MarkLives.com runs a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week. We recognise well thought out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three in one) magazine covers and celebrate the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. By media blogger MediaSlut.

INTERNATIONAL

GUP (Netherlands), #37

GUP Netherlands

Every single news outlet (website, radio, news, newspapers, EVERYONE) is covering the news that “Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie has undergone a double mastectomy to reduce her chances of getting breast cancer” (you can read the full story here). Everyone is giving their input. Everyone is telling their own story. Everyone is saying something about it. Just perfect timing for GUP (Guide to Unique Photography, out next week).

Complex, June 2013

Complex

The hottest Solange Knowles cover that ‘rises’ to mind, is actually her November 2012 ELLE South Africa cover. But this one is right up there, and is just as bold. Just like Solange. The use and cropping of the image against the blue background, with the orange/red lips, black hair, and the (strange) angle of her face  all works, as Solange is probably looking ‘up’ at her ‘rising star’. (I know, corny, but I just had to).

The New Republic, 27 May 2013

New Republic

Well. It’s official. Being lonely can lead you to your grave .  You can read the complete article here, to prevent this from happening to you…

LOCAL

GQ Style (South Africa), Volume 3, Autumn / Winter 2013

GQ Style 1 2013

While Samuel L. Jackson was in Johannesburg filming the movie Kite, the GQ-guys grabbed the opportunity to get him to be their cover model. Dressed in SA Fashion! And it’s S#!t hot!

De Kat, May / June 2013

De Kat 1 May June 2013

Who’s that behind the blind-fold? It’s Miss South Africa Marilyn Ramos! This is one of the best De Kat covers that I’ve seen in a while, because of the use of colours, and the simple but very effective use of graphics (water and fire), great photography, and just the complete final product that could easily be framed and sold…
