OnShelf Pharma focuses on women in retail

OnShelf Pharma: How do women fare in the South African retail marketWhile women in South Africa are the focus of August, retailers are looking closely at the overall economic status of women where available data, specific to the FMCG female customer, is sparse, according to a research round-up by Eben Esterhuizen, OnShelf Pharma general manager.

Out of SA’s 57.7m people, 51% is female, with an unemployment rate among women at 29.5%. Women are more likely than men to be involved in unpaid work and, of the informal sector (which accounts for 17.4% of total SA employment), 47.6% is female, compared to 30.6% of men. Clearly, times are tough, with most of the limited job creation happening in the informal sector.

In a recent survey done by Sanlam, some interesting findings emerged with regards to women’s regular spend. The stats aren’t conclusive but indicative, as Danelle van Heerde, Sanlam Personal Finance head of advice processes, says, “To drastically oversimplify the situation, women are generally earning less and paying more.”

In the survey, 98% of women says they spend more than R100 on monthly toiletries and only 23% of men do the same. Women spend over R1 500 a year on medical screening, vs only 1.2% of men. The majority of men, at 56.4%, spent nothing on contraceptives, while 51.2% of women purchased contraceptives monthly, with 30% of them spending more than R100.

This is against a background of South Africans spending R31 900 per second in retail stores in 2017.

According to Gareth Paterson, Nielsen retail vertical lead, SA has added 100 000 new traditional trade (eg spaza) and modern trade (hypermarkets, supermarkets) stores to its retail world in the last two decades. Nielsen describes the growth of the spaza shop as “exceptional”. Since women are the majority of people occupying the informal sector. it would add up that they are the ones predominantly shopping at the spazas.

Nielsen also reports that, by 2025, the SA population will have increased by 6% (approximately 3m people), with notable workforce changes, because more than 4.3m women will have entered the job market by then. With this in mind, retailers need to be prioritising product, price and ease of purchase for women, who’ll be even more prominent when making purchasing decisions in the future. As retailers, it would be prudent to get to know the different types of women consumers better, from the estimated 11.5m people who are part of a stokvel to the other end of the spectrum, the women heading towards a totally online shopping lifestyle, and those in between — the future for the local FMCG space in South Africa certainly appears to be young and female.

Momentum/Unisa Household Financial Wellness shows we’re ill

Momentum Unisa Household Financial Wellness Index Summary 2017The seventh round of the Momentum / Unisa Household Financial Wellness Index (2017), released this week, shows that, while financial success is very important for SA households, a staggering 73.5% was financially unwell in 2017.

The overall financial-wellness score consists of five forms of capital: human, social, physical, asset and environmental. The lowest capital score was registered by the asset capital index (households’ assets, liabilities and nett wealth), and attributed to a decrease in the assets to disposable income ratio ascribed to negative growth in house prices (the FNB House Price Index suggests that house prices declined by 1.1% in real terms between 2016 and 2017) and real investments in residential property increasing by less than 1% compared to 2016.

In addition, households’ financial assets were negatively affected by pension fund and life business surrenders to the value of R160.7bn during 2017.

SA households’ social capital score is a constant Achilles heel and shows that they don’t have the means or skills to take control of their finances. This is also evident from the financial literacy results that show the lack of skills in this domain.

Human capital index scores improved during the period 2011–2017, thanks to a growth in the pool of household members with completed secondary and tertiary qualifications; however, social capital levels remained low due to feelings of disempowerment, low levels of subjective wellbeing, financial vulnerability and low consumer confidence in the economy.

A sizable gap between human and social capital levels has been identified, indicative that, although the educational system delivers a growing number of matriculants and graduates, the students predominantly acquire academic knowledge and not high-level cognitive, social and communication skills, which would enabled them to live more-empowered lives.

The improvement in education also didn’t translate into a proportional increase in income. This disconnect between the human capital and physical capital index scores is indicative of a skills mismatch in the economy; the skills provided are out of kilter with the skills demanded by current and prospective employers.

The results show that there are many factors over which households have little control, but they also don’t budget, conduct very little debt-and financial planning and generally have very low financial literacy and capability levels. To ensure broad-based poverty reduction, household financial wellness growth and the reduction of stark household financial inequalities, there needs to be a national mind shift away from protectionist, redistributive and interventionist social policies towards policies geared at ensuring skills growth, personal empowerment, financial literacy and capability creation, the use of financial advisers and coaches/mentors and the direct monitoring of financial capability and wealth outcomes.

Forrester Analytics’ new video data

Forrester video data forecast
Supplied by Forrester. Click to enlarge.

Forrester Analytics’ new forecast shows consumers are accessing video content across a growing variety of channels; it also provides data on these video users across 14 categories, online vs offline video time spent, and the segmentation of video ad spending across TV, display video, and social video.

Online video is the main beneficiary of this changing landscape, with an expected 200m users in 2018, driving incremental video adspend from US$91bn in 2018 to US$103bn in 2023, while TV adspend is expected to hold roughly steady.

Advertisers should continue to diversify video ad budgets to ensure effective delivery of their message in this increasingly fragmented environment, while TV networks and distributors should continue to enhance their offerings to remain competitive by offering greater accessibility, better pricing options, and an improved ad experience.

#Loeries2018: Women in marketing, adland organise for change in Africa

by Herman Manson (@marklives) In 2017, only 3% of creative directors globally were female and, out of the top 50 most-influential CMOs, only a third were women. Women in Marketing, an organisation set up to address this gender imbalance in the advertising and marketing industries, is launching WiM Africa in Durban on tomorrow, Thursday, 16 August 2018, during Loeries Creative Week (book your ticket here for the launch event).

In this interview with MarkLives, Andrea Opoku, a director at Women in Marketing and founder of WiM Africa, discusses the launch of WiM Africa, the impact of the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements on adland, and what companies may do to an equitable work environment for women.

Andrea Opoku
Andrea Opoku

MarkLives logoWhat are your objectives for WiM Africa and what do you see as its major opportunities and challenges?
Andrea Opoku:
For WiM Global and WiM Africa, our aims are the same — to offer a platform for women in the marketing and advertising fields to be recognised and celebrated for their work. Also for women of all levels of seniority to feel empowered, be educated, inspired and connect with other women in the industry.

For WiM Africa, there is also the opportunity to showcase to the rest of the world (and we’ve made it our mission) what 21st Century Africa looks like. We want to show the transformative creativity and innovation that comes from the continent, the African stories that can resonate with anyone and the world-class work being done here. We do this through the WiM Awards which recognises the crème de la crème of brand and agency marketers around the world. The 2018 WiM Awards are now open for global submissions. I’m really hoping to encourage more submissions from the continent and particularly from women of colour.

The challenge for us in launching the WiM Africa network and sharing the platform is the size and complex nature of the continent. Each market has its own challenges and priorities when it comes to gender diversity in the industry. But there are always opportunities and, as we grow, we will meet the challenges of those markets where they are.

MarkLives logoWho will be driving this African hub initiative?
AO:
That will be me, with support from many key people across the region. My background is varied and cuts across industries, largely working client-side and as a consultant, and, in the last seven years or so, working on client projects in South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana. As a second-generation Ghanaian living in the UK [and] enjoying regular visits ‘back home’, I’ve seen how Ghana and the continent has evolved since the time of my parents and the speed of change now. I feel my work in recent years and my role as one of the directors at Women in Marketing has done a great deal to bring together my passions: branding, entrepreneurship, the empowerment of women and young people and to make a real difference in the development of the continent.

In my 18 years in the industry, and as one of the founding members of Women in Marketing, I have seen firsthand the challenges women face, particularly those who’ve taken time out to have a family and have tried to step back onto the ladder and make their way up… This is why I’m so passionate about the work we’re doing in at WiM and why I’m bringing it ‘back home’!

MarkLives logoWhat are the issues facing women in the modern (marketing, communications and advertising) workplace today?
AO: Many of the issues women faced in the workplace decades ago —inequalities in pay, pregnancy discrimination, sexual harassment, exclusion from certain projects — these are still very much prevalent today.

Women in Marketing logoThere are the challenges that are ‘part of the job/industry’ and that everyone faces: the pace of change, emerging technologies, squeeze on budgets and increased demands for ROI. But I feel there has been of late a real lack of clarity that has emerged in the aftermath of recent campaigns like #MeToo and #TimesUp. There is a sense of unease from both men and women, in some quarters, as to how to process the revelations, how to act now within their organisations and with colleagues of the opposite sex. A sense of not wanting to say the wrong thing or wondering if certain behaviours will be misconstrued.

Organisations have to do some real work around opening up conversations, allowing people to speak freely and, at the same time, ensuring measures are in place for recourse when accusations arise.

MarkLives logoWhat is structurally wrong with the industry (in South Africa, at least) that we consistently see such limited scope for the emergence of female ECDs and CCOs?
AO: Every market on the continent has its own challenges and priorities. Given South Africa’s history, the economic empowerment of black people (the BBBEE Act of 2003) has been made a priority for most organisations and many times will trump the work required to be put in for gender diversity.

It is difficult for organisations — we understand that — but, at the end of the day. the business case for diversity and inclusion across all categories, gender, race, physical ability, sexual orientation, particularly in our industry, still stands. When diverse teams and organisations are more representative of our customers, they offer a variety of viewpoints and a wider range of experience, which improves decision-making and problem-solving. Most business leaders agree with this and we are now seeing the business results from organisations such as HP and others to prove it.

MarkLives logoYour vision statement speaks to inclusiveness — about including men to achieve WiM’s objectives — have men come to the party?
AO:
Men have always been invited to the party! Change can’t happen if we exclude 50% of the population from the conversation .As much as we’d like to think the dial is moving, men still hold the reins of power in society and business.

I’m happy to say that some of WiM’s strongest advocates are men. Antonio Lucio Global, CMO of HP, for example, who Women in Marketing awarded the Equality Advocate of the Year award to in 2017, has done some amazing things within his organisation and for the industry. Also, if you take a look at some of the men on the Women in Marketing Advisory Council — Paul Frampton Calero, former group CEO, Havas Media Group UK and Ireland; and Colin Byrne, former CEO, UK & EMEA Weber Shandwick — all are doing great things in this space and supporting the work we do.

MarkLives logoWhat best practices should business put in place to ensure an equitable work environment for women?
AO:
You know, every organisation is different but I would start with just talking to your staff. Make a way for them to have frank and open discussions in confidence and really hear what they have to say about the challenges they face on a daily basis, both professionally and personally. Start from there.

Generally, having practices in place which encourage options for flexible working, a level of pay transparency, blind CV reviewing, ensuring that teams are made up of diverse individuals. Also ask the same of the agencies and suppliers your organisation works with. Hold them up to the same standards that you have in your organisation and make them accountable.

MarkLives logoPlease would you tell us about your Diversity and Equal Opportunities Audit programme?
AO:
It’s evident that there is a sea change in the industry and most organisations are somewhere along the journey to incorporate diverse teams. Later this year, we’ll be launching the WiM Diversity Charter, which will give organisations the opportunity to show their commitment by agreeing and signing the charter. The pledges within the charter will cover best practice in employee wellbeing, codes of behaviour, targets for increasing diversity across all lines (not just gender), and more. It’s an opportunity for brands, agencies, production houses to show that they are working towards making their teams fully diverse and inclusive. As part of the charter programme, we will provide guidance and share benchmarks for the industry in order to support those who have signed up.

A promise of action without accountability doesn’t amount to much, so we will periodically be assessing those organisations to identify shifts and provide opportunities for airing the challenges they face and sharing best practice.

MarkLives logoHow has the #MeToo movement impacted on WiM and on the marketing and advertising industries?
AO:
The #MeToo movement has had a huge impact on the industry; it’s definitely been a watershed moment. Gender equality, inclusiveness and pay parity were already on the agenda and a priority for many in the industry. #MeToo , #TimesUp and other such campaigns calling out sexual harassment across all industries have definitely accelerated the need for change and we are definitely seeing certain parts of the industry take action.

We are seeing it in advertising across certain markets; brands are working towards fairer, more inclusive and balanced representation of women in their advertising, which is what the WiM Africa launch event focuses on. In addition, agencies and brands are also making strides to change the industry from the inside out by bring more diversity in their ranks.

For WiM, this just amplifies what we’ve been saying for years, that women need to be seen, be recognised and celebratedbut also empowered and inspired to rise up and take their rightful place as drivers within the industry.

EDITORIAL: A decade of MarkLives

by Herman Manson (@marklives) Ten years ago today, MarkLives debuted on the South African web — the continuation of more than a decade’s worth of work in the marketing and advertising trade news world, starting with media.toolbox (the B2B trade newsletter launched in 1998 and covering the then very new world of online content, marketing and advertising) and including a brief sojourn into print (the less said about that, the better) before finally emerging as a brand and news product in its own right.

Transformed world

The world’s been transformed since I coded the very basic first media.toolbox site. From a publishing perspective, our primary delivery vehicle back in those days was email, the plain-text format running counter to the somewhat flashy html mails of the time (an eccentricity that readers found endearing — for the most part). I was a young writer (OK, I was just young, full stop) and had landed my first full-time gig at a print magazine transitioning from covering tech to the “new economy”; not quite 21, I’d made assistant editor, thanks to an ability to translate the techie speak of the day into plain English.

(Sometimes, the deficiencies in our education system have some limited and unexpected upsides. I remember my grade 8 English teacher walking into our class room, fresh from Joburg and newly transplanted into a rural Afrikaans community, and greeting us with a happy “Good morning, class.”

“Môre, juffrou,” we all responded. She picked away a tear but encouraged the (very) few of us fellow readers to expand our scope beyond the Afrikaans section of the school library. A new and very different world opened up in the books I now accessed. But, yes, plain English was ever the best anybody would get from yours truly.)

Appropriate to experiment

Writing about the way business was being changed by a more-connected world, and curious to explore its impact on media and publishing, I was publishing media.toolbox in my spare time. Nobody really knew yet what the web meant for media or how to monetise it, and I felt it appropriate to experiment with the medium I was writing about. The publisher of the above-said print title didn’t quite see it the same way. Instead of quitting the newsletter, I quit the publisher (wasn’t hard at all).

media.toolbox ran for 10 years, making peanuts, but I loved it. It was fresh and confident and published a broad range of views by people more interesting then than they are now (possibly, that includes me). In 2001, PC Magazine South Africa listed it as one of its Top 100 websites and it was a Highway Africa Award for the Innovative Use of New Media in Africa Finalist in 2003 and 2004. A major booze brand tried to sue us all the way from New York (it involved a story about a cat and dilated pupils, and I had “hurt the feelings of the founders”) but that didn’t get very far. Several high and mighty ad execs lost their cool and screamed threats of lawsuits down the phone line (a tradition that we discouraged but which has continued throughout the existence of both media.toolbox and MarkLives).

Short, educational and rather traumatising

Following media.toolbox would be a short, educational and rather traumatising stint in print media, taking on (the then) flush, established players such as AdVantage magazine, Marketing Mix and The Media. Enter the 2008 global recession, and it all went belly up. After all the stress and turmoil of the previous three years, it was kind of a relief; I decided to crash out of media for a year but realised I needed to keep a toe in the market so I wasn’t completely out of the loop, resulting in the launch of a blog called MarkLives.

“Mark” as a name has obvious links to marketing: making your mark, brand marks, etc. It also puts a human name as the focus for the site’s brand identity, a reminder of the kind of journalism that I want to  publish. Business, and media, is all about people, but the business press has turned us into a side issue as it runs after stats and numbers. I publish stories about the people who make up companies and their extended stakeholders — MarkLives is named to reflect that.

I didn’t expect the market to forget who I was quite as quickly as it did (12 months and everybody goes, “Who dis?”), and I didn’t expect those who remembered me to take to calling me Mark (every. damn. time). Both have happened (and the latter continues) but it turns out I’m fine with both of these.

More fiery than expected

Baking granola for Saturday farm markets (remember, launch blog so I can crash out of media) is good for the soul but not for one’s budget. Still, I recommend it for a good old-fashioned timeout. I did this for a year, happily (it was called Happy Granola), until my bank manager started complaining over-loudly. Launching back into the market as a freelancer, with MarkLives serving as an archive for my writing across various titles, including AdVantage and Bizcommunity, proved to be more fiery than expected…

Ogilvy Johannesburg had to give back a CLIO it won for the History Channel campaign after a takedown letter by the History Channel’s parent company to MarkLives, which featured the campaign, revealed that it’d never been approved by client in the first place. Twitter wasn’t troll-central back then; that was reserved for the comments section of websites, as you’ll see in the comment thread on that particular feature. Asking on which side of the scam debate the heavily awarded Trillion Dollar campaign for The Zimbabwean newspaper fell was another interesting debate (Cannes Lions ruled it legit) but awards organisers have taken a rather dim view of me ever since.

There was the ‘tiff’ with the Loeries, which lead to my media accreditation being revoked and later reinstated, following an intervention by the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF) and the South African Media Interest Group. The following year, accreditation was again declined but the Association for Communication and Advertising (ACA) stepped in to provide access to the awards. [This year, MarkLives — for the first time — will be participating in the Loeries as a full media partner, a project driven by its very professional PR agency (hat tip to Lingo Communications). This might or might not all turn out to be a tad awkward but we are hoping for the best; expect a full report back post-event.]

Favorite interview

One of my favorite interviews of the time was Claire Cobbledick, just after Woolworths ditched The Jupiter Drawing Room (Cape Town) — a change driven, she declared, by Woolworth’s then CEO, Ian Moir, who didn’t have a close relationship with the Jupiter team. Showing him a full-frontal male nude as part of the Jupiter portfolio from a Sissy Boy campaign led to an awkward moment, she recalled, and the relationship never really took off post-penis.

I loved working on feature profiles of local agencies and their founders, including King James and FoxP2 (PDF file) among others, for AdVantage magazine (thanks, Louise).

But my freelance career was about to come to a screeching halt as media organisations, especially on the trade-media side, switched from journalism to, uhm, press release-ism. Both my retainers ended within a three-month period. It was either time to move out of journalism or launch a platform actually willing to invest in content.

MarkLives had been ticking along quietly, building an audience without my really noticing it. Could it morph from a blog into an actual business? I drew up a budget in the back of my notebook, printed out a two-page A4 rate card, and drove into Cape Town.

Buy into my vision

The South African advertising trade media had traditionally been funded by media owners. Few agencies had spent money in their media. But my time in print had taught me that media owners were tapped out, and what little they were spending wasn’t going to go to a digital platform (today, of course, there’s virtually nobody around to nudge the “media is in permanent decline” narrative into more-interesting, and possibly truer, territory). It was time that agencies invested the media covering their industry. Would they buy into my vision of an independent, journalism-driven narrative of the SA marketing and advertising industry?

Six meetings and five signed sponsorship contracts later, I drove out of Cape Town and into the world of online publishing proper, press releases and granola be damned.

“We intend to be the home of breaking news, sharp analysis and marketing news you’ll make time for,” I wrote in the June 2012 editorial announcing MarkLives’s move toward becoming a professional news platform. I think, for the most part, we’ve held true to this promise.

Along the way

Along the way, MarkLives has published two digital magazines and a tabloid (all called Mark); launched a careers portal which has served up more than 1700 industry jobs; and founded Ramify, our service connecting 551 agencies and suppliers to marketers [revenue generated by Ramify supports our journalism here on MarkLives. By upgrading your profile to our Premium service, you will contribute to the sustainability of our journalism-driven enterprise].

Five years ago, Simone Puterman joined the team as editor-at-large, whipping all that plain English into shape and playing an indispensable role in ensuring MarkLives looks, reads and feels like the professional product all our readers deserve.

MarkLives itself has served more than 5.6m pages to 2.7m unique browsers over the last decade. We’ve published more than 4600 features and opinion pieces, and another 1200 news stories. We’ve tracked the rise and fall of a number of agencies, the advertising disasters (remember Feed a Child and the interns under a bus saga?), management shakeups, campaign triumphs and account moves.

We’ve established our Agency Leaders’s Most Admired poll as an authoritative measure of industry standing. We’ve celebrated the entrepreneurs and covered how the industry is tackling diversity and transformation.

We’ve not shied away from covering the uncomfortable stories. One industry exec declared us “an enemy of the creative industry”; several promised to hound us out of business within a year of us relaunching as a commercial enterprise.

There was also the phone call from London, asking one of our early sponsors why it would support a site which published an opinion piece critical of Sir Martin Sorrell. We still field emails from execs demanding we change our copy simply because, well, chest-thumping seems to still a thing (we happily publish corrections, and note any changes in copy transparently and in line with best practice, if we actually make a factual error. If not, we politely decline changes post-publication).

Luckily, the vast majority of industry leaders are real, reasonable people open to engagement. They recognise the media as part of their broader constituency, and they’re interested in all sides of the story, even if it turns out to be inconvenient for them.

The most-fulfilling

One of the most-fulfilling aspects of running a media site is that we’ve been able to support entrepreneurs in launching game-changing agencies with the help of the coverage we’ve provided. I’m regularly told that this agency or that “launched on MarkLives”. Equally important to me is that MarkLives has set a high bar in terms of finding and bringing to the industry’s attention a diversity of voices and faces that’s helping change perceptions on what is possible to achieve.

There’s a long list of people to thank for engaging with and supporting MarkLives over the years. They span the industry. They may not always talk to one another but they all talk to us. That’s a good thing, because it allows MarkLives to be a bridge that serves no single party but the larger industry and its many wonderful, colourful and intriguing human beings.
