mediaslutzaMarkLives.com runs a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week. We recognise well thought out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three in one) magazine covers and celebrate the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. INTERNATIONAL

New York, 16 September 2013

New York

This cover with “the billionaire mayor of New York”, Michael Bloomberg, is just so intriguing! The interesting crop of the photo just below his eyes. The pose. The Black & White image. The placement of the logo. The cover line usage. It’s bold, and it’s a winner!

Fucking Young!, Autumn/Winter, 2013-2014

Fucking Young

How do you like your magazines? Fucking Young!, apparently… It’s the bold title of this magazines that is now only in it’s 3rd issue, but I think it’s a great title that will stick in the minds of readers, fans and people just walking past the magazine shelf… And the covers are bold and beautiful as well!

Martha Stewart Living, September 2013

Living

I never thought I’d be featuring a Martha Steward Living magazine cover as one of my favourites, but there was just something about the colours and overall simplicity of the cover (and organized fashion) that reminded me of the Real Simple SA covers (damn, I miss that magazine). It definitely only works for a certain market (the anal retentive one? – ed), but I think it’s a beautiful cover for them.

LOCAL

Ideas, October 2013

Ideas 10 October 2013 ENG

Ideas / Idees magazine has done it again! You might remember that striking February 2012 cover we featured because of the creative use of their logo. This time around, it’s the great use of flowers on every element of their beautiful cover.

Prufrock, #2, 2013

Prufrock Prufrock 1

I bumped into an ex-colleague after they’ve just attended the Open Book Festival in Cape Town. I was pretty impressed when they pulled out the first two issues of the new literary magazine Prufrock – “A Magazine Of Writing.” What a stunning 1st and 2nd cover! I knew immediately that I just had to share this new title, so that it can get the support it requires! (And not die a slow death like many literary magazines before it…)
