INTERNATIONAL
Bloomberg Businessweek (Middle East), 15 November 2015
I had a good old giggle when I read the story behind this brilliant cover on CoverJunkie. As Steven Gastelluccia explains to CoverJunkie, “The aviation story is about the Big Three Gulf carriers and the conflict they are facing from the American Airlines about subsidies. We used the ‘FRIENDS’ theme due to the fact that Jennifer Aniston was a big name used by Emirates airlines in a recent advert which pokes fun at the comparable standards of their onboard services.” Brilliant, right?!
Here’s the Jennifer Aniston Emirates advert:
M (France)
It’s one of those covers that plays with my brain, as it’s telling me her eyes are closed, yet open, at the same time. A striking image with clever makeup that draws you in and keeps your attention.
Flick through this issue here, but unfortunately there’s a paywall if you want to zoom in and read something.
Volkskrant Magazine, 31 October 2015
Cheese! A very funny (and relevant) image chosen from illustrator, Paul Faassen, for the cover of this issue! There’s no specific link to the image, what’s illustrated and the story, but rather it’s celebration of a booklet by Faassen that is being launched and the story about that. He regularly features in Volkskrant, thus it’s very relevant to readers. I just love it, and want it framed!
SOUTH AFRICA
Food & Home Entertaining, December 2015
Give me this decontructed Christmas dessert any day, instead pf the normal trifle we’re force-fed, come Christmas day… It doesn’t look only festive (very important…), but also über-delicious (even more important)!
Sawubona (SAA), November 2015
This Brazilian woman attracted my attention with her striking face paint and beautiful highlighted features. It’s very bold, and I’ll give it a Gold ;-)
Download the free issue from MySubs if you’re not going to be flying SAA in November.
STUFF (South Africa), November 2015
It’s not a cover unique to our South African version (it’s syndicated to a few) but, either way, it’s just as amazing as the “200 most amazing things in the world today” it’s celebrating and promoting.

MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
