MyKitchen, Issue 24
Wowser! I’m not only referring to the burger but to the overall deliciousness of the cover… The Foschini Group’s MyKitchen has done a great job with this issue, and it can definitely stand proud next to any other international food magazine!
Plascon Spaces, Spring 2016
Plascon launched its annual Plascon Colour Forecast for 2017 recently, and this inspirational product is free with the Spring issue of Plascon Spaces. The new issue’s cover is inspired by the Prism section, and it’s absolutely stunning, colourful and unique. Take time to look at all the little patterns and colours picking up everywhere on this cover… I’m sure this will inspire people!
But here’s the good news: The inspiration doesn’t stop there! I’ve just realised that all the back issues of Plascon Spaces magazine, from Issue 10 onwards, have all been uploaded to its website for free reading! For colour-lovers, this is a great treat! Just click here and then on “Read Online”.
PM, September 2016
Such a simple, yet extremely effective, illustration on the online version of PM Magazine, which gives “insight and inspiration for professional marketers”.
The New York Times Magazine, 18 September 2016
I know, I know… I featured The New York Times Magazine last week but, if the cover’s good, it’s good, and it needs to be shown. The “Yo Voté” on the stickers mean “I Voted”, and the extra copy on the cover reads “27 Million and Counting — How Republicans lost the Latino vote. Why Democrats can’t take it for granted.”

Time Out New York, 7 September 2016
Time Out New York said something about its new issue that’s made me think: “In today’s New York, queer is everywhere. Members of the LGBT community are creating some of the most exciting parts of our culture, which is why we wanted to stop and take a look at what their experience in the city is like right now.”
The same may easily be said about Cape Town, and almost all cities… People from the LGBT community have some of the most influence in our societies, without your even being aware of their sexuality, and it has to be recognised and respected. In a way it made me proud of living in South Africa, where we, as LGBT people, have more rights than certain other countries. I mean, in Australia, they want to introduce a plebiscite where the country can have a vote “that would allow all adult Australians to vote on whether same-sex marriage should be legalized”… Both sides of the ‘debate’ will be given R80 000 000 each, “to publicize their perspectives”. R160 000 000 in tax money to waste on something that should be an automatic human right. I’ll leave it at that.
To celebrate this extremely important ‘community’ in New York, Time Out dedicated the entire issue to LGBT community members, featuring them on the cover, and showing its picks of “the year’s best queer events, spots and more”. Read more about the issue, and view the slideshow of the 53 polaroids featured on the cover, here.
MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The anonymous (for now) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
