Pick n Pay Fresh Living, October 2016: 100th issue

Pick n Pay Fresh Living, October 2016: 100th issue

For the past several months, PnP customers have been receiving Fresh Living magazine free when swiping their Smart Shopper cards. This month, the title is celebrating its 100th issue and, with such a beautiful celebratory cover, I’m sure every shopper would want to grab their free copy ASAP (it’s valued at R25, but it should be valued at much more…)!

Happy birthday, Fresh Living! I’ve been a fan since the very first issue, and I wish you much, much more than another 100 issues…

Preview the October 2016 issue here.

New York, 19 September 2016

New York magazine, 19 September 2016

Andrew Sullivan is urging readers to “put down your phone”, as the “endless bombardment of news and gossip and images rendered us manic information addicts” broke him; he’s warning us that the same might happen to us. To convey this very topical issue, New York brilliantly took the “Young Woman Sewing in the Garden” artwork by Mary Cassatt (1880), and photoshopped it to illustrate this issue. The article is a great read, or you can just head over to see what’s been done with some other paintings…

Stern, 29 September 2016

Stern, 29 September 2016

Restrain him! Stern magazine, from Hamburg in Germany, is clearly (also) worried about the potential impact if Trump were to become president of the US. It’s asking the question “What will happen… If Trump is President?” It answers this by warning Germany that his “nuclear weapons, trade wars and megalomania*” is extremely dangerous for the country. Restrain him!

*“Megalomania: Obsession with the exercise of power, especially in the domination of others. The delusion of one’s own power or importance (typically as a symptom of manic or paranoid disorder).” — Oxford Living Dictionaries.

The Guardian Weekend, 24 September 2016

During this week, you might have seen two pictures that went viral: a 20-year-old picture with a dad holding his six-month-old daughter, and then a replicated picture of father and daughter, 20 years later. The shock effect is that the dad is holding a gun aimed at the vicinity of his daughters’ head (finger off the trigger). This was Mike Prindiville, and his daughter Kaitlyn (now 21), and they were photographed by Zed Nelson. “Two decades ago [he] travelled across America for his acclaimed project, Gun Nation. This year, he went back: what’s changed?” It’s a riveting read, and the pictures are haunting. If you’re following the debate regarding “gun control” in the US, ensure you add this article to your reading list…

MediaSlutMagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The anonymous (for now) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
