National Geographic (Turkey), October 2016
The Turkish issue of National Geographic is featuring Cuba (loving the Turkish spelling “Küba!”), and its amazing cover image captures the essence of the country perfectly! The story itself celebrates the restart of commercial travel between the US and Cuba after five decades of hostility, brought on by the Cold War.
New York, 3 October 2016
There’s just something magical about black and white photography/covers, especially when accompanied with gold. New York magazine is running an article written by the outgoing president himself, Barack Obama, as well as an “Eight years in America” feature.
The eight-year timeline looks at unemployment, GDP and troops in Afghanistan/Iraq at the beginning of each year (starting at 2009), as well as big stories relating to Obama plus other important news that happened during the years (from pop culture to sport), with articles relating to each. As this article links to many, many other articles, it may easily take you the whole day if you plan on reading everything. It’s definitely worth a quick squiz and read, though.
Sawubona, October 2016
While it’s not the best-quality image, the image itself is stunningly striking and idyllic, and really draws me in!
Taalgenoot, Spring 2016
Multitalented Nicola Hanekom —one of my favourite actresses — is flying the South African flag very high on the latest cover of Taalgenoot, and is looking fantastic doing so! This is also the first cover, and issue, of the new editor, Johan Jack Smith. I’m looking forward to see what he’s going to be producing and publishing in the following issues.
Time Out London (Art Issue), 4 October 2016
A cheeky cover promoting Time Out London’s Art Issue. I love the simplicity, the use of only three colours, and that everything on the cover is handwritten/drawn!
MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The anonymous (for now) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
