Extracts from the ABC Q2 2015 presentation, released today, Thursday, 13 August 2014, show a continued decline in newspaper sales, as well as in magazine circulation.
Among daily newspapers circulation Q2 2015 declined by 4.3% over Q1 2015 and among weeklies Q2 declined by 6.6%, compared to Q1. Weekend papers Q2 circulation declined by 4.6%, compared to Q1, and among local newspapers Q2 was down 5.8% on Q1.
The Herald was the only daily newspaper to show an increase (1%) between Q2 2015 and Q1 2015, while the Sowetan recorded a 5% decline, Daily Sun a 9% decline and Business Day a 5% decline, all in single copy sales, over the same period. Among the weeklies, The Post declined by 4.8%, compared to Q1 2015; Soccer Laduma declined by 6.3%; and Ilanga declined by 12% — all in single copy sales.
In the weekend category, Independent on Saturday increased by 2.3%, and Isoleswe ngeSonto by 0.8% , Q2 on Q1. Sunday Sun declined by 9.7% and Ilanga Langesonto by 9% — all in single copy sales. Sunday Times declined by 6.5%, both in subscriptions and single copy sales.
Total Magazine circulation is down 8.3% Q2 on Q1. All three sectors have declined, compared to Q1: Consumer by 5%, Business-to-Business by 6.7% and Custom by 11%. Sarie is reflecting an increase of 9.6%, mainly in single copy sales.
The Home category saw a circulation increase of 3.9% in Q2 over Q1, with single copy sales increasing but motoring saw a continued circulation decline — clocking up a 9.7% drop in Q2 on Q1. Travel has declined by 14% and Women’s General by 6%. Women’s Health has dropped by 38%, Rooi Rose by 18% and Fair Lady by 19% (Q2 on Q1).
