, a classmate suggested I get into a course called graphic design, and I fell in love with it, especially because it was a white-dominated field.

LS: What challenges do you face?
LO:
We’re not taken seriously as women. Generally, people assume that because I’m young that I’m inexperienced, which is wrong.

AG: Being in a field that is male-dominated is a challenge on its own, then throw in the fact that I’m a black young woman to double the challenge. We also wonder, are we employed for our skills or our skin (BBBEE)? And if that’s not enough, as women, we do not support each other; we’re jealous of each other.

TM: When you are told what you can and cannot do, what you can and cannot be, it poses a tough challenge as a black female creative and strategist. You often feel like an imposter. Thankfully, I’m surrounded by women with high IQ and EQ who encourage and teach me on a daily basis.

LS: Do you think women have the same opportunities as men?
TM:
No. There is not just a bias towards women and our capabilities of not being at the table, but also being a part of war-room ideas from the start in some agencies.

AG: Agreed, women are really fighting to be recognised in this field, so that has to change.

LO: Men still have an advantage purely because they are men. I have seen men considered for projects and promotions over their female counterparts because they come across as more confident. The chain reaction this has is that, every time a man gets to work on a big project instead of a woman, she has one less opportunity to prove herself, grow and learn.

LS: So, our industry is not evolving?
AG:
Yes, things are slowly shifting. Women are becoming louder; we’re not silent anymore.

TM: With the increase in appointments of female MDs, and the increase in female strategists and creatives, yes, the industry is evolving. Slowly. To further evolve, I believe we need more women (from various backgrounds and race) in senior roles that have a single agenda of pulling young women into breaking the traditional men’s club. And we need men who believe in the same, who want to see the success of women in our industry because our success is theirs, too.

LS: Where do you think women have the advantage over men in the industry?
AG:
On pretty much everything. We have the same abilities as men; we have so much to offer and maybe that’s what men fear *wink*. We have so much more influence — “sell a product to a female and if she’s sold, it’s easy to sell to a man”.

LO: I agree! Women have the buying power, so I think, in advertising, we have a natural knack for selling to other women.

TM: It comes down to empathy. We embody empathy!

LS: Who is your female role model in the industry?
LO:
I don’t have one role model. I’m inspired by the ladies who are making their mark and raising the bar for the rest of us. Every time a young woman is featured in “Young, Gifted & Killing It!”, the progress bar jumps a little further.

AG: My role model is every woman fighting the mediocracy system.

TM: Monalisa Zwambila, CEO of R\VERBED [Riverbed]. Not only does she own and manage one of the largest independent, black-woman-owned advertising agencies, but she has a passion for music and she believes in “doing great things for good — Greater Good”. She embodies great possibilities for a young dreamer with a heart for people, such as myself.

•••

I believe that, to create an environment that allows and encourage women to flourish, we need to support them in their various capacities, whether it is juggling families, parent-teacher meetings and lift clubs, or driving their own side businesses. Let’s applaud every woman trying to make her mark, who has made her mark, and those who are paving the way for the next generation of female creative talent.

YGK: Nwabisa Mda, Thembe Mahlaba & Bongeka Masango

by Veli Ngubane (@TheNduna) This Women’s Month we showcase three phenomenal young women — Nwabisa Mda (@NwiseWise), Thembe Mahlaba (@_Thembe) ‏and Bongeka Masango (@IAmNotBongi) — who are changing how we consume content with an authentic platform that reflects the life and times of youth culture in Africa, in all its glory: Pap Culture (@papculturesa‏).

Welcome to Pap Culture every WednesdayVeli Ngubane: How did you all meet and what keeps you together?
Pap Culture:
Bongeka and Thembe went to high school together (Pinetown Girls High School) but went separate ways in varsity (Bongeka Rhodes University and Thembe University of Cape Town). Thembe then met Nwabisa in varsity (around 2011 / 2012) through a mutual friend and then, a year or two later, they lived together. So, when Bongeka completed her studies and moved to Cape Town in 2015, Thembe introduced her to Nwabisa.

What keeps us together is that we’ve really come to appreciate the power and strength we have as a team/unit. We are stronger together and every hurdle we’ve had to overcome has been that much easier to because we’re always able to count on each other to support one another. Where one falls short, there’re two others to fill that gap. But, more importantly, we’re friends [who] genuinely enjoy each other’s company. We’re always laughing, even over the most-random things. So, we’re able to carry that energy through into the work that we do.

VN: Please explain what you actually do and how an average day looks like for you?
Nwabisa Mda:
I work as a strategist at a marketing communications agency based in Cape Town and an average day consists of a lot of emails, building presentations, meeting after meeting and [attending] to WhatsApp (because we have a group for Pap Culture and a lot of work-related chats happen in there). So, it’s a lot of juggling between these two jobs.

Thembe Mahlaba: I work flexible hours doing social media for an NGO. So, I don’t have to hustle in traffic in the morning but work from the confines of my flat, with wifi that sometimes doesn’t cooperate. Then the numerous back-and-forth messaging between the three of us about either about the episode(s) coming up that need(s) to be reviewed, etc. Answering questions and emails from potential clients, making calls to clarify messages sent in the group chat (there is A LOT OF CHATTING INVOLVED), as well as brainstorming on the move.

Bongeka Masango: I work in advertising. So, my day-to-day consists a lot on planning and executing advertising material for my clients.

VN: What is Pap Culture and how did you come up with the name?
PC:
Pap Culture is a proudly South African entertainment hub that houses content [which] aims to be an authentic platform that reflects the life and times of youth culture in Africa in all it’s glory (highs and lows).

We want the platform to transcend the traditional world of entertainment, to solidify ourselves as credible online content producers. Currently, the platform is segmented into four core programmes: Pap Culture Ride Along (where we interview guests in a vehicle), Pap Culture On Location (vox-pop-style content that captures us at events or in and around different places across the country), Pap Culture Plays [very much focused on us competing against each other in a game we call “Guess The…” (eg Guess the TV Show, Guess the Song, Guess the Celebrity Ex)] and then Pap Culture Talks (where we often get to sit down with a number of guests and unpack a topic related to the theme of the month).

Then, from time to time, we produce special series under Pap Culture Presents. So, we’ve just come off a series of content called Sunday Lunch with Pap Culture. We dined in true Sunday-lunch style, with Thembe cooking us a meal (which we shared in a ‘How to Make…’ video that went live on Wednesdays) and then we were joined by some of our creative faves and just got to catch up and discuss a topic that was a heated conversation off-camera (this went live on Sundays). https://youtu.be/7u1mrc6v6uA

We aim to create fresh/thought-provoking content that leaves people with a smile on their faces and has them clicking pause to indulge in a good long laugh. However, more importantly, we want people to indulge in their own conversations off of our content to open up more dialogue about the things that matter to young people.

The name Pap Culture? Well, the story isn’t as profound as one would think. We had been meeting up a number of times to discuss the creators [who] inspire us, what we wanted this platform to be, what type of content we wanted to create and just brainstorming ideas of what we’d call the channel. So, Thembe, in one of our conversations mistakenly said “pap culture” when she was trying to say “pop culture” and we all just paused, laughed and knew that that had to be the name of the channel. It just made sense and felt like such a catchy name. Of course, the meaning in the world of our supporters has taken many different forms and it’s been amazing to hear what other people think.

VN: What is driving youth culture and what trends have you seen this year?
NM: I believe what drives youth culture is us seeing so many more young creatives take the plunge and starting their own creative hubs, be it through music, video content, photography, fashion, art — the list is endless. It’s seeing our peers really reaching for their dreams fearlessly and unapologetically. It’s such a motivator to see people just like you make the most of the little they have, so I believe this definitely inspires more young people to do the same… to just start!

As far as trends, I’d definitely say video content. I’m seeing more and more people stretch their creative muscles into video and diversifying their offering to incorporate video content. Whether through YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram Stories/Live and now IGTV, a lot more people are getting involved.

TM: It depends which lens you look at [through]. A single trend is not happening at one given time; a lot of things are moving at the same time. We continue to want to be heard in different spaces, from politics, fashion, the arts etc. We continue to spark vital conversations about mental health and the importance of debunking the black family stereotyping that comes with MH in those spaces. We want to talk about the high and rising numbers of femicide. We are talking about self-love and what that looks like; we are encouraging the importance of following your dreams and that unfortunately not everyone has the means to do that. But we also want to have a good time, which is fairly not a trend but sometimes that it’s the break we need from the sometimes harsh realities of South Africa.

BM: I think what’s been driving youth culture for the past few years is excellence. It’s a bit stressful because you feel so much pressure to be great but, at the same time, you’re watching your peers live out their dreams and you understand that anything is possible.

VN: Why do you think the industry is struggling with transformation?
NM:
I think it’s struggling because the industry is still dominated by ‘old people’ who don’t want to let go of the reins (as DJ Khaled would call them: “dinosaurs”). There just aren’t enough opportunities being given to young people who have so much potential and are more than capable of stepping up and learning from those who’ve paved a great foundation for us to be able to take things to the next level, and allow us to also move up the ranks. There’s always comes a moment, a tug-of-war of sorts that wrestles between risk vs return, where it just becomes a safer option to go with existing systems, as opposed to opening up room for new ways of working, thinking, creativity etc.

TM: The industry continues to struggle because of who those [who] still ‘own’ and hold power in the industry.

BM: I think people just don’t want to let go and truly allow new people/thinkers in. The gatekeepers are so comfortable in the way things are, they don’t want to let anyone else in.

VN: What’s it like to work as females in a male dominated industry and how do you think the industry may attract more female creatives?
NM:
Well, on the YouTube side, I don’t really feel I’m in a male-dominated space because our journey thus far has allowed for us to make our own rules and define our own path and future. Yes, there’s a shortage of females on the platform, but I don’t know that that’s only attributed to the platform being dominated by men. More than anything, I feel there’s not enough people of colour creating on the platform and I think a lot of that has to do with a lack of resources to create on the platform, fear of the unknown and data issues, just to name a few.

But on the 9–5 front, I do think I’m in a male-dominated space. When I started working, I was very intimidated by it and then coupled with the anxiety around the fact that I was young, black and inexperienced. But I had to rise above and constantly remind myself that I am valuable and I have a lot to offer. Overall, I do think there’s not enough of an even balance of women in the various departments and, more so, not enough women in leadership positions. So, as far as attracting more women, I do believe women are already interested and actively going out of their way to be seen and heard; there just aren’t enough doors opening up to welcome them in.

TM: In our interview with Neo Baepi last year, Neo said, “Which industry isn’t male dominated?” So, I guess it’s about pushing through and, when the opportunity presents itself, to make room for other womxn in the room. Create that job for her/them, hire her/them, recommend them for the job because I don’t think it’s that we think we can’t make it in those spaces; we just aren’t let in. So, if you’re already inside, girl, invite the rest of us in.

BM: I haven’t really felt like I’m a female in a male-dominated industry. Especially not in the arts. So far, I’ve experienced support from everyone.

VN: How does Pap Culture make money?
PC:
At this stage, most of the money we’ve made has been through brand work / campaigns and we’ve invested our own money when we’ve needed to. But we’re in the process of looking for investors as we really want to create without limits while also building a more-sustainable working process. Brand work is great but it comes few and far between, and so we want to be able create as though we’re running a fully- fledged production house. We also make [a] very little money through YouTube but, to really make a lot of money there, you need to have high numbers in terms of views and subscribers.

VN: Where and when do you have your best ideas?
NM:
Often in the late hours of the night /am. I’m probably on a WhatsApp video call with Thembe and we are going on and on about different ideas we want to do. Especially after watching content produced/directed by our favourite creators. But other ideas also come out of seeing my peers making great strides in their careers. I get very inspired when I see others succeed. It makes me want to achieve my personal goals even more.

TM: Literally anywhere. Then, if we aren’t together, I will WhatsApp them the idea.

BM: It’s such a clichéd answer but in the shower and in my dreams.

VN: What advice can you give to young women wanting to get into the business?
PC:
This can be applied across the gender spectrum really but 1) just start, 2) consistency is key and 3) have fun. But specifically, to our sisters out there, we need your voices. Don’t be discouraged just because we are a minority in the creative space. You are enough and you are better off trying and failing, then to not have tried at all. There’s lots to learn in this journey, and don’t allow your ideas to just exist on the pages in your inspiration book and in your head. Take the leap of faith, it’s worth the ride.

VN: Tell me something about yourselves not generally known.
NM:
Because I’m an only child, once upon a time I wanted to have five children (four boys and one girl) and I wanted them to be two years apart. But, after seeing a mother struggle just to buy food at McDonalds for her kids and their friends, I realised that idea had to die. She was so overwhelmed it literally put me off the whole thing.

TM: I love coffee.

BM: I used to really want to be a pilot growing up but couldn’t afford pilot training. I get so jealous when I go to the airport and I see female pilots.

VN: What exciting projects are you working on at the moment [at the time of this interview]?
PC:
We’re currently working on content for Women’s Month (August) and Heritage month (September). We can’t say too much cause there’s many moving parts and we’re working different people as we go along. But the aim of all this content is to continue to build on the conversations we’ve started on the channel around reframing what it looks like to celebrate women and showcasing our power and how dynamic we are during August. Then further unpacking how we as young people are navigating our heritage and culture in modern times and the implications on the future.

VN: Please would you supply two or more pieces of work you have been involved in?

Media Redefined: How to win a Cannes Media Lion

by Martin MacGregor (@MartMacG) I’ve had a look through this year’s Cannes Lion winners and there are two very clear themes that are being rewarded: relevance and dominance.

Relevance

Relevance now is all about how well data has been mined to serve up the right message to the right consumer at the right place and time. The better the data has been analysed, the tighter the targeting and the more relevant the message will be. The Media Lion Grand Prix this year was given to the ultimate relevance campaign for Tesco’s. It was called “Food Love Stories” and used a plethora of data to build recipes across UK, relevant right down to the street that you lived in. It is this kind of ultra-localised campaign that is the future of both media and message. Ultimately, every message will be customised and served just for you.

A further example of relevance was a campaign for Argos in the UK called “80 days of Argos”. It wanted to push its same-day delivery service, and so developed a bespoke TV ad every day for 80 days (with a cheap and efficient production solve!) with a one-day-only same-day delivery promotion. But the real key to getting traction for the campaign was ensuring the messaging was relevant to each day and what consumers would most likely be interested in. Some days it was obvious (Fitbits for the London Marathon) but others relied on robust data which pointed to what was most likely to be bought on that day.

https://youtu.be/nwEWquU-YgA

Dominance

In the old days, dominance was about spending big money on a big campaign and dominating competitors by outshouting them. A fragmented media landscape has now made this very difficult. Only big-budget brands, usually with a big announcement are able to that these days — think the Absa relaunch and South African Reserve Bank launching the Mandela 100 notes.

Dominance now means dominating a small and targeted space or time, but with a substantial twist.

I went to a talk by a “Twitter scientist” a few years back and he spoke about a new marketing formula based on an old scientific one: Force of Media = Mass of Media x Social Acceleration. What this means is that, even if media spend is small, if the idea is powerful enough and generates social conversations, it will still have the necessary force and impact.

A great example of this was a Gold winner called “David Bowie is Here” to advertise a new David Bowie exhibition in New York sponsored by Spotify. Instead of doing a city-wide advertising campaign, a takeover was done of the subway station he used in SoHo, showcasing his life in the city through artwork and photography and how it influenced the music he created. He was even on the metro cards. Dominating this small space was all that was needed to create a huge amount of conversation and actually make the station a must-view destination.

https://youtu.be/xaHWMihcTVw

Another good example of a dominance strategy was a campaign by Intel at the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang this year. It was trying to change the perception that Intel was a PC company, and that the world actually runs on Intel technology. Here it took one moment in one event — the opening ceremony at the games — and dominated it by creating the Olympic rings in the sky using drones, something that’d never been done before. The visuals were spectacular and, while the TV audience itself would’ve been limited, it was shared on a global scale; I remember seeing it. Intel really understood the power of social acceleration.

https://youtu.be/fCd6P7Ya160

So, if you want to win a Cannes Media Lion next year, you’ll be much closer to success if you focus on two different types of ideas : data-driven hyper-relevant messages or dominance of a place or time with huge social acceleration potential. Funnily enough, and this is not always the case with awards, these two kinds of ideas are likely to be very successful for your clients as well.

Agency Life: Surviving Loeries 101 #Loeries2018

by TJ Njozela (@tj_njozela) I don’t know about y’all but this year seems to have flown by quicker than drinks at an open bar. January was just yesterday, then one lumbar puncture and some schedule 5 meds later (it’s an inside joke), and now it’s The Loeries. And, if you know anything about Loeries, you know that it’s about three things: recognising the best work in the industry from across the continent, networking, and getting turnt.

Loeries logo 2018Obvs, those are the three things you want to do at the awards, and probably a few others well. But, before you head out and go ham, there are also a few don’ts that will help to ensure that the good times don’t turn into regrets.

Don’t be a hater

We all have our own perspective on work that’s on fire and work that belongs on a sheet of two-ply TP. And it’s ok to have your own point of view. It’s also ok to feel a piece of work more than another one. Mara, if you’re not on a judging panel, don’t do that thing of, well, judging. Have an opinion, sure, if you don’t like something. But remember that a panel of industry leaders from different disciplines, agencies, and personal opinions, headed by some of the best thinkers from around the world, and a whole jury chairperson, don’t see things the way you do. Haters gon’ hate. Potatoes gon’ potate. That’s just facts of life. And if people like potatoes more than they like you, you might have ‘n bietjie nyana problem there.

Don’t poop at the parties

Two things happened to pretty much everyone who watched Flula’s video about Jennifer who poops at parties. One, lols. Two, realising that you know someone like Jennifer. They go by different names. Buzzkill, Wet Blanket, Slow Down, Mitch, etc. Me, personally, I can’t even deal. Like, if you’re not having a good time at the party, vaya. All you’ll have is FOMO when everybody talks about the craziness that happened, and everything you missed out on, but rather they talk about that than how you were just killing everybody’s vibe. The moral of the story? Rather turn up missing than be a party pooper.

Don’t leave your dignity unattended

Like any year at Loeries, some of us are bound to bump into the self-respect we negligently misplaced after one too many tequilas. Some never find theirs and their dignity teeters between urban legends and industry rumours. Don’t wait until your hair is a tangled with a mixture of canapés and too much liquor, or you get the “Sure, buddy” look from people who don’t believe that’s dandruff on your nose, or a video of you dancing on top of the bar in your polka dot-drawers makes its rounds on WhatsApp groups. Hayi. Make sure your dignity is always close by. If you find yourself disappointedly looking in the mirror, asking yourself “Is this you?”, chances are you’re about to lose your dignity. Instead of going for one more round, rather go back to your hotel. There’s nothing wrong with having fun. But, also, you’re an adult. Therefore, you must do the adulting.

•••

Loeries is an exciting time for the whole industry. There’s the thrill of winning, the excitement of the parties where you know k’sazobalit. It’s kinda like bungee jumping. It’s fun coz there’s people who know what they’re doing, a cord, and an anchor. Without those things, trust, it wouldn’t be fun. Think of these don’ts as your safety mechanisms that will help you snap back to reality, without any regrets, afterwards.

Media Design: CHIPS!, Fluxus cc V TRE, Hodinkee, Metal

Shane de Lange (@shanenilfunct)’s weekly analysis of media design — both past and present, print and online — from South Africa and around the world:

  • Local/print: CHIPS! embraces the feminine zeitgeist in the most-accessible way, focusing on the theme of “Matriarchy”
  • Iconic: Fluxus Newspaper cc V TRE was a precursor to the indie zines of the late ’70s, inventing the DIY aesthetic and rebellious anti-establishment attitude that punk would eventually come to represent
  • Online: Hodinkee grants access to considered criticism and reportage about high-quality watches and the lives of influential people who wear them
  • International/print: Metal is quasi-avant-garde magazine with an internationalist, indie worldview

Chips Issue 6, print and online, August 2018Evolving from its original quarterly print format, CHIPS! has become a predominantly online publication. Issue 6 comes in conjunction with Women’s Month this August, returning in print form for the first time since #2. Themed “Matriarchy”, this issue explores pertinent ideas related to women that form the fabric of society today, such as contemporary notions of motherhood and matriarchy. What better way to symbolise such notions than to play with a bit of visual hyperbole, and place vintage Corningware casseroles and cookware dishes on the cover, with the iconic “Cornflower” pattern decoration to boot? A contentious choice of objects to use on a matriarchy-themed cover, to say the least.

Parody is the name of the game on this cover, and most people can relate to that passed-down pot that their mother got for her wedding, now old, all scratched and scuffed but still cooking beautifully. It’s ironic that Corningware was discovered by accident, made from pyroceram, a white glass-ceramic material that can withstand heavy thermal shock. According to Wikipedia, it was originally developed for the “ballistic missile program as a heat-resistant material for nose cones”. And, so, Corningware is arguably an apt metaphor for matriarchy. Incidentally, Corningware is currently celebrating its 60th anniversary.

Focusing on present-day interpretations of ‘age-old’ designations that have ‘traditionally’ been ‘given’ to women since the beginning of time, such as aunty, ouma, and gogo, CHIPS! #6 advocates variety, equality, respect, tradition, and difference. By showcasing ‘familiar’ stories, much like Corningware, about experiences we’ve all had with food alongside the important women in our lives — from a tale about a child brought-up in a in a Catholic kitchen with two mothers to a story about a 19th century writer, Barbare Jorjadze, who happened to write a cookbook that became a cultural staple while simultaneously publishing feminist manifestos that defied the patriarchal power structures of the time — this issue embraces the feminine zeitgeist in the most-accessible way.

Heart-Love-Polygon-Geometric-Flat-Design-Icon-Illustration by lekkyjustdoit courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos   METAL (Spain), issue 39, 2018

Metal Magazine, print and online, Issue 39 Spring Summer 2018Barcelona-based METAL magazine has been around since 2006. For an A-list publication, it’s somehow maintained its independent publishing spirit, oozing edginess and staying fresh. Published biannually and keeping in line with its quasi-avant-garde, internationalist, indie worldview, the magazine is a combination of fashion, photography, and art, showcasing the latest talent globally.

Staying true to its provocative name, METAL issue #39 is themed “Power to the People”, and features two cult-inspired covers. The first is an image taken by photographer and Instagram celebrity, John Yuyi, a self-portrait in Calvin Klein. The second is a portrait of trans model, Casil McArthur, dressed in Kenzo and photographed by Clément Pascal. Although the print version of the magazine is rad, Metal’s website has its own voice delivering exclusive content, all the while maintaining synergy with its printed sibling.

Online

Heart-Love-Polygon-Geometric-Flat-Design-Icon-Illustration by lekkyjustdoit courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos   Hodinkee (US), volume 2, 2018

Hodinkee, print and online, volume 2 August 2018 - Jony IveOver a period of seven years, Hodinkee magazine has grown into an authority in the field of contemporary and classic wristwatch connoisseurship. Founder, Benjamin Clymer, is known for his awareness of historical and modern haute horlogerie (the ‘high art’ of watchmaking) and. more importantly. his ability to explain this topic in an engaging and accessible way. The second edition of Hodinkee takes the baton from the magazine’s first exploration into print, with a layered study of watches and all that this world encompasses, including the influential people who appreciate haute horlogerie.

Arguably one of the most-intriguing creative people on the planet, Jony Ive, the chief design officer at Apple, features on the cover. The preeminent industrial designer of his generation, Ive is interviewed by Clymer himself in this issue, where he exposes his fetish for watches and how his fascination with orthodox Swiss watchmaking practices inadvertently influenced the creation of the best-selling watch on the planet, the Apple Watch. Sharing his perspective on the future for the technology of watchmaking, Ive is joined by other important contributors, including filmmaker Spike Lee and creative director Scott Dadich (CEO at Godfrey Dadich Partners, executive producer of the Abstract documentary series on Netflix, and ex-editor-in-chief of Wired magazine), among others.

Hodinkee online grants access to the content featured in the magazine, with considered criticism and reportage about quality watches and the people who wear them. The website is straightforward and, much like its raison d’être, executed in orthodox fashion, following timeless design practices. Overall, a pleasant and very informative experience.

Iconic

Heart-Love-Polygon-Geometric-Flat-Design-Icon-Illustration by lekkyjustdoit courtesy of FreeDigitalPhotos   The Fluxus newspaper, cc V TRE (US, circa 1964) a V TRE Extra (US, circa 1979)

cc V TRE, issue 1 1964, and V TRE EXTRA, issue 11 1979, Fluxus NewspaperA successor to George Brecht’s original prototype, “V Tre”, cc V TRE was the first issue of the Fluxus newspaper, edited by Brecht and George Maciunas (the founder of the movement). It was common for this four-page broadsheet to change its title, the most-used being “Fluxus cc V TRE” and “Fluxus Vacuum TrapEzoid”, with the final issue titled “a V TRE Extra”. Published in New York from 1964 to 1979, the editors described the Fluxus newspaper as “the official organ of Fluxus”. Following neo-Dada traditions and anti-art beliefs, six issues were distributed between 1964 and 1966, but production slackened heavily thereafter.

Maciunas was colorblind, and most Fluxus publications were printed in grayscale as a result. Issue #1 of the Fluxus newspaper was published in January of ’64, and the cover included a list of Fluxus yearbooks with prices, alongside a feature about the Fluxus editorial council, and an announcement about the first Fluxfestival. Each issue experimented with a vast array of typographic choices but slab serifs and gothic typefaces seems to have been the preferred choices, using a typographic language similar to Dada publications during the inter-world-war period. Content inside issue #1 included an editorial note by Brecht, and a writeup about an experimental composition, Poéme Symphonique, by the infamous composer, Gyorgy Ligeti. The newspaper served as a platform to advertise the prolific Fluxus happenings, which hail back to the original Dada happenings and the Cabaret Voltaire.

The spirit of Dadaism arguably lived on through Fluxus, and the spirit of Fluxus still lives on to this day, in happenings and performances, and in art and design; the movement has continued since Maciunas’ death in 1978. The final issue of the Fluxus newspaper, issue #11, was published in 1979 by Geoffrey Hendricks shortly after Maciunas’ death. In many ways, the Fluxus newspaper was a precursor to the punk zines to come during the late ’70s. It was affordable and accessible, exhibiting the DIY aesthetic (or rather anti-aesthetic) and rebellious anti-establishment attitude that punk would come to represent. As such, cc V TRE and a V TRE Extra, and all the publications in between, exhibit qualities that contemporary society could learn from to evolve beyond the shallow commercial, consumerist, materialist, borderline-narcissistic limbo we call our reality today.
