MediaSlut (@MediaSlut)’s choice of the best international and South African magazine covers this week:
- WIRED (Italy)
- New Scientist (Netherlands)
- New York
- Classic Go!
- Woolworths TASTE
INTERNATIONAL
WIRED (Italy), June 2015
Reed Hastings is the co-founder and CEO of Netflix, and the guy who might be the reason that we might be singing “Netflix killed the TV star”, to the tune of “Video killed the radio star”…
New Scientist (Netherlands)
A striking wraparound cover illustrating its cover story that plastic is the “assassinator polluting earth”. True. Very true.
New York, 8 June 2015
Aaaaaah-mazingly smart way of illustrating the cover lines in a very relevant way!
SOUTH AFRICAN
Classic Go!, Volume 1
Go! and Weg! have both launched new brand extensions, “Classic Go!” and “Klassieke Weg!”, to celebrate their “collection of best travel stories” over the past 100 issues.
These seems to be digital publications only, and you may preview, and buy, the issue right here. They include writing from the popular Erns Grundling, Sophia van Taak and Barnie Louw.
Woolworths TASTE, June 2015
Woolworths TASTE magazine took a leap of faith this issue by venturing away from (beautiful and delicious-looking) food on the cover to using its other biggest selling point: the lovely and very talented women who actually create and prepare all the food and recipes!
Abigail Donnelly, Hannah Lewry, Siba Mtongana and Phillippa Cheifitz are the #foodiefoursome who have become synonymous with this magazine.

MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
