Esquire (Turkey), July 2016
With all the hate in the world (and unrest in Turkey at the moment), we all need some happiness in our lives, and George Clooney and this adorable puppy are definitely doing their bit! If only it were this easy to solve world peace…
British Airways High Life (South Africa), July 2016
When I think about the High Life South Africa covers, layers come to mind, because its covers always display so many. First you look at the picture, and you’re not too sure what’s being featured. But then, after reading each of the cleverly crafted cover lines, you delve in deeper and deeper in solving these gems, and want to read the cover story. This month, the cover lines read:
Just another day at the office
(if you’re a caver)
Explore SA’s most secluded spots — with real agents of the underground
SA Rugby, August 2016
SA Rugby produced an Olympic Special for its August issue, celebrating our Blitzbokke who are heading to Rio to showcase their green and gold, and hopefully bring home Gold in the Rugby Sevens category. Good luck, boys!
An interesting bit of information found on the Rio website: “Although the 15-player version of the sport appeared at the Olympic Games between 1900 and 1924, Rio 2016 marks the debut of rugby sevens, a faster, shorter adaption. Bravery, skill and speed will be in abundance in the men’s and women’s tournaments.” Read more about the Rugby Sevens at the Rio Olympics here.
The New York Times Magazine, 10 July 2016
Can you imagine receiving this sorry-not-sorry letter after you’ve been fighting your innocence after being sent to jail after doing a (failed) drug test? The cover story article, “How a $2 Roadside Drug Test Sends Innocent People to Jail” reads like a horror story! Scary stuff! Loving that it gave The Letter the cover position, as it shouts much louder than any image or infographic would be able to…
Time Out London, 5 July 2016
Also publishing a letter on its cover is Time Out London, but self-drafted to all Londoners in a plea to reflect upon their recent attitude and behaviour after Brexit. It’s a well-composed letter, which should hit home with the right people… The letter ends with “Our city has not changed. It remains a place that cherishes human beings of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. So, people of Europe and people of the world, thank you for making our city your home. No, let’s rephrase that. Thank you for making YOUR city your home.”
Volkskrant Magazine, 9 July 2016
Ah, to have nice lazy summer days again, watching the sun rise and set in one relaxing session… There’s something relaxing and poetic about this cover, with the cover line translated to “Summer Vacation for an Endless Summer”.
MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The anonymous (for now) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
