I’ll be honest — when I looked at the calendar for September, I had slight heart-attack at the busy schedule that started filling up my diary for these next two weeks. This week sees the start of Creative Week, culminating in the 2013 Loerie Awards. Just after that, it’s the FNB Joburg Art Fair and Str.Crd at the same time, not to mention the Hello Ambassador conference in Pretoria. Follow our ongoing coverage through our Facebook or Twitter accounts.

We’ve dedicated the column this week to The Loerie Awards — we’ve had a look at some past retrospective work, but also some interesting up-and-coming talent. Check it out.

Ever wondered what it took to win a Loerie in the decades past? We did, so we decided to take a look back — way back — into the Loeries archives to see if we could dig up some of the old winning work.

Loeries Retrospective: The 1980s

1980s
Although technically the Loeries began in the late 1970s, trying to find work from that time turned out to be nearly impossible. So, instead, we’ll start with the next best thing — the 1980s. Volkswagen seemed to clean up during the ’80s with its iconic TV ads, but who can forget the classic Mercedez Benz ad on Chapman’s Peak?

Loeries Retrospective: The 1990s

1990s
While Santam and Nando’s might have been fighting it out recently, South Africa has a history of funny reply ads — it was in the 1990s that BMW replied to the Chapman’s Peak Mercedes Benz ad with its Beats the Bendz TV commercial. This was also the decade that brought us David Kramer and his Volksiebus, and the internationally acclaimed Sasol Glug Glug.

Loeries Retrospective: The 2000s

2000s
 The 2000s aren’t even that far behind us in 2013, but it’s still possible to see the vast change in quality from then. A personal favourite of mine is the Fiat Palio Cyclist and the Vodacom Dictator. This is also the decade that ended in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, with some great ads around that time.
