by MediaSlut (@MediaSlut) South Africa is going through a difficult time. Financially, emotionally, politically, agriculturally… Name it, and it’s down. In this week’s post, I wanted to show what we still have to be proud of, happy and excited about — not just because I think these covers are beautiful.

Finweek, 19 May 2016
I find this quite playful, and it talks about building something in a week where politicians have been breaking a lot of things down.
House and Leisure, June 2016
This beaut isn’t on the shelves yet, but House and Leisure gave fans a teaser on Instagram, proving again the über talent we have in both the fashion and design industries, and how they definitely complement each other.
Huisgenoot, 26 May 2016
Last week’s Huisgenoot cover I featured had a special nostalgic feel to it, and this week is 100% celebratory and almost iconic to me. On 20 May 1916, the first issue of Huisgenoot was published, which is today, exactly 100 years ago!!! Very appropriately, Rolene Strauss is the “first cover face of the new century”, and she’s looking stunning in this beautiful styled shoot — which is probably one of the most simplistic and stylish covers of Huisgenoot in recent memory!
To tie in with the celebrations, Karen Zoid has released a brand new song and music video today, written and shot specifically for Huisgenoot’s 100th Birthday.

If, like myself, you also grew up with Huisgenoot, you’ll definitely enjoy its special issue! Buy the digital issue here.
Landbouweekblad, 20 May 2016
Almost every day, South Africans are being slapped in the face with not only existing inflation and food price increases, but also guesstimates of what type of further increases we may expect in the following weeks, months and also years. Scary stuff! That’s why this cover and cover story gives me hope, showing that it’s not all doom and gloom. As South Africans, we always make innovative and creative ways of finding solutions, such as this farm where they are able to grow 1 200 plants in a 1m2 area! I’ll even overlook the bad photoshop job on the left as this news is just too positive…
Plaastoe, May 2016
Sticking with farming, Plaastoe! is a relatively new “farm and lifestyle” magazine that has produced a few noteworthy covers and coverlines. If farming is your thing, I highly recommend you investigate this young title, or buy the digital issues. The studio photoshoot of the cover ‘model’ is also breath of fresh air, adding to the much-cleaner look, compared to other similar titles.
SA Rugby, May 2016
Not many things bring South African together sport does. Although family is probably a close second. Combine these two, and you have a “power family on a power cover”! The latest SA Rugby magazine features an entire family of rugby lovers, rugby fanatics, and rugby players. At the back is dad, Robert du Preez, who himself was a Springbok scrum-half in the early 1990s. With him are his twin sons, Dan and Jean-Luc, and right in front is Robert, their older brother. Definitely a “family affair”!
MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
