Esquire (Philippines), May 2016
May 2016 was election month in the Philippines, and the editor decided to move the spotlight away from the candidates, instead dedicating the issue “to the most important — and unelected — part of [the] country: its citizens”. Passersby in a shopping centre were photographed for this purpose, and to “serve as a reminder to Filipinos of the role that they play in nation-building”.
The team also wrote the following, which I think hits close to home:“No matter who the next president may be, the power will remain with the Filipino people — the power to endure, the power to change, the power to build this nation. This is true as long as we remain a free and democratic country, and as long as each Filipino has hope”.

Good Weekend, 28 May 2016
Being a big fine-dining fan myself, the news of the closure of popular Sydney restaurant, Rockpool, came as a shock. Even more shockingly, the chef, Neil Perry, admitted in the article he is “also sick of fine dining — both eating it, and living it”. Gulp! So the Good Weekend (supplement to the Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper) could be on to something here with its cover… is fine dining only a fad that has come and is now going, partly because the pressure is too much? I really hope not.
The Economist, 28 May 2016
Boom!!! The Economist can drop the mic and walk away, knowing it said it all with a simple retouched picture… And, if you want to know more, the full article is available on its website.
The Hollywood Reporter, 10 June 2016
One of the coolest Trump covers I’ve seen, with a lot of pop culture vibe to it, don’t you think? Preview the issue here or, if you just want to read the full (colourful) article with Mr Trump himself, and to read what’s going on in his little head, be warned and click here.
Woolworths TASTE, June 2016
Someone who does accessible fine dining and delicious home cooking particularly well is Woolworths TASTE magazine, and it latest cover is proof of this once again. The playful cover, featuring two, rather opposite, dishes, is just mouth-wateringly delicious and beautiful — and you can already get the recipes, so dinner is sorted for tonight! So, whether Thai red coconut chicken curry or the Chinese sticky hot ribs is more your thing, this cover caters for both tastes.
MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The anonymous (for now) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
