INTERNATIONAL

Globe Magazine, 15 November 2015

Globe Magazine, 15 November 2015What with my single focus on South African covers last week, I couldn’t include some of these international beauties, but they’re just too good to pass on and not show. With a whole issue about “Top places to work”, Globe Magazine has conceptualised and executed a brilliant concept that fits perfectly! I hate receiving this kind of envelope from HR, but I love seeing it on this cover!

OUT 100, December 2015/January 2016

OUT 100, December 2015/January 2016The annual OUT 100 issue is always beaulah (“beautiful” in Gayle or Gail — a language used by gay men in SA, particularly in the Western Cape, from the 1950s onwards) and, to a big extent, it’s because of the beaulah photography of each of the 100 people who makes a difference in the gay community and their stories.

Taking the honour of “Ally of the Year” goes to “Our President”, Barack Obama, for everything he has done for the LGBTI community of the US. Brilliant coverline: “ALLY. HERO. ICON”.

The New York Times Magazine, 22 November 2015

The New York Times Magazine, 22 November 2015The New York Times Magazine interviewed more than 100 women within the film and television industry, who say they have “found themselves systematically and routinely shut out from opportunities — be it to act, direct, produce, write, create or just show up”, compared to their male counterparts. Collectively, with all these strong voices and personalities, this makes for an explosive issue with great quotes, beautiful profile photography and a thought-provoking in-depth article.

SOUTH AFRICAN

The Big Issue (South Africa), Collector’s Issue 2015

The Big Issue (South Africa), Collector’s Issue 2015Some great names are attached to this special Collector’s Edition of The Big Issue! They include SA’s top writers, poets, artists, photographers and even some chefs, who all tell us “why they love SA”. Read more about this issue, and some of the quotes from these SA personalities, right here. And next time you’re at the traffic light and spot this beauty, remember it’s only R30, with R15 going directly to the person you’re buying it from… Share the love!

Intiem, December 2015/January 2016

Intiem, December/January 2016Sjoe, Bobby and Annatjie are really heating things up on the cover of this Christian relationship title, going all nêkêd…! Intiem educates Christian couples on how they may spice things up in the relationship, while keeping it as PG as it can go. Looking back at its previous covers, this one is — by far — not only the most striking and risky but also the most beautiful and edgy!

MediaSlutMagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
