Compleat Golfer (South Africa), August 2016

Compleat Golfer (South Africa), August 2016

Compleat Golfer was bought by Highbury Safika Media a few months ago (it also publishes SA Rugby and SA Cricket), which gave it a ‘compleat’ makeover on all fronts. Its latest cover with Jaco van Zyl warms my heart as he swings the South African flag in this historic moment in golf: It’s back again as an Olympic sport after 112 years!

Men’s Health (South Africa), August 2016

With the dark background, a touch of gold, and almost exact poses and positions, Team South Africa’s Akani Simbine, Francois Hougaard and Cameron van der Burgh are the golden trio featured on these three limited-edition Men’s Health covers!

SA Rugby, August 2016

SA Rugby, August 2016

We featured this golden SA Rugby cover a few weeks ago but it definitely deserves a spot among our other Olympic-beauties also! It’s the first time ever at the Olympics that Rugby Sevens forms part of the lineup  and our Blitzbokke will be playing their first match on Tuesday 9 August at 11.30am (Brazil local time) against Spain. On Wednesday 10 August at 11.30am they’ll tackle the Australians. The quarter-finals and finals will take place on the 10th and 11th.

Daily Mail Weekend, 30 July 2016

Daily Mail Weekend, 30 July 2016

This past weekend, The Daily Mail’s Weekend supplement featured a very wet Tom Daley, and a few of their readers probably had to drink something wet and cold to cool down a bit… Be still, my beating diving heart! My DStv PVR is definitely set to record the diving segments so make sure you also don’t miss a beat.

India Today, 1 August 2016

India Today, 1 August 2016

Very strong visual imagery to illustrate India daring to dream for the best at the Rio Olympics! In 2012 India ranked 55th out of the 205 countries participating at the London Olympics. Read more about India’s history at the Olympics.

SELF, September 2016

SELF, September 2016

What a Power Woman! The “Strong is Sexy” cover line might not be a direct reference to Serena Williams’ article, but it may just as well be, looking at this cover and the rest of the photo shoot! Great article, shoot and cover overall.

The New York Times Magazine, 31 July 2016

The New York Times Magazine, 31 July 2016

You can’t see the face of 19-year-old swimmer Katie Ledecky but this is definitely a cover to remember! Make sure you view TNYTM’s amazing interactive Olympic Issue website!

The New Yorker, 8 August 2016

The New Yorker, 8 August 2016

“The upcoming Rio Olympics already feature the inevitable cost overruns and crucial infrastructure that may or may not be completed in time, polluted waters for the rowing events, and doping allegations against the Russian Federation. And, yes, to top it all, that mosquito-born virus that is scaring the bejeebers out of spectators and the athletes alike. It feels like a perfect microcosm for the age of anxiety we’re living through.”  — Mark Ulriksens writing in “Something in the Air” for The New Yorker.

VOGUE, August 2016

VOGUE, August 2016

Fashion (model Gigi Hadid) meets sports (Olympic decathlete Ashton Eaton) and seems to hit it off perfectly!

MediaSlutMagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The anonymous (for now) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
