MarkLives.com runs a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week. We recognise well thought out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three in one) magazine covers and celebrate the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. INTERNATIONAL
Lucky Peach, Issue 8, 2013
How do you marry food with a ‘gender issue’? Well, you create two different covers, and each cover has objects on it that SCREAMS male and female anatomy. Easy as that! Lucky Peach is a quarterly ‘journal of food and writing’… just in case you were wondering “WTF,” get a better understanding of their humour by viewing past covers here.
OBVIOUS, September 2013
OBVIOUS is an online magazine in celebrating of it’s 5th anniversary. For the special occasion they’ve produced 8 covers for their fashion issue, and most of them are pretty awesome…! It seems like it’s a massive trend in 2013 to not only create 3 split-covers anymore (which was the norm previously), but to try and create as many as possible… Esquire UK published 5 covers for their HEROES issue, and Interview US created 7 covers with their September 2013 “Model Issue”, and now OBVIOUS with 8 covers… I wonder how far publishers will take it, and what the maximum amount of covers will be…?
American University Magazine, August 2013
I just thought that this is such a simple and creative way to illustrate “Around the World in 420 Days”… Maybe this will inspire something else for someone else. You can read the full magazine here.
LOCAL
SA Cricket, September / October 2013
The Cyan Blue background jumps rights at you, and the ‘in motion’ effect used with Jacques Kallis is also very cool, and something new that I haven’t seen used before on a South African sports title. I think it’s a knock-out cover…
Huisgenoot, 5 September 2013
Huisgenoot are publishing impactful covers more often these days. Good on them/ The previous cover I really loved, was their 21 March 2013 cover with the wedding picture of Karlien van Jaarsveld and Derick Hougaard. And now this cover with sports personality Graeme Smith, with his two adorable children. I mean, who’s heart wouldn’t melt when seeing this cover? Surely that must mean it’s a good cover, and a cover that will equate into copy sales…?
