Extracts from the ABC Q2 2014 presentation released today, Wednesday, 13 August 2014, show a significant decline in weekly and weekend newspaper sales.
The ABC goes so far as to note that even the depressing circulation stats for daily newspapers isn’t a true indication of the severity of the problem facing newspapers. While circulation has dropped 4.7% major newspapers titles still claim ‘growth’ by adding copies in under the “distribution below 50%” of the cover price category. This component is now 5 times larger than PMIE distribution, which, as the ABC notes, is concerning.
In the weekly category circulation figures has dropped by a further 4.1% on Q1 while Afrikaans tiles are generally declining twice as fast over the period.
