MediaSlut (@MediaSlut)’s choice of the best international and South African magazine covers this week:

  • Esquire (US)
  • Fortune (India)
  • The Economist
  • The New York Times Magazine
  • Playboy Premium (South Africa)

INTERNATIONAL

Esquire (US), October 2015 (Special Collector’s Edition)

Esquire (US), October 2015A thousand issues. Think about that quickly… 1 000! A moerse congrats to the teams over the years and the publishers on this massive milestone! To celebrate, they have this special Collector’s Edition, which is shown best in all its golden-glory on CoverJunkie.

FORTUNE (India), September 2015

Fortune (India), September 2015Scotland = whisky, and the design team took the cover line “fights back” (in reference to how the Scottish “whisky industry is reinventing itself to stay relevant”) literally, and created this cool graphic which gets the message across perfectly.

The Economist, 5 September 2015

The Economist, 5 September 2015When I first saw the cover as small thumbnail I couldn’t grasp it at all, as I couldn’t make out what this flying object thingy over the White House is… however, at a closer look, it’s hysterical! The photoshop is a bit ‘meh’, but I have the feeling it’s supposed to look like a mini-GIF. Read the full article here.

The New York Times Magazine, 6 September 2015

The New York Times, 6 September 2015What with all the migrants and refugee news recently, especially after the photo three-year-old Aylan Kurdi’s lifeless little body went viral, this cover certainly grabbed my attention. At first I thought it might be a stock image on the cover, but I was very, very wrong… Massive respect to photographer Paolo Pellegrin and writer Scott Anderson who, by getting up close and personal, was able to give us a look into these horrible situations.

While reading the creative and visually striking online article, I was left speechless by the stunning photography and and eerie videos that accompanied it. I can’t even imagine going through something like this, but The New York Times Magazine has given me a glimpse into the lives of thousands of people who have no other option.

SOUTH AFRICAN

Playboy Premium, September/October 2015

Playboy Premium, September/October 2015Soft lighting, simple, nice lines (and legs) and a slick cover overall. Just a pity the ball was dropped regarding the typography… Although sexy, it’s hard to read.

  1. The typography on the Playboy cover is awful…what does the main coverline even say? That completely ruins it, and makes your choice very odd. But the most surprising thing is that Playboy still publishes in SA. Who even knew?
