by MediaSlut (@MediaSlut) My choice of the best international and local magazine covers in MagLove this week:

  • FORTUNE (India)
  • Hype
  • Popular Science
  • The Economist (Latin-America)
  • Go!
  • Getaway

INTERNATIONAL

FORTUNE (India), October 2014

FORTUNE (India), October 2014A simple, clean and effective way to illustrate its cover story of “The Disruptors”, referring to companies who come into a industry, ‘fists swinging’ and changing the way business is done, looked at, or even how products are valued.

Hype, 19 October 2014

Hype, 19 October 2014I like this playful cover from the free bi-weekly magazine Hype, which is a nightlife- and music guide magazine in the UAE. The way its logo is surrounded by the boardgame number element and its cover story has been illustrated are fun and very effective.

Popular Science, November 2014

Popular Science, November 2014Ahhh… if my next friend could be such a cute little robot, I wouldn’t be completely against the idea… :-)

This cover is definitely going to create debate and start conversations (and get a few eyes rolling…), so if you want to get all the facts, read the full article here.

The Economist (Latin-America), 18 October 2014

The Economist, 18 October 2014As far as I could find out, this isn’t the cover of the main issue but one that ran in a specific country (which one, I’m not sure [in Mexico, according to Zinio — ed-at-large]), but it’s brilliantly sharp and funny.

Keep in mind that fruit hats were made popular by Carmen Miranda, who was a Portuguese Brazilian samba singer and dancer from the 1930s onwards, so it’s synonymous with Brazil. Read the article here.

LOCAL

Go!, November 2014

Go!, November 2014Getaway, November 2014

Getaway, November 2014The December holidays are just around the corner (five weeks, and then we start December!), and I am definitely seeing and feeling things quietening down, and South Africans get excited about the prospect of going away — myself included! That’s probably the reason that I’m drawn towards local travel magazines, and that the November 2014 covers of both Go! and Getaway are making my list this week, too!

They both capture something unique and special about South Africa and showcase holidays that one doesn’t have to travel overseas to experience, and both are beautiful covers in their own right.

MediaSlutMagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
