Playboy (US), July/August 2016
With Playboy not publishing full-on nude covers anymore, it has had to find different ways of teasing the reader. How clever to print the “The Freedom Issue” on the actual underwear! Definitely tasteful enough (by Playboy standards) not to have too many conservatives get their panties in a bunch…
Sowetan S Mag, 24 June 2016
By looking at historical information, when a newspaper wants to cut costs, it first starts by looking at marketing and supplements, and cuts those. But, for the Sowetan newspaper, its brand-new quarterly lifestyle magazine definitely looks like an investment, and something it’s proud of sharing with its 1.6m readers (inserted only into the Sowetan’s coastal and Gauteng editions)! This newbie — a lifestyle and fashion magazine —looks sexy at first glance, with a very strong S to shout the name: S Mag.
Taalgenoot, Winter 2016
Naked. Raw. Real. The Winter issue of Taalgenoot is editor Donnay Torr’s last issue, and she explains in her last ed’s letter the privilege of being able to capture actors and couple, Tinarie van Wyk-Loots and Erik Holm, for this issue and cover. Her letter reads:
I absolutely admire Holm as an actor, as he is wheelchair-bound but doesn’t let that stand in his way of being one of the best stage and soapie actors, and together they make a mean team!

Time Out New York, 22 June 2016
A colourful star, symbolising the LGBT colours, for every life lost in the Orlando shooting… Simple. Beautiful.
Woolworths TASTE, July 2016
We’ve become so accustomed to food magazine covers being styled to death, almost turning into a still life. So it’s a breath of fresh air when we see some movement on a cover, like we’re seeing here on the latest edition of TASTE — it adds another layer of sensation! Want to make the Pavlova on the cover? Here you go…
MagLove by @MediaSlut is a regular slot featuring the best local and international magazine covers every week, recognising well thought-out, powerful and interesting (and hopefully all three-in-one) covers and celebrating the mix of pragmatism, creativity and personal taste that created each of them. The anonymous (for now) blogger behind MediaSlut knows way too much for his own good about media in South Africa, magazines in particular. His mission is to show when SA magazines fail but, most importantly, also when they succeed. If you’re looking for a library about SA magazines and news, this is your one-stop pitstop.
