Digg the sustainable placemats

The House and Leisure Green Designers at Woolworths competition was launched in August 2008, with the aim of showcasing home product design from students at tertiary design institutions around the country. Students were briefed to design environmentally friendly homeware in a specific category that is suitable for a discerning consumer. The competition ran in the past seven issues, with designs from three semi-finalists showcased each month. The work of some of the students featured will be chosen to go into production, and will be available at selected Woolworths stores.

The 10 finalists in the House and Leisure Green Designers at Woolworths competition (Product category in brackets) will be featured on MarkLives!com throughout the week. First up is Kirsti van Zyl and Nivesh Rawatlal. The winner will be announced at Design Indaba on 26 February.

Kirsti van Zyl, Cape Peninsula University of Technology (bed linen)

It is exciting to be part of the increasing awareness that surrounds environmental issues. The root imagery in my design is a representation of both my own and society’s growing involvement.

Nivesh Rawatlal, Durban Institute of Technology (place mats)

My design is sustainable as it’s durable and nontoxic. My place mats would be cost effective to produce. The material I chose was canvas, as it’s great to work with. I got my inspiration from looking around me … in my studio, wherever I walked. It was a combination of many things that had been building up in my headspace.
