INTERNATIONAL
Interview (Germany), December/January 2015
Beyoncé fans will immediately *snap* the reference to the latest Interview cover — which is stunning — a reference to one of her outfits she wears on her latest “On the Run” tour with Jay Z.
The New Yorker (various)
If you’ve been keeping track of the unrest and protests happening in Ferguson in Missouri, you’ll agree with me that its 8 December 2014 cover perfectly captures the divide happening after the death of Michael Brown… Read more about this brilliant cover and the story behind it.
The second New Yorker cover I’ve included, is also very creative, showing different scenes from different eras (past and future), rolling out of a picture that depicts the present…
Parool, PS Section
I love shock-value! But I must say that even this cover of PS (a section of Netherlands newspaper, Parool) has taken shock-value to a whole new depth…! The cover story looks at “what goes in and out of jails”…
Stylist (France), 20 November 2014
This cover immediately reminded me of my dad’s collection of hundreds of old little books, where the story was told in pictures and speech bubbles, such as Ruiter in Swart, Die Wit Tier and Die Swart Luiperd — even down to the detail of the old, torn spine and damaged edges…
This French issue of Stylist looks at which of today’s “cult fiction” items (iPads, iPhones etc) will stand the test of time… A great cover execution!
Time Out London, 26 November 2014
I’m seeing more and more of these covers, where elements either play with the reader’s eyes or brain and pull the reader in. When it’s just a gimmick, it doesn’t always work — but when it fits in perfectly into the editorial and the overall issue, it’s brilliant!

MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
