  • Time Out (New York)
  • The Media

INTERNATIONAL

Boat, Issue 10

Boat, Issue 10With each issue, Boat zooms in on a new and inspiring city, and this time around it’s Tel Aviv! It’s always been on the cards as a destination for me, and this cover and the spreads make me want to go even more now. The cover is dark yet at the same time bright with these beautiful ladies on them. I love that it’s not spoilt with tons of cover lines; they’re discreetly placed on top. Preview this issue here.

Galileu (Brazil), November 2015

Galileu, November 2015Wowzers! The concept, styling and photography are excellently executed to help convey the cover story, “Gender: Everything you know is wrong”. Just wow…

Eurostar’s Metropolitan, October 2015

Metropolitan, October 2015When driving through the train tunnels while on the Eurostar, readers might get a pleasant surprise with the cover lighting up! Yip, the whole cover is printed with Glow in the Dark ink! Brilliant! Read the full issue, and more about this unique feature, here.

Time Out (New York), 28 October 2015

Time Out New York, 28 October 2015These types of cover lines never get mouldy old with me, especially not when executed so deliciously. If you’re perhaps heading to New York in the near future, start making a list of the “100 best dishes in the city” you want to visit by going here.

SOUTH AFRICAN

The Media, October 2015

The Media, October 2015It took me some time to understand how the cover linked into the issue, first thinking that “What’s up with OOH in Africa” referred to the sexual “ooh” sound. Then I saw “There’s a fine line between playtime and playtime” (with the little Lovers Plus Condoms image), which is actually an award-winning outdoor advertising campaign by Joe Public. Then it all started falling into place… OOH stands for “out-of-home” advertising. I’d like to think that the “OOH” here is a double entendre.

I’ve also included a close-up of the image for your viewing delight.

MediaSlutMagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
