by MarkLives (@marklives) Since 2014, MarkLives has commissioned some of South Africa’s best illustrators and graphic designers to design posters celebrating the winners of our annual Agency Leaders’ Most Admired poll awards. Studio Warburton, which designed the 2017 poster set, gives us a quick lowdown on the design process.

The 2017 theme was “high-rollers” — a representation of those agencies and creative individuals that have worked hard to stand out and earn the big bucks with real swag. What better way to represent swag than with a personalised ‘Rolex’ watch design for each winner?

Each poster certificate is customised with the winner’s name, use of colours, patterns and watch hands, giving each winner their ‘time’ to shine.


The process began with some fast-paced brainstorming and sketching. After all concepts were explored, the top four ideas were presented to the MarkLives team and, once a route was chosen, the refining process began.

The design was an iterative process as it moved from sketches to digital illustrations, with the final style being the simple vector style with bright colours and patterns to enable the customisation aspect of the concept.

This aspect was enhanced by the two-colour digital print on Epson enhanced matt paper to give it a crisp and clean finish, with vibrant colours unique to each winner.


Studio Warburton consists of Hylton and Chantelle Warburton, a husband-and-wife team. The design duo focus primarily on illustration, craft design and packaging, having worked with clients that include The Washington Post, Harvard Business Review, Jamie Magazine, Kit-Kat, Wall Street Journal, and Fast Company.
