MarkLives.com runs a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week. We recognise well thought out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three in one) magazine covers and celebrate the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. INTERNATIONAL

CURRENT (San Antonia), 16 January 2013

CURRENT

It is indeed our fault. But CURRENT magazine from San Antonia got it right by conveying the whole message in just this smart picture. If you also didn’t know, the cracks depict Texas…

New York, 28 January 2013

New York

The latest issue of New York is investigating why “High School is a sadistic Institution”. I’m sure that hundreds of thousands of people will relate to this article, but also to the cover. To read the complete (great) article, you can click here.

Rolling Stone (US), 31 January 2013

Rolling Stone

The 30 Rock team, especially Tina Fey, really are the superhero’s of Comedy, so it’s a very fitting and collectors item cover (for 30 Rock fans) to commemorate “The last few days of 30 Rock”.

LOCAL

Ideas / Idees, February 2013

Ideas 2 February 2013 ENG

What immediately grabbed me with this cover, is the creative masthead/logo, and how they just had a bit of FUN for a change. The whole cover shoot is also very fitting to a DIY/Crafts magazine like this title. I would just suggest to the team that they also make the website logo the same logo as the magazine for the month that it’s on shelf. It’s really something unique (for a South African title), and worth boasting about. Cudo’s to the team for taking a risk.

– The (for now anonymous) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa. Magazines in particular. His mission is to show when South African magazines might fail, but most importantly, succeed. If you’re looking for a library about South African magazines and news, your one-stop pitstop is MediaSlut. #MagazinesForTheWin
