MediaSlut (@MediaSlut)’s choice of the best international magazine covers this week:

  • Adbusters
  • Cuisine
  • Foodism
  • Islands
  • Zeit Magazin

INTERNATIONAL

Adbusters (various)

Adbusters, Jan/Feb 2015Adbusters, March/April 2015Adbusters, May/June 2015Adbusters, July/August 2015
I’m including Adbusters on this list as it doesn’t take itself too seriously on its covers. To illustrate this, I’ve included all the issues published in 2015 so far.

I didn’t know this but, according to its website, it’s a “not-for-profit organisation” and its magazine “is entirely ad-free”! Ah, now Adbusters makes sense ;-). View all the issues here.

Cuisine, July 2015

Cuisine, July 2015New Zealand’s Cuisine magazine is cooking up “new-look packaging”, and illustrating this brilliantly with its latest cover concept!

Foodism

FoodismThis is, of course, not possible without Photoshop, but the end product is just so hot and sexy!

Foodism is almost like our local Eat Out, but it publishes 110 000 copies which are then distributed free of charge in London.

Islands

IslandsSuch a great sales cover for the rich and famous who can afford island holidays like these! I mean, after seeing this image and the little teasers, who wouldn’t want to be there, there and also THERE?!

Zeit Magazin, 25 June 2015

Zeit Magazin, 25 June 2015Zeitgeist Magazine, 25 June 2015 secondary cover
I didn’t know this until I read about it on CoverJunkie, but recently all the Zeit Magazinissues have two ‘covers’ — the one on the outside front cover (of course) and then also on page three, which “creates an excellent opportunity to give more depth to their cover stories”. With this in mind, the latest one is actually even more cool!

The first cover (with the generic bird and egg) reads: “My father wanted to never have anything to do with me”. And then on the second cover (with what now appears to be the Twitter bird…) reads “Then he suddently started following me on Twitter — A daughter tells the story of her life”.

Definitely going to keep my eye on these double covers!

MediaSlutMagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
