by Herman Manson (@marklives) Cell C has moved its advertising account from Ogilvy Johannesburg to Draftfcb Group. News of the move broke Friday afternoon (17 January 2014) on social media.
Draftfcb has extensive experience in the telecoms arena, having helped launch Vodacom into the South African market, and remaining its agency for 19 years, until early 2013 when the account moved to Ireland/Davenport.
Sources close to the account move tells MarkLives Draftfcb won the through-the-line business including brand, retail, media and digital, and that it will pull in group agencies including Hellocomputer, Redline and MediaShop to service the account.
Calls to various members of the Ogilvy Johannesburg Marketing and Management team went unanswered on Friday afternoon. Cell C marketing executives refused to comment and its communications department asked for a written request for comment [update: see statement here]. No response has yet been forthcoming. Executives at Draftfcb declined to comment until Cell C has issues a formal release.
Nothing like starting the year with a big win. Welcome to #draftfcb Cell C! http://t.co/5z9FCv7Le8
